Job Description

Fastly helps people stay better connected with the things they love. Fastly’s edge cloud platform enables customers to create great digital experiences quickly, securely, and reliably by processing, serving, and securing our customers’ applications as close to their end-users as possible — at the edge of the Internet. The platform is designed to take advantage of the modern internet, to be programmable, and to support agile software development. Fastly’s customers include many of the world’s most prominent companies, including Vimeo, Pinterest, The New York Times, and GitHub.

We're building a more trustworthy Internet. Come join us.

Principal Software Engineer - Edge Data

You will be one of the first engineers working on a brand-new system that Fastly has been prototyping and is now beginning to operationalize. The system applies cutting-edge distributed systems theory — notably, CRDTs — to Fastly's global network to provide an infrastructure for state at the edge.

What You'll Do

  • Learn the distsys theory and Go implementation of the project to proficiency, becoming a technical "co-founder" and owner
  • Optimize system performance to meet Fastly's Internet-scale requirements, via testing, profiling, refactoring, and redesigning
  • Collaborate with customer-facing teams to define and implement primitives that will power a huge number of future Fastly products
  • Help to design, develop, and participate in a process for onboarding new engineers to the project, with a focus on mentorship and growth
  • Work in a small team that's highly motivated to find new, innovative ways to give our customers new capabilities

What We're Looking For

  • Clear, effective, and empathetic communication skills, both written and verbal, especially when discussing complex technical topics
  • Intermediate+ proficiency with Go (Golang), ideally having built and operated one or more large-scale projects
  • Advanced distributed systems theory experience, especially eventual consistency, and a strong interest in learning more
  • A "systems thinker" who always keeps the big picture in mind, even as they work on the smallest details
  • Effective at asynchronous remote work, with teammates across the world

Why Fastly?

  • We have a huge impact. Fastly is a small company with a big reach. Not only do our customers have a tremendous user base, but we also support a growing number of open source projects and initiatives. Outside of code, employees are encouraged to share causes close to their heart with others so we can help lend a supportive hand.

  • We love distributed teams. Fastly’s home-base is in San Francisco, but we have multiple offices and employees sprinkled around the globe. In fact, 50% of our employees work outside of SF! An international remote culture is in our DNA.

  • We care about you. Fastly works hard to create a positive environment for our employees, and we think your life outside of work is important too. We support our teams with great benefits like up to 20 weeks of paid parental leave, options for free medical/dental/vision plans, and an open vacation program that enables our folks to take the time they need to recharge (some benefits may vary by location).

  • We value diversity. Growing and maintaining our inclusive and diverse team matters to us. We are committed to being a company where our employees feel comfortable bringing their authentic selves to work and have the ability to be successful -- every day.

  • We are passionate. Fastly is chock full of passionate people and we’re not ‘one size fits all’. Fastly employs authors, pilots, skiers, parents (of humans and animals), makeup geeks, coffee connoisseurs, and more. We love employees for who they are and what they are passionate about.

We’re always looking for humble, sharp, and creative folks to join the Fastly team. If you think you might be a fit, please apply!

FullStack Engineer
FuzzBuzz
San Francisco, United States
$110,000 to $140,000 a year

Job Description

About Fuzzbuzz

We're Fuzzbuzz and we're building a fuzzing as a service platform that integrates into CI systems and the modern software testing workflow. Fuzzing is a type of automated testing that generates and runs thousands of inputs per second on your code to try and find bugs and vulnerabilities. It uses code coverage and other signals from your code to guide the tests it generates and runs. You can read more here.

Last year, we raised a $2.7M seed round from some of the best tech investors & founders, namely Y Combinator, Fuel Capital, Solomon Hykes (Docker founder), Flo Leibert (Mesosphere founder), Spencer Kimball (CockroachDB founder), Michael Stoppelman (Yelp ex-CTO).

About the Team

We're currently a team of 5 people and prefer staying small - allowing us to iterate faster and get very comfortable working with each other (the 3 founders have been roommates since first year university). That means you'll be 16% of the team - all of the work you do will be extremely critical and immediately impact users. We pride ourselves in being a very humble, but capable team - the 2 founding engineers each have 20+ years of engineering experience.

Since we are really small, we prefer having everyone working at the same location. We’re at 541 Jefferson Ave in Redwood City, CA - 10 mins from the Caltrain (everyone's currently WFH because of COVID-19. We will resume working from the office when it is safe).

Why Fuzzbuzz?

1. Define the DevOps and security standards of tomorrow

Fuzzing is seeing more widespread usage than ever before, but there is still work to be done before it sees mass adoption. We're uniquely positioned to bring fuzzing to the developer community and make software testing more effective than ever before.

2. Product-first culture with an emphasis on engineering

Working on a technical product means working with very technical people. We embrace technical challenges and take them head-on. We use tools/frameworks because they get the job done, not because they're the current flavor of the month.

3. Early stage, funded startup

By joining Fuzzbuzz at this critical early stage, as one of our first team members, you'll be shaping not only our product, but our company & engineering culture as well. We're well funded, and pay in the top 10% of companies in SF at our stage.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design, architect and build the Fuzzbuzz platform (frontend & API)
  • Work with our designer to build a beautiful platform with a focus on simplicity
  • Work with fuzzing team to integrate fuzzing tooling into the platform
  • Work with founders to define product roadmap
  • Define internal engineering standards, tooling and processes
  • Work and iterate closely with users

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years experience as a full stack software engineer
  • Solid understanding of Typescript
  • Experience building complex SPAs in Angular or React (using TS)
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Go
  • Experience designing and building APIs
  • Experience working with AWS
  • Familiar with Linux
  • Strong fundamentals in distributed systems design and development
  • Obsession with users and providing real value to customers rather than working with “cool tech”
  • Ability to navigate & take ownership of complex problems from design through to final implementation

Benefits

  • Full health, dental & vision insurance
  • Caltrain & Parking covered
  • Unlimited, guilt-free PTO
  • Flexible hours
  • Ergonomic workstation (standing desk, Herman Miller chairs, custom monitor/laptop set up)

Platform engineering at Massdriver is different. We dogfood our product and the platform components you design are the components we expose to our customers to design their platform engineering environments. Your work is the product.

This role will own and design platform engineering components and their APIs including our provisioning engine, command-line tools, and our cloud query API. You will have the opportunity to work and contribute to a number of open source tools as well as design custom tooling.

  • Professional experience developing large, scalable backend applications
  • Strong understanding of system architecture and design; with consideration given to security, performance, and scalability
  • Owned the technical design of major features or projects and can articulate the reasoning behind trade-offs made in your designs
  • Experience with IaC tools like Terraform or Pulumi

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Kubernetes
  • Experience with open telemetry
  • Experience as an open-source maintainer

Responsibilities:

  • Developing in a high-security micro-services oriented environment

  • Half-day Fridays

  • Ownership. Our engineers have felt the pain of being prevented from trying new things by the overhead of DevOps. We empower our engineers to solve customer problems and add value.
  • Growth. As we build this core team of engineers, we are looking for the future leaders of our company that will help guide us as we scale.

About the interview

  • 15-minute call w/ Cory (CEO)
  • 30-minute discussion about the role and your experience w/ Dave (CTO)
  • 1-hour coding session on an open source issue of your choosing. w/ Chris (COO)

Our coding interview is very different.

Our goal is for you to be the expert on the call and to see what it's like to work with you as the new employee:

  • Pick an issue on an open-source project in Golang that you think will take an hour or more.
  • Don't overthink picking the issue!
  • Feel free to familiarize yourself with the codebase, the issue history, the test suite - whatever you think you need to be the 'expert' during the interview. Don't share the issue with us.
  • At interview time, you are in the driver seat, you are the expert. Our goal is to see what it's like to work with you on our first day.
  • Please don't actually start work on the issue until the interview.

About Massdriver

Massdriver is changing the way software engineers provision, secure, and observe cloud infrastructure.

We aim to provide all of the benefits of infrastructure-as-code including parity, reproducibility, and auditability in a simple to use diagramming platform. No more fighting with HCL or spending hours reading cloud-specific API documentation. Now you can manage your infrastructure the same way you design it, at the drawing board.

Job Description

We are building the world's premier Operational Intelligence platform for Blockchain. We strive to develop our systems by observing the best practices of our craft; this means writing testable, performant, easy to maintain and constantly improving code, while enabling our company to iterate our product fast and stay ahead.

These are the early days of our platform, and as a Senior Backend Engineer you will be able to contribute, influence and take ownership in significant parts of our systems. Our goal is to build a very high performance platform, capable of analyzing thousands of transactions across multiple blockchain networks in real-time.

If you are a Senior Software Engineer, with a solid understanding of distributed systems, passion for your work and would love to work with a geographically distributed team, join us!

What this position is all about:

  1. Designing and implementing crawlers, software agents and accompanying backend services that feed our Operational Intelligence platform with hundreds of metrics pertaining to the performance and health of Blockchain networks. You will be expected to demonstrate capacity to code (or pick up competence in) Python or Golang.
  2. Working under a Scrum or Kanban framework and releasing product increments on a continuous basis.
  3. Owning your work. This means writing unit tests, ensuring proper containerization, observability/instrumentation and documentation for your code.
  4. Understanding, participating and contributing to the company goals, regardless of your role. Metrika is a small company with a very inclusive culture. We are looking for people that share those values with us.

Please note: Our Engineering team is predominantly based in Europe. This position is currently open to those resident and currently able to work in the European Economic Area (EU, Norway, Liechtenstein), Switzerland, the UK as well the eastern United States/Canada (UTC-4/UTC-5 timezone)

  3. Excellent understanding of TDD, agile development methodology and version control.
  4. The ability to function autonomously to solve problems, and deliver working software. Our geographic distribution requires people that can work well on their own.
