Backend Engineer
Jodel
Berlin, Germany
€55,000 to €65,000 a year
October 2018
3 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old
This job posting is no longer available

Job Description

We created Jodel to let you instantly connect, share, and engage with the community around you. We built thriving local communities across Europe and continue to expand globally. With over 1 million users creating more than 6 million posts per day, we have one of the industry's highest retention rates. We've attracted great investors such as Christophe Maire, Adam d’Angelo, and the Floodgate Fund, and even been the subject of several academic papers.

We're growing our Engineering team around a culture of sustainability and empowerment. We're dealing with dynamics such as being local, signup-lean and many more, which give us new problems to solve -- we’re literally breaking new ground in the Social Network space. Data-driven by default, with a bias for quality and code sustainability, and fostering a solid DevOps and Automated Testing culture, Jodel's Engineering team is the place to be!

Attitude we're looking for * You’re naturally motivated and proud of doing great work; * Numbers and data are the best way to drive your decisions; * You have a strong personality, sense of ownership and responsibility; * You put people and human interactions above processes and rules; * You understand the value of "measure twice - cut once" and you work by this mantra; * You own your successes and your failures, and constantly seek to improve; * You keep your mind on the product we're building, and are permanently aware of how each small action influences its success.

What we value * Your studies were in Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering; * You're a problem solver, and you’re eager to experiment and learn new things; * You write code optimizing for clarity and readability; * You value testing very highly; * You write software aiming at reducing the cost of change; * You enjoy pair programming and code reviews, and see your job as a collaborative effort rather than solitary work; * Engineering work is mostly about compromises and so you're always open to discuss different approaches to problems; * You're happy to collaborate with your community and industry, either in open source projects or presenting at meetups and conferences;

Skills we're looking for * You have experience with either Node.js or Golang, but you're definitely interested in doing more Golang as part of your job; * You want to work in Distributed Systems; * You have experience with MongoDB and Redis, beyond "I have played with it in the past"; * You have a bias to automate things when possible; * You’re ready to embrace a DevOps culture, because an Engineer’s work doesn’t end after we ‘git push’; * You're ready to work with Linux, Cloud providers, Docker, Kubernetes

What do we offer? * An Empowered Team -- Engineering owns tech debt and tech improvement decisions; we collaborate tightly with our product team but we're all very mindful not to step on each other's toes. We own technical decisions, take responsibility and are accountable for them.. * Preventive culture, rather than reactive -- While some of us participate in on call duties, we have a very low amount of actual production emergencies. A lot of energy goes into fixing root causes and we are very proud of not having anyone in firefighting mode. * Career building is part of the deal -- you don't join to just write tests and contribute to the product - you also join to improve your career. We pay special attention to your personal development and make sure you're focusing on the skills that matter the most to you. * Lean processes -- we try hard to cut meetings and processes to a minimum, to ensure that you’re being productive. And we encourage all interactions to be direct and open, not forcing you to go through any intermediaries to get your work done. * United in diversity -- with people from all over the world, from Tunisia to France, from India to the Poland, we are multicultural by default and proud to be so. We all come from different walks of life and cultural backgrounds, and we continue to push for diversity in our team! * We're building a team, not just making money -- we solve hard problems together but we also relax and have fun. From team cooking to going on company trips, from office parties to go-karting, we'll make sure you have a good work-life balance. * The future will be amazing -- the list of non-trivial challenges we'll be dealing with includes developer APIs, security issues, scaling access to a lot of data (among other things we can't tell you about :-) ); all of this with location and anonymity as their own dimensions in Jodel. * No one else is doing what we're doing -- it's that simple. We're pioneering local communication and since communication is a basic human need, our work is super exciting. On top of that, we are one of the few large scale European Social Networks. There’s not that many and we're very proud to be "Made in Europe".

Job Description

Our mission is to help software teams get more done. Over the past decade there has been an explosion of specialized tooling in the enterprise. It’s putting the burden on each of us to jump between different apps and tabs to get our work done and at the end of the day we’re wasting valuable time. We believe there is a better way. Our ambition is bold: build the best platform for software teams to get their work done.

We’re just getting started and are looking to grow the team to help us accomplish our mission. We love what we do and are motivated by working on a product that we enjoy using ourselves. You would have an immediate impact as a builder and user influencing product. You would join the early team as a founding engineer and have full ownership working closely with our founders. Come join us!

Who we’re looking for We are looking for a full-time backend engineer. Our ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience building event driven micro-services or service oriented architectures and has built most facets, if not all, in a twelve-factor app. Preference is for real experience (2+ years) in our primary language of Golang, but other languages are considered when able to quickly pick up new technologies. Additional experience in integrating with 3rd party systems, event-driven architecture, databases, and cloud services (AWS, GCP, etc) are important.

You will directly influence how and what to build, and must be comfortable collaborating on the architecture, code, product, etc as we have a strong culture of devops as well as being technically curious, thoughtful and purposeful in what we build. We value deploying frequently with well-written, maintainable, instrumented and tested code to a kubernetes cluster.

**Responsibilities: ** * Develop new products and features in a small team * Collaboration with the team to solve technical problems and help shape the product direction * Provide technical input and knowledge to the planning, design, and requirements process for new products and features * Review other software engineers' code for correctness, style, and completeness * Support your team's production software by responding to an occasional alert or bug report * Write integration tests and work with our product team to ensure the operation and correctness of new features

Requirements: * 5+ years of backend engineering in a distributed systems * 2+ years in Golang or 5+ using several languages you were able to quickly pick up * Strong knowledge of a variety of database systems (Graph, relational etc.) * Experience working with 3rd party APIs and OAuth * Comfortable with strong dev ops culture * Strong communication skills in English and experience working as part of a remote team * Need to be located in timezones UTC-4 through UTC-8 (The Americas) * Excited to travel internationally for company retreats (twice a year) * Favorite Ted Lasso quote

Who Are We? We love what we do: designing and building great products. But our work isn't the only thing that defines us. We're not trying to create some semi-cult to get people to work here. We simply enjoy working together and building useful and beautiful software for our customers. We’re a venture-backed, pre-launch startup and are looking for someone who is excited about this stage of building a product and having a real impact on the company’s success.

You would join a group of repeat founders. We have founded and worked at startups that raised a bunch of money from top VCs. While that has its advantages (hire lots of amazing people, spend money on ads and cool perks…) it also puts a company on a very narrow success path. It's very binary, since venture investors have a binary return profile (they succeed if their investments sell for billions). So we decided to do it a little differently this time. Where growth isn't the only goal of a company. Where it's balanced with the goal of being default-alive and capital-efficient which leaves doors open and avoids the trap of forced binary outcomes.

Backend Engineer
Resin
London, United Kingdom / Remote
$53,000 to $58,000 a year
August 2018
5 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old

Job Description

Resin.io provides a software platform that helps developers build, deploy and manage code on connected devices. We brought Docker to embedded GNU/Linux devices in 2013 and have been building our IoT toolkit ever since. We also maintain a variety of successful open source projects including Etcher, Balena, and resinOS, and made contributions to high-exposure projects such as Docker, Electron, and AppImage.

Our technology is open, standards-based, and proven in production across a wide range of scenarios from drones, 3D printers, point-of-sale devices, tidal turbines, skyscrapers and more. Our investors include DFJ, Aspect Ventures, GE, and Ericsson.

Resin is a highly distributed, remote-friendly company with a pretty much flat hierarchy. Our organization is adaptive, getting feedback signals from our users and systems. Right now we organize ourselves by projects, which allow us to build complex features and solve big problems, while staying mutable. As a distributed group, we rely on clear communication and the rule of "assume positive intent" to help us work together across time zones, cultures and first languages. Our base of operations is nominally London, though really we are living all over the world: from Barcelona to Bulgaria, Argentina to Vietnam, and many more.

On being a Backend Engineer at resin.io

We maintain a service infrastructure for IoT devices, and this is where we have quite a bit of our engineering talent. You will be actively working on one or more of these core components, fixing bugs, solving complex technical problems, and implementing user-facing features across the resin.io stack. While resin.io focuses on IoT, the majority of our engineers don't require embedded programming expertise.

People who are successful engineers are well-rounded generalists and great communicators. They are eager to take responsibility for a project, and are able to make good decisions about the project because they have the context of what's important.

We don't require engineers to be already familiar with the technologies we use. We are happy to invest in people that showcase a strong understanding of the challenges of building secure distributed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Actively invest back in our own technology, libraries, and frameworks
  • Understand security best practices and strive to apply them in your work
  • Be highly motivated to produce great code
  • Evaluate customer requirements and other inputs to determine the scope and timing of new functionality
  • Design, architect, and own the execution of your projects
  • Ensure the architecture of our distributed system remains cohesive
  • Collaborate, brainstorm, and coordinate work with other resineers
  • Understand the high-level goals, and thus know how to prioritize your work
  • Challenge orthodoxy when that will help the product evolve
  • Work efficiently with a certain amount of ambiguity in the tasks you're executing

REQUIREMENTS

Need to have:

  • Desire to make yourself and others more effective. You'd be bothered by an inefficient process
  • Good understanding of software engineering practices and how to apply them
  • Excellent written communication skills, and fluency in English
  • Self-discipline to take on a project and push it to completion without too much management. You also know when to ask for help
  • Strong problem-solving abilities. You know how to split a complex problem into incremental pieces
  • Basic front-end development skills

Nice to have:

  • A sample of your work (URL or attached sample)
  • Contributions to OSS projects (please include a URL)
  • Having worked remotely before
  • Experience with Resin.io as a user
  • Experience with embedded GNU/Linux, anything ranging from personal projects with a Raspberry Pi to commercial or industrial scenarios with custom devices
  • Experience with React, Node.js, Docker, PostgreSQL, or Kubernetes
  • Experience with embedded development and microprocessors
  • Experience with the Electron framework and cross-platform development
  • Experience leading software projects in the open source world

Make sure to let us know if any of these items apply to you!

Perks & Benefits

  • Work with an extremely talented, diverse team
  • Equipment of your choice
  • Remote-friendly
  • Flexible working hours
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • Annual company gathering in an international location - this year, Barcelona in October
  • We send you hardware for side projects!

Job Description

Do you self-identify as a great problem solver?

Have you been honing your innovation craft for years yet yearning for more complex challenges?

Does the opportunity to play a key role in the launch of a software platform with massive impact (for millions or even billions of people) excite you?

If you’ve answered with 3 resounding yeses, then we want to meet you!

What We Expect We are a cutting-edge web3 infrastructure scale-up project seeking a few very talented developers who are not just looking for a job but want to be challenged to accomplish great things in an exciting venture.

We are the veterans of many successful startups and will put you on the accelerated learning curve toward your future success.

We are looking for an experienced Lead Golang Engineer who has designed, built, and operated high-throughput, highly resilient distributed data systems. This is a rare opportunity to work with a number of talented innovators on building a protocol that can change the data cloud landscape, e.g. decentralizing big data.

This core systems development position will challenge you to drive the design and development of significant system software components with a highly collaborative, test-driven, and rapid prototyping approach. In addition, you will definitely need to build upon your previous innovation and operational experience with highly scalable distributed systems that provide availability, reliability, and performance guarantees.

About Cere Network Cere Network is the decentralized data protocol powering the future of web3 with trustless content sharing and cloud data interactions between apps, users, AI/ML, and (NFT) assets. Cere is backed by the world’s largest institutions and projects, including Binance Labs, Republic Labs, and Polygon.

Our Ethos We look for a few things across all hires we make at Cere, regardless of role or team: - We seek teammates who will thrive in our fast-paced work environment, where we default to methodical, simulation-driven, fast development iterations and a first-principle thinking mindset. - We crave teammates with high standards and strong discipline, embracing a growth mindset to continuously learn and incrementally improve habits and processes. - We require contributors to have excellent communication skills (esp. written), for everything must be well organized and tracked in Notion, Slack, Wiki’s, etc. We want autonomous, goal-oriented individuals who embrace transparency and accountability. No one wants to micro-manage others. - We need good teammates who are generally cool people who want to be part of a great team & decentralized community where everyone truly helps and challenges each other to learn/grow by innovating together towards greater shared goals. Embracing the building of such a collaborative community is the only way we can sustain rapid innovation (and the only way to live/work, really).

Requirements: - 5+ years of extensive programming experience with Golang. - Deep understanding of system design, data structures, and algorithms. - Experience with concurrency, transactions and parallel execution. - Experience with cryptography (encryption and signatures). - Systematic problem-solving approach coupled with effective communication skills.

Nice to have: - Experience with distributed databases and/or storage systems. - Database engine internals (storage): indexing, access methods, concurrency control, logging, caching, transaction processing, replication, backup restore, and buffer management. - Database engine internals (query processing): query compilation, optimization, execution, parallel execution. - Distributed systems: consensus-based quorum replication, peering networks system implementation.

Tech stack: - Golang - libp2p - BadgerDB - Substrate-based blockchain API - Crypto libraries for asymmetric encryption and signatures

A bit more about our Multinational, High-Performance (and primarily remote) Team Join a highly talented multicultural team that is based all over the world. We have offices in San Francisco, New York, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Berlin, and several locations in Asia. As stated above, we make remote working possible by embracing our ethos, yet many teams also travel to meet in person every 1-2 months. We all want high degrees of autonomy and flexibility to make life and work fun, but transparency, accountability/ownership are the requisites.
