Job Description

Our true purpose at Castor

Castor is one of the leading platforms for data collection in medical research. We believe standardizing and reusing datasets is key to overcoming the healthcare challenges of the future.

How we operate

Our main Electronic Data Capture (EDC) application runs on a proven stack consisting of Ubuntu, Nginx, PHP and MySQL. For our cloud installations, we orchestrate these setups by using Terraform combined with Ansible for the server configuration management.

Due to the nature of processing medical data, we have clients in different regions across the globe, often with specific regulatory constraints around where and how their research data is stored. To meet these customer demands we combine both traditional as well as cloud-based hosting solutions.

Most of our clients prefer to run in Azure, but we’re using Google Cloud Platform for things like Kubernetes hosting of greenfield projects, blob storage for scalable file upload storage and their Key Management System (KMS) to further secure our data.

For our metrics we’ve begun standardizing on Prometheus and we’re moving towards Loki for log aggregation. We use PagerDuty for alerting, communicate via Slack and host our code on Github.

Why we’re growing our team

With our recent expansion have come new challenges, both in how we organize ourselves and in how we manage and scale our infrastructure in the future.

To further these efforts we have formed a Platform team consisting of SRE and Software Engineering, which we are now looking to grow with the addition of an additional SRE.

Additionally, due to the sensitive nature of medical data, Castor is certified for both ISO/IEC 9001 (quality) and 27001 (Information security). In addition, we have to adhere to a number of other regulations, including Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.

Our goal is to unite these requirements with emerging SRE practices around infrastructure as code and other principles to create a well designed and documented system, while still allowing us to remain flexible to change.

How you will contribute

Our absolute commitment to patient data security and privacy informs our vendor selection with certified datacenter and cloud providers. To achieve real impact in medical research, Castor needs to operate security around the world.

Historically, our production platform has run on top of managed hosting services. This model doesn’t scale well for our global, international footprint, which is why we are currently expanding our in-house knowledge and transitioning to Infrastructure-as-a-Service providers.

As a Site Reliability Engineer, you’ll have the ability to shape our operations and continuously deliver a working product. Working very closely with the development teams, you’ll collaborate in supporting and structuring our efforts around automation, observability and security. With your help we plan to scale the Castor platform to the next level.

Some things we worked on recently

Whilst there are many operational challenges as we continue to grow and scale at Castor, our Platform team has made great improvements to a variety of our systems already. To give you some examples of what we achieved last month:

  • Migrated our DNS to AWS Route53
  • Set up automatic documentation pipelines using MkDocs
  • Moved our CI/CD pipelines from Jenkins to CircleCI
  • Built a key-service on AWS Lambda to store disk encryption keys off-site for an otherwise region-local setup

Your background

You have helped run web-facing services under production workloads and have experienced the challenges that come with maintaining and scaling these systems. Making and owning decisions about systems architecture together with your team is something you enjoy and feel comfortable with.

Qualities we’re looking for include:

  • A good grasp on how *NIX systems operate
  • The ability to evaluate and implement best practices for IT operations
  • A working knowledge of both cloud-native and traditional systems architecture and the trade-offs between them
  • Experience with a configuration management framework such as Ansible, Chef, Puppet or SaltStack
  • The ability and desire to work with a wide range of open source technologies
  • A strong privacy- and security mindset
  • Experience with some aspects of Observability and distributed systems: from monitoring, logging and metrics instrumentation to resiliency to failure
  • A good understanding of how relational databases operate
  • Experience with at least one programming or scripting language, preferably Python or Go(lang)
  • Knowledge that a list of skills and requirements doesn’t mean you have to tick every single box to apply ;)

How we say thank you

At Castor we truly live our core values, believing we can achieve anything with a healthy and happy team. With this in mind, we offer the following benefits:

  • Our own ‘Castor Burrow’ - brand new offices by Amsterdam Amstelstation
  • A competitive salary plus an annual company bonus plan
  • Employee Stock Option Programme incentive
  • 30 days annual leave plus 6 public holidays
  • An individual training and professional development budget
  • Flexible working with the opportunity to work from home 1 day per week
  • Meditation room with daily yoga, mindfulness and company subscription to Calm
  • Lunch and healthy snacks in the office every day
  • A new Mac or Dell laptop

Job Description

Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands (relocation & visa) or remote (European time zones).

WHO WE ARE

After the 2008 financial crash, the international financial and business environment is more regulated than ever. The amount of required paperwork has increased exponentially. The deals are being blocked, the accounts are being frozen, the business is often getting paralyzed.

Project Plato was born in 2015 as an autonomous R&D unit working for Dolfin, an established British investment company, with the aim of automating sensitive business operations. We are a young and ambitious team frustrated by inefficiency of existing solutions.

5 years later, with the help of our software solutions, Dolfin was able to have

  • $4.1bn in client assets under management
  • $650m monthly brokerage flow
  • 10x increased speed of customer and employee onboarding
  • 30x more efficiency of its compliance officers

But this is only the beginning. Our mission is to help companies and business professionals around the world communicate with each other and do business with trust and simplified paperwork.

OUR TECH STACK

As a serious, business-oriented company, we develop our solutions exclusively in COBOL.

Just kidding! We use modern and diverse IT infrastructure. Our solutions are web-based, with backends in Golang andPython and frontends in Typescript and React. Data storages include PostgreSQL, DynamoDB and Amazon S3. The infrastructure consists of multiple backend services managed via Kubernetes/Helm, integrated with various AWS and third-party services. We also use Google Bazel, a secure and robust build system.

We strive to make our development process predictable, change-proof and well-organized to achieve the fastest possible product delivery pace without compromising reliability.

OUR TEAM

We are still small: Project Plato is less than 15 people in total but we are planning to grow to 20 soon. As part of the Project Plato back-end team, you will be working closely with Oleg and another 3 senior engineers. Oleg is our lead backend engineer who has been part of the team since 2015 when we established our office in Amsterdam. We are a group that values trust, growth, agility, mutual respect, taking ownership, and learning from each other through a culture of open feedback.

Job requirements

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

  • You have a math or computer science background. No diplomas needed, but knowing your graphs and big-Os is a must.

  • You know well at least TWO of: Golang, Python, C++, Java/C#, Typescript.
  • You are familiar with modern build systems (especially code generation), Unix-based operating systems, Docker/Kubernetes and cloud services.
  • You are a self-learner. You can analyze the code and documentation yourself, and you can ask questions when needed. Our team is small and focused, and we do not have spare time for thorough tutoring :(
  • You are passionate about quality and reliability. This is not a social media app startup, we deal with big money and strict regulations.
  • You are able to take honest and direct feedback and openly discuss the problems.
  • You are not afraid of complex problem domains.

Job description

Location: Remote or Amsterdam, NL(Visa sponsorship available)

Will you join us on a journey to disrupt the trillion-dollar travel industry? We are looking for the best and brightest who share our passion for travellers, data, and product.

FindHotel believes travel is the one thing that really opens minds to new ideas, cultures, and ways of thinking. Our mission is to get every traveller in the world the best accommodation deal. From adventure travel and backpacking to honeymoons and family vacations, we deeply care so that every traveller can make the best-informed accommodation choice at the absolute best conditions for every trip.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Back-End Engineer to help build the most scalable and flexible APIs in the industry. You will be joining FindHotel’s Marketplace Platform Tribe. We are working with a modern stack consisting of Go, Redis, AWS (ElastiCache, ECS, S3, Batch), Snowflake, and more. We process thousands of requests per second and integrate with many suppliers and other partners. The products developed by the Offers team are a core part of FindHotel’s platform allowing us to offer the best possible comparison and offers to every traveller, worldwide. Hence, anything that you will develop and ship on production will have an immediate effect on our users and on our business performance. We work in a flexible, results-oriented and customer-centric team structure, focussed on shipping value in a collaborative fashion, with hopefully just the right amount of bureaucracy.

Help to maintain and improve our infrastructure and scale it to support our continuous growth in a cost-effective way.

What a day in the office might look like

In the morning, you and your fellow engineers have a refinement session with the PO to discuss the upcoming features on the roadmap. You carefully consider the impact of the new feature on the entire product and raise questions and make suggestions of what is the most pragmatic approach to balance the technical excellence with the time to market. You are part of a discussion that builds on top of each other suggestions, ideas and comments. Today you have chosen to come to the office and after lunch you play table tennis or pool or go for a walk with colleagues in the city centre. In the afternoon, you enter a deep work period and finish working on improving a core component in the rates and availability API. Once down with that work you jump on a zoom call with the rest of the team to discuss the challenges and next steps with the PoC the team is building in this sprint. Throughout the day you monitor the product operations using DataDog.

  • You hold a BSc or MSc in Computer Science or related field
  • You have a proven track record of designing, developing and shipping highly scalable software

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team. If you are looking to join us remotely, we'll need you to be located within UTC-4 to UTC+6 to reasonably overlap with your team members.

At our core, we build highly performant, scalable and reliable services and components. We work with modern technologies such as Go and Elixir - and, as we embrace the DevOps culture, our infrastructure-as-code in the cloud (AWS) is managed and run using tools like Docker, Jenkins, and Terraform. You will be a part of a squad of bright engineers with a passion for delivering great software, as well as team members from a broader range of disciplines - data analysts and scientists, product owners, UX experts, and marketing specialists.

  • Support the growth of junior and intermediate engineers by coaching them in their daily tasks, as well as raising the bar of how things are done within both your team and the bigger engineering group

What can you expect at the beginning of this experience?

  • In your first week, you will get acquainted to the squads, its codebase and the tooling, with the goal of shipping something to production and build confidence early on;
  • In your first month, you will get to know more people from the other squads and disciplines, in order to understand the foundation of the business and the various bits it is made of;
  • One quarter in, you will be effectively an active member of your squad and your teammates will fully count on you; you will have built meaningful relationships within the company and be comfortable discussing ideas, inside and outside of your squad's scope; ideally, you will have presented a topic you are fond of in one of our internal knowledge sharing sessions and/or demoed some work the team did during our weekly all-hands meeting

Typical day activities

  • Team sessions (with your fellow engineers and PO) to check data and brainstorm ways to improve several services performance and design scalable solutions
  • Solve open issues that affect component infrastructure reliability
  • Propose and discuss with fellow engineers efficient solutions for components and architectural design.

Requirements: Who we're looking for

  • You are used to work and think outside of the box, and not afraid to present unconventional ideas and solutions.
  • You have at least 6 years experience in back-end development using a modern set up and tooling
  • You have a great understanding of APIs, databases, data structures, queues, and all things back-end, with a strong passion for automation

  • You are flexible, curious, and data-guided in helping us decide what to work on next

  • A competitive compensation package and Stock Appreciation Rights.
  • Flexible time off (take as many holidays as you need) and a chance to work remotely - we measure results, not time spent at keyboard.
