The Role
90PoE’s mission is big. It’s not going to be easy but with the support and determination from our stakeholders and the brilliant people we have hired we can achieve anything. Right now, we're seeking an experienced senior data engineer to help the Vessel Performance Stream. This is crucial role for one of the most innovative streams of the company. You will interact closely with the other data engineers and data scientists to take effective architectural and technical choices for high throughput data stream systems. This is an incredible opportunity to help innovate the maritime industry to increase vessel and fleet performance with the help of AI and real time metrics collected on board.
Technology
Our platform ingests data directly from our hardware running on vessels, as well as various third-party sources, using various technologies such as Kafka, MQTT, REST, gRPC, and normalises it for processing by our bespoke micro-batch engine.
Platform overview
Our tech stack consists of multiple client applications communicating using GraphQL to microservice containers orchestrated by Kubernetes. Most of our services are written in Golang with stream processing in Golang and Java, they use gRPC for communication, achieve high scalability thanks to Apache Kafka based event driven architecture, persist data to a mix of RDBS and No-SQL databases including Postgres, MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, S3 and Elasticsearch. We use CI/CD and gitops to deploy to production multiple times per week.

Stream uses Go for our video SFU & chat API. We power chat for many large apps like Strava, Nextdoor, Patreon, IBM, Adobe and Midjourney. In addition to Go we use CockroachDB/Postgres, RocksDB, Raft and Redis.
We are willing to train you on Go if you’re experienced on a different tech stack (we have a 10 week internal onboarding program focused on Go, scalability etc.). Solid engineering experience and motivation to learn is more relevant than prior experience with the language. Roles open from entry level to director/principal go engineers. Working remotely: The Third Light development team embraced remote working a few years ago and now has workers in more than one country. We strive to provide a friendly, fun, supportive remote-working culture and we refine our processes to make remoting easier. We will welcome your ideas and contributions. We provide computing equipment and cover reasonable costs incurred from running a home office.
Normally, as a new starter, you'd come to the office for a few weeks to get to know each other. Due to Coronavirus you will no-doubt join us remotely, at least temporarily, which will bring interesting challenges in how best to introduce you to, and integrate you into, the development team—how to train you, how to help familiarise yourself with our systems and ways of working. We see this as an interesting challenge so we’re working it out at the moment. We're planning a fully-remote ‘onboarding’ process with team meetups, one-to-one sessions and pair programming as well as online social gatherings for you when you join.
