About the role

Golang/Rust/Postgres Developer for Algorithmic Trading Company (Zurich)
This is not a typical company. You will be working with one other developer who will also be managing you and reviewing your code at the moment. That is me.
I am based in Switzerland though I am an American.
I want to reduce tasks to simple, well defined programs (where possible which is most places)
There are many aspects of an automated trading system that need to recur (e.g. ingestion of historical market data). If these "aspects" are broken down into many small parts, if one has a problem the others will still be running so most of the other programs can continue. If there are say 3 large programs and one fails, then the whole system must stop.
I am a developer myself so understand how to convey engineering requirements.
I am flexible about software language, to an extent. I am learning Rust so if a small program can be written in Rust I am open to it. I also want to learn other programming languages over time. So if you are into Clojure or Haskell it could be interesting to wade into those waters over time

Our products comprise multiple services and those services are written in various languages (the best language for that particular task), but as a member of the Edge Stack team you’ll work primarily in Golang and Python.
You’ll work on Linux or Mac: some of us work on one platform, some on the other, each choosing whichever platform makes us the most productive.
You’ll also use your favorite IDE or editor; although we use different ones, we’re oddly free of those silly “mine is the best” discussions :).
You’ll work on our API gateway and ingress products on a distributed team building a feature, or reviewing open source community PRs, or improving performance, etc., in six-week development cycles, and then you’ll cool down between cycles doing self-directed learning, improving your tools, or maybe even hacking up a demo of an exciting new idea of yours.

You’ll have a weekly all-company (Zoom) meeting to stay current on all the things, but we try hard to minimize the number of scheduled meetings in order to maximize focus time.

About the Role
Our database, DefraDB, empowers developers to build edge and decentralized projects to scale fast, survive anything, and thrive everywhere while ensuring their users’ data privacy. We are looking for backend software engineers who are excited about growing an open-source NoSQL database to join our database teams. Working closely with our CTO and co-founders, you will be part of a collaborative culture striving to make user-centric data interoperable across Web3.

Contribute to the growth of the open-source database, DefraDB. You bring your expertise and commitment to excellence to help build a database that makes data easy for everyone.
Improve the performance of DefraDB.
Ensure that DefraDB remains scalable, survivable, and consistent as we continue to grow as a company.
You're most likely to succeed in this role if you
A passion for working on complex technical products and have exposure to topics such as distributed/decentralized systems, concurrency control, data replication, file systems, or NoSQL processing.
Have substantial, demonstrable experience writing high-quality software in Go
Have deep knowledge of the Go ecosystem, especially with regard to database applications
Are fascinated by issues arising due to concurrency and parallelism
Have participated in Open Source software development and/or communities
Can make pragmatic design tradeoffs, balancing features, maintainability, and delivery time
An understanding of system design.
Experience building collaborative relationships with your colleagues. You enjoy being part of the code review process and partnering with your teammates on challenging problems.
5+ years of relevant experience.
Success in this role means

tl;dr: We're looking for an excellent engineer with solid Go experience to join our small, distributed development team. We're in Los Angeles, San Francisco & Paris; substantial time-zone overlap with CET (Paris) is key because our lead frontend engineer lives & works there.
Who we are
At Synthro, we are creating Foam, a new paradigm to collect, organize, create, and share your data, to help people think better together.
While we have developed core elements of the experience, we have many technical challenges ahead. Our team collaborates and leverages process, automated testing and group decision-making to get stuff done.
Our technology environment is Linux based, runs in AWS and utilizes Go, React, and JavaScript. We are leveraging an array of AWS services to deliver our solution and extensively take advantage of open-source solutions.
We're in the scrappy startup phase: we all work from home, even before the pandemic.
Role overview
We're hiring a Backend Developer to work with our team. You will focus on the backend for our web app. You will work closely with our frontend developer and be responsible for the API, data models, architecture, and AWS environment.
We love junior developers, but this role is for someone senior.

Must-haves
You've built and shipped Go services (RESTful, HTTP), preferably something you can share with us
You dream in idiomatic Go (2+ years experience highly desired)
You don’t feel like you’re done until you have 85% unit test coverage
You have solid knowledge of Postgres, specifically stored procedures & triggers
You have solid working knowledge of core AWS services (ECS, EC2, RDS, S3, Cloudfront, Route 53)
Your git history reflects you’re an excellent written (and verbal) communicator
Nice-to-haves
You have worked from home or remotely for a distributed team
You have experience with infrastructure-as-code (we use Terraform on AWS)
You live in or within an hour of CET (Paris)
