Job Description

At Horizon, we’re building a New Dimension where Internet economies are fun, accessible, and for the benefit of all participants.

We have two amazing products to make this real:

Sequence, which consists of i) the first user-friendly smart wallet for crypto, NFTs, Web3 + the metaverse, and ii) a developer platform to make building Web3 applications easy on Ethereum and other EVM chains.

And Skyweaver, a digital trading card game—powered by Sequence—where players can win, own, trade and sell their NFT game items.

Sequence is poised to drive Web3 adoption on a massive scale by making blockchain easy, fun and powerful for users and developers. And, Skyweaver is a groundbreaking video game with an unprecedented player-owned economy, novel gameplay, and an already fervent community.

While the challenge is hard, we find it incredibly fun. And, we have the ingredients to make it happen: a well-capitalized company with some of the best investors in the world (Reddit co-founder, Coinbase, Initialized, and more), an amazing team of leaders in the blockchain space, engineers who have built widely popular open source, a former top McKinsey strategy consultant, gaming industry veterans, and founders who have built and sold successful companies. You'll get to work with and learn from them all. Learn more at https://horizon.io/

About the Role

We're looking for someone with experience architecting, writing, testing and shipping production-quality code in Go, with a background in Ethereum development. You are rigourous and have a refined eye for simple arhitecture and clean code, and you are able to balance tradeoffs inherent in all design decisions.

You enjoy building scalable, fault-tolerant systems. You understand the meaning of value and delivering products that achieve business outcomes while laying the foundation of great tech that affects our entire org, and is impactful. This matters to you.

As a senior engineer, you have a deep understanding of designing robust, well-designed code with thoughtful architecture. You can drive and self-direct major areas of our stack. While not a strict requirement, you are comfortable working with and guiding more intermediate and junior engineers when needed.

Given our size, self-driven, and open-minded engineers will thrive best in this role. While small, you'll be working alongside some of the best engineers, and open-source contributors—and a company dedicated to your success. You will learn a lot.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect, develop, and implement the infrastructure, and infrastructure stack of Skyweaver and Sequence
  • Design and implement services that are scalable, and fault-tolerant
  • Build services that interface with the Ethereum blockchain
  • Contribute to open source works in the Sequence stack
  • Extend and evolve our toolchain, to run our stack effectively
  • Design architectural foundations that are robust and sound, so that future engineers can build on your work with ease and speed

Requirements:

  • 5+ years shipping production-grade code in Go
  • Experience and knowledge of the Ethereum blockchain, its tooling and ecosystem
  • Knowledge of distributed systems design
  • Experience with data systems, both in their design and practical use
  • Experience with one of the major cloud providers, AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.
  • Growth mindset. You love to learn, and actively search out new material and technologies

Why Horizon?

  • A chance to deliver massive impact at a small and quickly growing company
  • Competitive salary and equity package
  • Accelerate your career by joining at the early stages
  • Be part of defining Web3, the next generation of the Internet, and creating symbiotic economies where both users and creators share in the value generated by networks
  • Work with an outstanding team made of wonderful people who have built and sold successful companies, launched amazing products, and have rich experience in infrastructure, architecture, blockchain, games, finance, investing, strategy, consulting, design, marketing, community, and more.
  • Work life balance unlike the “crunch” culture you find at larger studios
  • New PC, and generous allowance for work-from-home setup
  • Health, vision and dental benefits for Canadian employees
  • We’re conscious about mental health and have modern vacation policies
  • We invest in everyone’s personal development and subsidize courses, books, and conferences, so you never stop learning
  • Work on hard, big, meaningful problems that can shift markets
  • Learn more about our values and the traits we embody at https://careers.horizon.io/

We are committed to diversity and encourage applicants from all backgrounds, genders and faiths. While we're building incredible products, we also want to add to our wonderful team and company. The best way to do that is to attract talented folks from all areas and to have their experiences inform their work.

It’s ok to screw up! We’ve found that it’s often the ‘stupid’ or unexpected ideas that turn out to be the successful ones - so try it, at least we can say we have!

The only stupid idea, is the untested one! It’s in our DNA - starting a business with founders 12 hours apart, giving our gateway away for free - sure, we did that, and we’d do it again!

Trust starts with you - make it count! Trust is a two-way street - instill it from day one!

Assume best intent! We have each other’s back - we’re all on the same team. Think before you speak or act.

Make things, better! Always try to leave things better than when you found them - change is constant, inevitable and embraced! Be that change we want to see.

Senior Software Engineer at Checkout.com:

Our solutions allow merchants to route dynamically a transaction to the best payment provider to optimise their conversion rate. Your main task will be to design and create or maintain micro-services within our infrastructure. Our product handles millions of transactions within a week. The API has its key part on it but the load is also on a multitude of other services.

You will work closely with our technical teams to learn about the possible technical bottle-necks. We have implemented different technologies such as Go (go-kit toolkit, gRPC…), Kubernetes, AWS, PostgreSQL and many others. Your role would be to lead us to new technologies that our product can benefit from.

Our product handles financial data making uptime one of our key KPIs. We expect that you will be able to work on high-availability and technically challenging programs.

You will join a talented team of 10 engineers, Data Scientists and DevOps, that are tech-passionate, working closely with most of them. Our main goal is to ensure that we can contribute to your personal growth as an engineer.

Payments are often compared to a black-box. Merchants around the world have issues understanding how their performance is and what optimization can be done. Our team is focused on building the best payment performance tool there is. It allows merchants to better understand their online processes as well as offline payments.

We offer 2 products to our merchants:The first, named Telescope, allows us to analyse, understand and make recommendations to a merchant. It does not require any technical integration from them and works mainly through webhooks, pulling data from APIs or parsing exported files.

About You

  • 3 years software development experience in Go
  • Know your way around web-related tech (HTTP, TLS, proxies, API conventions...)
  • Implemented APIs
  • Experience deploying applications as a part of a service-oriented architecture
  • Curious and unafraid of digging deeper to understand how systems of all kinds work
  • Keen to communicate with third-party gateways from a technical point of view as well as to maintain the best relationship as possible
  • Knowledge in the payment ecosystem
  • Worked on critical services
  • Some basic knowledge about ElasticSearch

What you will be doing

  • Payment gateway integrations: Interacting with external APIs through an in-house framework, handling webhooks notifications and parsing bank reconciliation summary files
  • Communication with third party payment gateways
  • Design and implement new workflows on our services

If you don't meet all the requirements but think you might still be right for the role, please apply anyway. We're always keen to speak to people who connect with our mission and values.

Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Backend Developer to help build Bubbly, the Release Readiness platform helping software teams continuously release software with confidence and visibility.

Location:

Helsinki, Finland (remote possible +/-3 EET - relocating / local preferred) Salary and benefits package (including equity) tailored to your needs.

Do you want to take a leading role in developing a brand new technology? Are you ready to take on an exciting challenge at an early stage startup?

We are looking for a Senior Backend Developer to help build Bubbly. Bubbly is a Release Readiness platform currently in development. We are on a mission to help lean software teams continuously release software with confidence and visibility.

About Bubbly:

The initial idea for Bubbly was planted a few years back. DevOps consultants working at Verifa continually received requests from customers for a tool to give them visibility across all their data and pipelines. So we decided to build one! In Summer 2020 with help from Business Finland funding, we built up a team and recently established a new company, Valocode Oy, to focus on Bubbly’s development.

At its core, Bubbly is a very lightweight data platform with data pipelines developed in HCL (HashiCorp Configuration Language). Bubbly aggregates, queries and extracts data from multiple tools in the release process into a single dashboard, providing software teams with visibility and confidence in their release quality. Thus far we have built the core engine and UI, and are working towards releasing Bubbly as a SaaS product later this year. The team are big fans of open source, and Bubbly was recently released in open source public beta. Right now, we are self-funded with plans to secure pre-seed investment this year.

We are a small dedicated team consisting of both technical knowhow and business acumen, and we are currently looking for two more team members - Frontend Developer and Senior Backend Developer. So there is plenty of room to take a leading role in developing a brand new product. And as we are an early stage startup, there is the possibility to have ownership ín the company.

About the role:

You will have a crucial role in developing the Bubbly backend which is entirely written in Golang. We are using NATS and a service-oriented architecture (not quite microservice) where the services communicate via NATS message queues. Postgres is the primary database right now, but we have plans for immutable, append-only databases in the future for more compliance-related activities. As the team was founded from a DevOps company, Verifa, we enjoy our DevOps practices and would hope you will enjoy it also.

Must Haves:

  • Solid knowledge and experience developing in GoLang
  • Solid experience with NATS or other streaming/event-driven systems
  • Practical experience with GraphQL
  • Solid experience with PostgreSQL
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Nice to haves:

We would also appreciate experience or knowledge of the following technologies and practices: * Google Cloud * Kubernetes * Terraform * SvelteJS * Blockchain * Data science * HCL (HashiCorp Configuration Language) * CI/CD & DevOps (continuous practices)

This is a full-time position. We're located in Helsinki. Remote work is possible with a timezone requirement of +/-3 EET.

Interview Process

If this kind of role sounds interesting to you, please submit your CV and application as soon as possible. We are processing applications as we receive them. If your profile and experience look suitable, we’ll have a 30 minute discovery session. For more information or questions please contact jacob@valocode.com.
