Job Description

Will you join us on a journey to disrupt the trillion dollar travel industry? We are looking for the best and brightest who share our passion for travellers, data, and product.

FindHotel believes travel is the one thing that really opens minds to new ideas, cultures, and ways of thinking. Our mission is to get every traveller in the world the best accommodation deal. From adventure travel and backpacking to honeymoons and family vacations, we deeply care so that every traveller can make the best informed accommodation choice at the absolute best conditions for every trip.

We are growing fast and looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join us in becoming a global travel category leader.

We build highly performant, scalable services and components that power our product and provide our users with the best content and deals the accommodation industry has to offer. Scalability, reliability, and great performances are the core of what we build. We work with modern stacks (Go, Elixir, Node.js, Python) and, as we embrace the DevOps culture, our infrastructure-as-code in the cloud (AWS) is managed via tools like Docker, Jenkins, and Terraform.

Should you join us, not only you will get exposed to some bright engineers with a passion for delivering great software, you will also get the chance to collaborate with team members from a broader range of disciplines, including data analysts and scientists, product owners, UX experts, and marketing specialists.

What you will actually be doing / responsibilities

Work in a team to solve challenging problems, integrating accommodation providers and building blazing-fast services that serve their data Identify bottlenecks and opportunities for improvements in terms of performance and code quality Help improving our infrastructure and scale it to support our continuous growth in a cost-effective way Support the growth of junior and intermediate engineers by coaching them in their daily tasks, as well as raising the bar of how things are done within both your team and the bigger engineering group What a day in the office might look like

In the morning, you and your fellow engineers sit down with the Product Owner to discuss the performance of a not-so-fast API endpoint. Comparing the ideal performance to the data collected by our monitoring systems, you brainstorm together a few ideas of how to improve the service's performance and design a scalable solution. After lunch, you jump onto an open issue and prepare a pull request that improves the infrastructure's reliability for one of the most delicate components. Before the end of the day, you put together some ideas on how to improve another component's design and organize an architecture review session with some engineers across teams to discuss the benefits and costs of your proposed solution.

Requirements Who we are looking for / requirements

Job Description

Pusher’s realtime APIs power applications around the world across various industries. When you see an in-app chat, a collaborative text editor, or anything else that updates instantly—it could be us shifting events behind the scenes. This role is specifically for the Chatkit team, where we are aspiring to be the industry leader of all chat SaaS by empowering developers to add chat functionality in a fraction of the development time.

As a Chatkit Engineer you will:

  • Massively scale up the core of Chatkit services
  • Influence a long-term technical roadmap for the product
  • Mentor the team to help make Chatkit the industry-leading chat API

What you will be able to learn

Great software engineers never stop learning, so we want to provide you opportunities for improving your knowledge. As a Chatkit Engineer:

  • You will get to learn and use leading-edge technologies, like Kubernetes, in high-traffic production environments
  • You will have a chance to learn from many experienced engineers with various technical backgrounds
  • You will help take Pusher’s flagship new product through a period of significant growth, encountering many engineering challenges along the way

What you will typically do

  • You will become the go-to expert for at least one large area of the codebase
  • You will need to be able to work comfortably solving ambiguous and complex problems
  • You will need to dive into both new and familiar areas of our code to support more inexperienced members of your team, and communicate effectively whether it be pair-programming, in a code review, or in a proposal for a new improvement or service
  • You will be a member of the on-call rotation, and be expected to follow through with suggestions for how to prevent future system outages, or implement self-healing systems

In these early stages of the product lifecycle, we get firsthand insight into the challenges, complaints, and excitement of our customers through a customer support rotation

What working in the Chatkit team looks like

  • The Chatkit team uses a modern tech stack. Our services are written in Go and deployed on Kubernetes. Pusher uses and supports many other projects from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.
  • The Chatkit team subscribes to the lean methodology. We work in short iterations with as little bureaucracy as possible. We value continuous improvement and expect team members to voice their concerns early and often so that we may address things before they become problems.
  • The Chatkit team breaks down silos through collaborating, information sharing, and pairing. We rotate ownership of interesting problems like benchmarking, and encourage pairing on new proposals and SDKs.

What Pusher is like

We strongly believe in the importance of diversity and inclusion. They not only provide a better working environment but also improve the quality of our services. We welcome people of different nationalities, backgrounds, experiences, abilities and perspectives.

We are here to help our customers build delightful applications. By solving significant engineering challenges and packaging them into easy to use APIs, we let developers focus on making their users happy.

We put emphasis on collaboration between people and teams. Everyone is on the same mission, so sharing work helps us reach our goals faster. Throwing problems over the wall and pointing fingers at each other is not our style.

We strive for transparency. Keeping everyone well-informed is crucial for building trust, efficiency and satisfaction at work.

Job Description

We're building a unified developer experience to help software teams move faster and stay focused on achieving their goals. Over the past decades, software development has grown in importance inside organizations and with it there has been a Cambrian explosion of tooling. While each tool is great at what it does, they live in their own silos and weren’t built to work together. These silos lead to disconnected workflows, context switching, and difficulty finding information. Our vision is to build a better way to get work done. Summon brings together your tools and data into one blazingly fast, native experience. We’re just getting started and our ambition is bold: build the best platform for software teams to get their work done. We love what we do and are motivated by working on a product we love using ourselves. You would have an immediate impact as a builder to influence engineering and the direction of the product. You join as a founding engineer and have full ownership working closely with our founders and a team of super talented developers.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for a full-time backend engineer. Our ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience building event driven microservices or service oriented architectures and has built most facets, if not all, in a "twelve-factor" app. Preference is for real experience (2+ years) in our primary language of Golang, but other languages are considered when able to quickly pick up new technologies. Additional experience in integrating with 3rd party systems, event-driven architecture, databases, and cloud services (AWS, GCP, etc) are important.

You will directly influence how and what to build, and must be comfortable collaborating on the architecture, code, product, etc as we have a strong culture of devops as well as being technically curious, thoughtful and purposeful in what we build. We value deploying frequently with well-written, maintainable, instrumented and tested code to a kubernetes cluster.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop new products and features in a small team
  • Collaboration with the team to solve technical problems and help shape the product direction
  • Provide technical input and knowledge to the planning, design, and requirements process for new products and features
  • Review other software engineers' code for correctness, style, and completeness
  • Support your team's production software by responding to an occasional alert or bug report
  • Write integration tests and work with our product team to ensure the operation and correctness of new features

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of backend engineering in a distributed systems
  • 2+ years in Golang or 5+ using several languages you were able to quickly pick up
  • Strong knowledge of a variety of database systems (Graph, relational etc.)
  • Experience working with 3rd party APIs and OAuth
  • Comfortable with strong dev ops culture
  • Strong communication skills in English and experience working as part of a remote team
  • Need to be located in timezones UTC-4 through UTC-8 (The Americas)
  • Excited to travel internationally for company retreats (twice a year)
  • Favorite Ted Lasso quote

Why join us?

We love what we do: designing and building great products. But our work isn't the only thing that defines us. We're not trying to create some semi-cult to get people to work here. We simply enjoy working together and building useful and beautiful software for our customers. We’re a venture-backed startup and are looking for someone who is excited about the early stages of building a product and having a tangible impact on the company’s success. You would join a group of repeat founders. We have founded startups backed by top Silicon Valley VCs. While getting huge amounts of venture capital has its advantages, it also puts a company on a very narrow success path. We want to do it a little differently this time. Where raising money and growth is balanced with the goal of being default-alive and capital-efficient. Which gives us optionality and lets us build the company we want to build over the long run.

  • You are comfortable using GCC, and find yourself at home going through a C codebase.
  • Familiarity with RPC and common methods of IPC such as sockets and named pipes.
  • Video encoding experience. You have worked with VP8 and understand the spec.
  • Building cross-platform libraries, our Go agent compiles to Windows, Darwin, and Linux on a variety of architectures.

Things you might work on

  • Building a cross-platform patch management system to give users control over OS updates.
  • Working with VP8 to reduce the latency and bandwidth when streaming a device.
  • Creating a system tray GUI for the agent.
  • Expanding desktop streaming to work on Mac and Linux.
  • Adding a proxy to the agent to enable remote access to routers and switches.
  • Implementing Trickle ICE to improve WebRTC connection times.

Why you might want to work with us

  • We are a small, fully remote engineering team, and there are no layers of bureaucracy. You can have a huge impact here.
  • We are very flexible with working hours, we don't expect you to work a consistent block of time, we trust you to get your work done.
  • We've recently launched and are starting to grow.
  • We will offer profit sharing so our small team will receive dividends on profits the company makes.

Why you might not want to work with us

  • We are an early-stage startup, and while we are well funded, we are careful with our runway and haven't splurged on extra perks like gym memberships or 401k matching. You want to work with a large team. We do not intend to hire more until it is painful enough to warrant doing so.

More About Us

We are a startup headquartered in beautiful downtown Asheville, NC. We are a small, close-knit team working to upend the RMM market with our new product. We have recently launched and have acquired our first customers. Though we are a startup, our investors have given us a multi-year runway.

Currently, our agent team is made up of a single amazing developer. This hire will join them to expand the agent team. This developer should be an experienced self-starter that can make an impact on our product development. We aren't interested in someone that just wants to work down a list of pre-defined tasks. Our ideal candidate loves working on products and will help shape the direction of ours. We're going to be improving this product for years and want someone to come on this journey with us.

We really like the Basecamp philosophy and try to make sure that it doesn’t have to be crazy at work. We won’t ask that you work weekends, or late into the night. We don’t mind if you need to leave for an appointment in the middle of the day. We understand that software development doesn’t happen for 8 hours straight and don’t worry about counting time in the chair. We trust that given a fair timeline with a scope that you help us determine you will be able to deliver features. We are concerned with the end goal, not micromanaging you on the way there.

About the Application Process

Collaboration and communication are a critical aspect of how we work, a cover letter is a great way to provide a sample of how you communicate.

In your cover letter, please describe why you’re interested in working at Level, and what draws you to this role in particular. Specifics of your past experience that are relevant to this role are great to include, too.

Pay

We're looking for someone great but we're an early-stage startup. We are offering a rate of 120k plus profit sharing (once we have profits 😅). We hope to grow quickly and are committed to increasing the base pay of everyone on the team at each stage of growth.

As with many young companies, your responsibilities may evolve. Here are some of the things we expect you to take on as a DevOps Engineer:

  • Collaborate with the product engineering teams and the various service support teams in engineering (QA, AppSec, Data Engineering) in service of maintaining, building, and improving our underlying systems so that they are highly available, scalable and performant
  • Actively contribute to improving our systems and evolve our infrastructure: flawless CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes deployments, containers monitoring, automation with infrastructure as code, GitOps, reliability on AWS cloud
  • Join our constant efforts to meet and overcome standards for information security and compliance; ensuring our customer data is as safe as possible is our top priority
  • Proactively identify and validate areas of improvement as necessary by using the best tool available for a given case and constantly researching and evaluating industry trends that fit ChartMogul's needs

Our Tech Stack

We run a combination of Kubernetes clusters and a fleet of Linux machines for our Rails stack, along with multiple microservices backed up by PostgreSQL databases and a Redis datastore. Our legacy infrastructure is running on AWS EKS (Kubernetes and containers).

  • Hands-on experience with high traffic production infrastructure
  • Strong knowledge of Linux and computer networking
  • Experience with AWS cloud and services
  • Experience with configuration management systems
  • Experience with managing and monitoring databases
  • Next to speaking English fluently, you can understand and translate business requirements into clearly articulated technology solutions

Nice to have

  • Understanding the cloud ecosystem in modern software development: Infrastructure as Code, Immutable infrastructure, git, CI/CD pipelines, containers, serverless, monitoring
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience with PostgreSQL databases and RDS
  • Hands-on production experience with CloudFormation or Terraform on AWS cloud

Behaviourally

  • Clear and precise communications, especially when working under the pressure of a production failure and/or incident affecting our users
  • You're passionate about the DevOps culture and keep up with news and technologies in the cloud, networking, Linux, and open-source area
  • You're eager to learn, contribute to design and architecture decisions, and inspire change
  • You value automation; you are eager to spend a bit more time automating things that require more than one manual trigger

What is it like to work at ChartMogul?

  • You’ll join the adventures of an early-stage company and experience what it means to have an incredibly impactful job
  • You’ll become part of a team of nice, awesome, and highly dedicated people who all have the same mission: Helping companies build better businesses
  • Flexible hours with healthy work-life balance
  • All employees, including contractors, receive sick days, paid holiday days, and paternity leave
