Job Description

Dyspatch is looking for a Lead Software Developer to join our dynamic Engineering team. We care about great engineering culture and creating a product that helps people work smarter, not harder. As a Lead Developer you’ll share responsibility for all things technical, including the development of our platform architecture, partner integrations, and data pipelines. In the first 3 months, you will:

  • Get ramped up on our tech stack and architecture, working closely with senior members of the Engineering Team

Why We’re Hiring

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer with experience working in and leading agile development teams. This role will be responsible for building features for our marketplace partners. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience in distributed systems and Golang. Experience in React or React Native is a bonus but not required.

You’ll be leading the development of some of Bud’s most critical internal services that are utilised by product teams across Bud as well as owning a number of core platform exposed services that are non-product specific for domains such as authentication and traffic management. Every request that hits the Bud Platform will end up touching at least one of the services you’re responsible for. You’ll be contributing to Bud-wide architecture as well as actively developing in Bud’s Platform & Security [Product] Team where you’ll be the driving software engineering force in the team (which is mostly composed of SRE/Platform Engineers). You’ll also be a core channel of representing the perspective of backend engineers in the team and helping the team to solve cross-engineering problems.

  • You'll chiefly be using Go working on our various internal or exposed services although we also have a number of services in our Platform written in Python.
  • Using a range of different technologies including Cassandra, MySQL, Redis, Elasticsearch (ELK), RabbitMQ, Prometheus, Grafana, Envoy, Kubernetes, Istio, Vault

A bit about you

OUR TECH STACK

As a serious, business-oriented company, we develop our solutions exclusively in COBOL.

Just kidding! We use modern and diverse IT infrastructure. Our solutions are web-based, with backends in Golang andPython and frontends in Typescript and React. Data storages include PostgreSQL, DynamoDB and Amazon S3. The infrastructure consists of multiple backend services managed via Kubernetes/Helm, integrated with various AWS and third-party services. We also use Google Bazel, a secure and robust build system.

OUR TEAM

We are still small: Project Plato is less than 15 people in total but we are planning to grow to 20 soon. As part of the Project Plato back-end team, you will be working closely with Oleg and another 3 senior engineers. Oleg is our lead backend engineer who has been part of the team since 2015 when we established our office in Amsterdam. Job requirements

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

  • You have a math or computer science background. No diplomas needed, but knowing your graphs and big-Os is a must.
  • You know your way around web services. Parlez-vous HTTP? Veux-tu un cookie?
  • You know well at least TWO of: Golang, Python, C++, Java/C#, Typescript.
  • You are familiar with modern build systems (especially code generation), Unix-based operating systems, Docker/Kubernetes and cloud services.
  • You are a self-learner. You can analyze the code and documentation yourself, and you can ask questions when needed. Our team is small and focused, and we do not have spare time for thorough tutoring :(
  • You are passionate about quality and reliability. This is not a social media app startup, we deal with big money and strict regulations.
  • You are able to take honest and direct feedback and openly discuss the problems.
  • You are not afraid of complex problem domains.
  • Knowledge of frontend technologies is a plus.

We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to join our TechOps squad at Monzo.

Our TechOps squad is primarily responsible for making sure everyone at Monzo has all of the tools they need to do a great job. That means managing all of our devices (predominantly running Mac and Chrome OS), managing our G-Suite domains, providing 1:1 support to Monzonauts across the business, and much much more.

A big contributor to the success TechOps have had to date is the way we’ve embedded engineers in the squad, meaning we’ve been able to automate away a lot of the manual work traditionally associated with a TechOps squad.

This has allowed us to move quickly, achieve an incredible ratio of TechOps people to total employees, and reap the benefits of being able to hire people all across the world without friction.

You’ll help us solve problems such as:

  • How do we continue to offer outstanding service to all of our Monzonauts without exponentially increasing the number of people working in TechOps? What can we build to automate the work of 20 people?
  • What parts of traditional IT can we rethink with code to supercharge TechOps at Monzo?
  • How do we build a seamless, delightful experience for Monzonauts with best-in-class homegrown code and third party services?

The role

You’ll be a backend engineer in the squad. Some of the projects you’ll be involved in might include:

  • Integrating MDM (Mobile Device Management) and making this a function that integrates with everything else at Monzo, from inventory to access levels on your AWS account.
  • Building a seamless way to replicate groups, roles and other logical frameworks across first and third party applications to make authorisation for a Monzonaut a seamless experience.
  • Building on a system to track any and every Monzo-owned asset, from network switches to access passes and everything in between.
  • So much more - you’ll have the opportunity to influence our roadmap and build on the foundations already in place to continue scaling TechOps with Monzo

You’ll work closely with TechOps generalists and engineers from around the business to tackle some of the challenges mentioned above, working at the intersection between Security, People and TechOps to make sure we’re moving forwards together.

Security, scalability and how we continue to support the services you’re building should always be front of mind.

You’ll also have the opportunity to coach and mentor others in the squad on engineering best practices. We want to empower everyone in the squad to automate away the low-value manual work, and you’ll be key to unlocking this potential alongside other engineers in the squad.

Monzo works in project-based sprints in small, interdisciplinary teams

We have around 150 engineers out of roughly 1,400 people in total - and we have big ambitions. There are many interesting challenges ahead, and we're happy for people to move between teams or to specialise, whatever you prefer. As an engineer here you'd be able to work directly with anyone across the company, and we run regular knowledge-sharing sessions so you’ll learn heaps about everything from how banks work to effective communication.

At Monzo you will get to work with a lot of exciting new technology.

  • Cassandra for most persistent data storage
  • Kafka for our asynchronous message queue

  • AWS for most of our infrastructure

Our product squads are truly cross-functional.

This role is all about collaborating across disciplines to test hypotheses and make a difference to customers. As a product backend engineer you’ll work in a squad alongside product managers, marketers, user researchers, designers, mobile engineers, web engineers, data analysts, business analysts, writers and more!

You should apply if

  • You’re someone who doesn't wait to be told what to do. You spot problems and proactively fix them
  • You’re an engineer who's happy writing (or would like to learn to write) views in React and backend services in Go

  • You have ideas about how we can think ‘big picture’ and can scale TechOps going forward

We are seeking a hands-on Head of Engineering for our well funded e-commerce fulfillment startup

Exciting times in e-commerce: E-commerce sales in Europe is projected to be ÂŁ406 billion by 2023, expected to grow 8% per year between 2018-2023. The growth is driven by consumers that increasingly buy more online as well as the emergence of small and medium e-commerce sellers, which have grown at 18% and 28% per year, respectively between 2009-2017. There are 200,000 small and medium e-commerce sellers in the UK alone, selling their products through multiple channels, including marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay, their own websites, and on social media like Facebook and Instagram. Today, these small and medium sellers are ignored by the large incumbent logistics service providers and we are on a mission to change that.

Building a next generation Fulfillment-as-a-Service platform: With this explosive growth in e-commerce, the demand for e-commerce fulfilment and delivery is booming. Bezos is a next generation Fulfillment-as-a-Service (FaaS) platform, that allows small and medium e-commerce sellers to outsource their storage, fulfilment, delivery, and returns and focus on what is more important: growing their businesses. Bezos’ operational model is based on partnering with certified logistics suppliers that will execute the different services on our behalf. We believe there is a massive market opportunity to serve these currently unattended and fast growing small and medium e-commerce sellers. Vernon was the Director of Amazon Flex UK (part of Amazon’s Last Mile Product & Technology team) and part of the Senior Leadership Team of Amazon Logistics UK, and prior to that worked at Zipcar, Bain & Company and JPMorgan (LinkedIn profile here).

We are looking for an exceptional technology leader: Someone that gets excited about the adventure of a startup and wants to build a world class billion dollar business. Someone that enjoys transforming industries, that enjoys changing the way businesses and consumers think about delivering and receiving e-commerce orders. Someone that is hands on, solves problems, and gets their hands dirty in the execution.   • Build Bezos’ Fulfillment-as-a-Service platform
