Job Description
Weâre looking for a Backend Engineer to join our TechOps squad at Monzo.
Our TechOps squad is primarily responsible for making sure everyone at Monzo has all of the tools they need to do a great job. That means managing all of our devices (predominantly running Mac and Chrome OS), managing our G-Suite domains, providing 1:1 support to Monzonauts across the business, and much much more.
A big contributor to the success TechOps have had to date is the way weâve embedded engineers in the squad, meaning weâve been able to automate away a lot of the manual work traditionally associated with a TechOps squad.
This has allowed us to move quickly, achieve an incredible ratio of TechOps people to total employees, and reap the benefits of being able to hire people all across the world without friction.
Youâll help us solve problems such as:
How do we continue to offer outstanding service to all of our Monzonauts without exponentially increasing the number of people working in TechOps? What can we build to automate the work of 20 people?
What parts of traditional IT can we rethink with code to supercharge TechOps at Monzo?
How do we build a seamless, delightful experience for Monzonauts with best-in-class homegrown code and third party services?
The role
Youâll be a backend engineer in the squad. Some of the projects youâll be involved in might include:
Integrating MDM (Mobile Device Management) and making this a function that integrates with everything else at Monzo, from inventory to access levels on your AWS account.
Building a seamless way to replicate groups, roles and other logical frameworks across first and third party applications to make authorisation for a Monzonaut a seamless experience.
Building on a system to track any and every Monzo-owned asset, from network switches to access passes and everything in between.
So much more - youâll have the opportunity to influence our roadmap and build on the foundations already in place to continue scaling TechOps with Monzo
Youâll work closely with TechOps generalists and engineers from around the business to tackle some of the challenges mentioned above, working at the intersection between Security, People and TechOps to make sure weâre moving forwards together.
Security, scalability and how we continue to support the services youâre building should always be front of mind.
Youâll also have the opportunity to coach and mentor others in the squad on engineering best practices. We want to empower everyone in the squad to automate away the low-value manual work, and youâll be key to unlocking this potential alongside other engineers in the squad.

Monzo works in project-based sprints in small, interdisciplinary teams
We have around 150 engineers out of roughly 1,400 people in total - and we have big ambitions. There are many interesting challenges ahead, and we're happy for people to move between teams or to specialise, whatever you prefer. As an engineer here you'd be able to work directly with anyone across the company, and we run regular knowledge-sharing sessions so youâll learn heaps about everything from how banks work to effective communication.

This role can be based in our London office, but we're open to distributed working (with ad hoc meetings in London once COVID is over).

**Our product teams each own a different part of the product, building features that improve Geckoboard for our customers. Some of our recent work has ranged from a new send-to-Slack feature, SSO and in the team youâll be joining initially, weâve been building a brand new internal framework for importing, storing, and analysing data from third-party APIs we integrate with. We know that investing in our Data Platform is the best way we can deliver flexible, high-quality integrations quickly and easily. The new framework takes care of managing and scheduling imports, responding to webhooks, receiving analytics queries, migrating data from one version to the next and allows us to build internal gRPC services using a common protobuf interface upon it.
**Platform
**We believe that we can only be successful as an Engineering team if we are constantly and systematically investing in our tooling, our common systems, and our developer experience, this is where our Platform team comes in. Our recent work has ranged from rapid response work to improving test and trace coverage, migrating existing services to Go modules and support for other teams. We're also working on enabling older RESTful services to be migrated onto gRPC with a GraphQL API gateway in front.

Work where you work best:
While most of our team are normally based in our leafy East London office, a lot of us work remotely at least a day or two during the week. This means weâve always been intentional about making sure our ways-of-working are remote-friendly so we can support that flexibility for everyone. We also have fully remote team members, though the expectation is that youâre comfortable with a visit to the London office about once a quarter (except during pandemics).
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, our office remains closed and everyone on the team is working from home presently. Weâre likely to continue working from home over the Winter. We keep a close eye on the government guidance, regularly update the team, and plan to open our office only when itâs safe to do so again.
Some of our team have shorter working weeks and weâre more than happy to try to accommodate this or another arrangement whenever possible. Just let us know what works best for you or that youâd like to chat about it in your application.

About the role
We're looking for a software engineer who has held senior positions in engineering teams within high-growth, high-scale startups, who will operate with a high level of autonomy, ensuring impeccable reliability and availability. "Core platform"
When we refer to the "core platform", we mean the services which underpin the processes of all insurance activities on our system.
For example, we expect one of these to be the "policy service", which might be responsible for ensuring compliant issuance of policies, coordinating mid-term adjustments, preventing overlapping policies (double insurance), etc.
Other services could include user authentication, risk & pricing calculation, handling the process of modifying user data in-line with any mid-term adjustment requirements.
All services we consider to be part of the core platform will have strict requirements around stability, data integrity and transactional safety. All functionality must fail safely and explicitly, for example using 2-phase commit processes or other similar techniques. Responsibilities
Set the technical direction for cloud and networking technologies and the implementation of a distributed compute solution
Research and suggest updates to process and technology regularly to stay relevant

Ensure software is designed and implemented for quality, robustness and scale

Contribute to and ensure the completion of code development so that product releases reach general availability on time
Expectations
Experience and understanding of production-ready services in a Cloud-like environment
Understanding of architectural designs and impacts resulting in real-world implementation
Hands-on experience working building large scale web or cloud architectures
Continued development experience; writing code, tests, and debugging issues
Strong grasp of core architectural, programming principles and networking
Experience with Go or similar languages (Java, C/C++, Rust)
Demonstrable architectural concepts (SOA, Containerization) with coding and handling services through Docker
Experience with Kubernetes or similar systems (Swarm, Nomad)
Track record in multiple configuration management tools like Chef, Ansible, Puppet or Terraform
Exposure to open source networking projects in the realm of cloud, PaaS/IaaS, containerization and distributed computing
Awareness of Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN)
Experience of modern deployment & associated tooling, integration, technology, patterns and release methodologies including automated configuration to design, build & provision at scale
Evidence of design and delivery of different scales of digital technical architectures resulting in real-world implementation
Passion for good documentation of processes and architectures, alongside open communication

A day in the life:
Your primary responsibility is training and knowledge sharing with client Engineering and Development teams. As youâve spent most of your career coding and discovering strategies for successful DevOps or Cloud Native adoption, you are enthused by the concept of transferring this to new teams as they enhance their capabilities further
Mentoring client engineering teams in the adoption of new tools, technologies, techniques, patterns and processes, ultimately helping leverage a range of tools and methodologies
Driving the adoption of development best practice through whatever method is practical given the obstacles encountered.
Representing Armakuni and communicating our vision to client engineering teams, technical management and executives when required
Delivering training and support on world-class PaaS solutions composed of best-of-breed cloud native and CI/CD tools such as Cloud Foundry, PKS and Concourse

What we look for
Background in development or operations; weâre looking for senior engineers.

Our backend engineers have a variety of different backgrounds
We have several non-graduates; only some of us studied Computer Science; one of the team has a degree in Marketing; some of us have worked in huge companies; some have only ever worked in startups; others are former consultants. As long as you enjoy learning new things, weâd love to talk to you.

Monzoworks in project-based sprints insmall, interdisciplinary teams
We have around 150 engineers out of roughly 800 people in total - and we have big ambitions. There are many interesting challenges ahead, and we're happy for people to move between teams or to specialise, whatever you prefer. As an engineer here you'd be able to work directly with anyone across the company, and we run regular knowledge-sharing sessions so youâll learn heaps about everything from how banks work to effective communication.

At the moment, the following teams are looking for backend engineers:
Product
The product backend team work primarily on creating backend services and APIs for our in-app user-facing features. They work closely with our mobile engineers and designers to create a delightful user experience, and to drive growth and retention. Projects that Product backend engineers have worked on recently include Summary (giving people insight into their finances to empower them to spend sensibly) and the Current Account Switch Service (all the hard work to allow users to move to Monzo quickly and easily).
Lending
The Lending team works on making borrowing money simple, fair and transparent. They've already shipped and scaled overdrafts to hundreds of thousands of Monzo customers and they've made it easy to take out a loan without the unfair fees or confusing pricing that you find elsewhere. They work on everything from the way borrowing works in the app, right down to how they move and account for money that our customers borrow. One of the most interesting problems they face is deciding how much to lend and to whom. The team believes that they can make access to credit fairer and more transparent.
Logistics
We can help you relocate to London, we can sponsor visas, and we're open to remote working (as long as you can spend around 20% of your time in London).
We offer competitive salaries based on skills and experience, which could be anywhere between ÂŁ40,000 - ÂŁ100,000 per year.
