Job Description

HotelTonight makes it remarkably easy to book great hotels at amazing rates on your mobile device for tonight, tomorrow and beyond. Our goal is to be the premier and most loved way to book a place to stay and we’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help do just that.

We’re seeking teammates who want to set the standard, question the status quo, and want to keep learning. Part of the greater Product Development team, the Core Services team focuses on the back-end services and infrastructure that support iOS and Android features of the consumer facing app. We are a team of builders; we like to solve problems, take action, and work collaboratively with others to get stuff done.

This is a great opportunity for an engineer who is passionate about the product, thinks of the users, and wants to utilize the latest technologies to deliver industry-changing products. HotelTonight now allows users to book a hotel up to 100 days in advance - an exciting expansion for many reasons, but it’s also a significant change to our backend infrastructure. This means there are some big, challenging projects ahead for you and the rest of the Platform team to tackle.

You’ll have an immediate impact, ensuring that our APIs, infrastructure, and internal tools create a world class user experience and help HotelTonight on its mission to become the only hotel booking app you need on your phone.

Within 1 month, you will

  • Familiarize yourself with our development workflow, tooling and tech stack
  • Learn about the upcoming initiatives and projects you’ll be owning
  • Release bug fixes and feature improvements to our production environment
  • Actively participate in our code review process

Within 3 months, you will

  • Collaborate with other engineers, product managers, designers, and domain experts to iterate on and improve core business logic and user-facing features
  • Develop, modify, and maintain our e-commerce platform while optimizing for speed, user experience, and continued 99.99% availability
  • Support critical production systems as part of our on-call rotation
  • Leverage instrumentation to identify and diagnose performance bottlenecks
  • Own the delivery and deployment of the services you build into our containerized production cluster

Within 12 months you'll do

  • Lead end-to-end development of mission-critical features
  • Work on managing and scaling the infrastructure that enables our services to process millions of requests per day
  • Evaluate and experiment with new technologies and techniques that can be added to our tech stack to solve the trickiest of problems
  • Work alongside other engineers to define the future of HotelTonight's core services

Why this opportunity is cool

  • You’ll be able to directly contribute to and shape the systems that power HotelTonight’s marketplace
  • You’ll work alongside and be exposed to senior leaders across the company; an opportunity to learn and grow from those around you
  • You’ll work with other teams across the company on a wide range of projects, ranging from end-user-facing features to behind-the-scenes improvements to our bookings, payments, and notifications platforms
  • You’ll help implement and refine best practices for deploying, monitoring, alerting, and performance testing critical services

What you will need to be successful in this role

  • Extensive experience in software development working as a Backend Engineer
  • Strong expertise in Ruby and RSpec (or similar) and an interest in other languages (e.g. Golang, Elixir)
  • Working knowledge of relational databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • Familiarity with any of the following is a plus: AWS, Ansible, Docker, Elasticsearch, Kafka, Packer, RabbitMQ (or other queueing systems), Terraform, Redis
  • Experience scaling and maintaining high-traffic, service-oriented production systems
  • Ability to tackle broad, challenging problems in an analytical, pragmatic way
  • Empathy for users, teammates, and other stakeholders
  • Love working as part of a team and continuously strive for self-improvement

  • An official Best Places to Work (2 years running!)
  • The opportunity to define mobile commerce and change the way people book travel
  • A people-focused organization dedicated to making sure you're challenged, learning, growing, and recognized for all the great work you do
  • The camaraderie of a driven, agile team that is building something disruptive
  • Excellent health, dental, vision and 401k plans, and stock options too

Knoetic Logo
Senior Software Engineer (Full-Stack)
Knoetic
New York City, United States
$140,000 to $190,000 a year
May 2023
6 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old

Job Description

Hello, we’re Knoetic (<-rhymes with “poetic” 😊)!

We've raised over $50MM from Accel, EQT Ventures, Menlo, and 100s of angels (like Adam Grant).

Why did these world-class VCs and angels want in on Knoetic?

Because we’re building a “brain” for Chief People Officers that enables them to build healthy, productive, equitable workforces – and ultimately shapes the future of work.

How does it work?

The “left brain” is Knoetic Analytics – the quantitative insights. We integrate with HR systems (HRIS, recruiting platforms, performance platforms, etc), ingest all that disparate employee data, manipulate it via a complex transform process, and then push insights back to the customer in a user-friendly way. Chief People Officers use Knoetic Analytics to visualize their workforce, prepare for Board meetings, influence their executive team, workforce plan, uncover performance trends, and much more.

The “right brain” is CPOHQ – the qualitative insights. Chief People Officers join our executive community to tap the wisdom of their peers, find best practices, workshop pressing business challenges, and make meaningful connections. The role of the CPO has never been more complex, and CPOHQ is where they turn to inform the decisions that impact their employees.

By bringing Analytics & CPOHQ together, we give CPOs and their People teams a holistic view of what drives employees to come, stay, and feel valued at work. This is a platform unlike any other.

That’s where you come in!

We’re building a diverse team of Knoeticons who can thrive in our culture. If you're motivated to improve the work lives of millions of people as part of an ambitious and collaborative team, we'd love for you to join us on this ride :)

About The Role

We are building out our founding Engineering team. Senior Full-stack Engineers have the opportunity to work across the stack, front to back. You’ll take ideas from inception to reality by rapidly building prototypes, iterating, and releasing them. You’ll build scalable products that make the people analytics experience for People leaders and organizations more insightful and more efficient.

Overall you will:

  • Produce high-quality, production-ready, readable, maintainable code
  • Lead large projects from initial inception to production
  • Collaborate with leadership and with peers across engineering, design, product, and go-to-market
  • Build beautiful, scalable solutions to make the people Analytics experience for CPOs, people leaders, and entire organizations 100x more efficient

Within your first week, you will:

  • Onboard and learn more about the company’s mission, culture, and values. You’ll write a user manual and a Professional Development Plan outlining exactly how you want to grow professionally over the next 1-2 years.
  • Understand Knoetic's tech infrastructure in-depth. We will pair you up with a peer to help you get up to speed.
  • Deploy your first Pull Request to production

Within your first month, you will:

  • Participate in road mapping and architecture discussions
  • Pair program with talented, ambitious engineers within a highly-collaborative team
  • Collaborate with the team which includes our product manager and product designer to deliver a low/medium-sized project

At three months, you'll be fully ramped! You will:

  • Lead a complex project from inception to deployment that will immediately provide value to our users
  • Identify, evaluate, and define improvements to the existing infrastructure and product

What we’re looking for

  • BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • 4+ years of experience building modern web applications using Javascript frameworks like ReactJS or similar, and with backend programming languages like NodeJS, Python, or similar
  • Demonstrated comfort building applications using our backend tech stack (Go, AWS, Kubernetes, SQL, NodeJS)
  • You pride yourself on being able to identify and address issues before they become problems, and are skilled at finding signals in the noise

If this sounds like an amazing opportunity for you, apply now, and let's shape the future of work together!

The key attributes we value in teammates:

  • You like to win. You run through walls to achieve your goals, and you don't settle for participation trophies.
  • You're intellectually curious, and intellectually humble. You approach problems with intellectual rigor, and with an open mind and ear. You’re not afraid to say, “I don’t know - but I’ll figure it out, fast.”
  • You never say, “that’s not my job” - you take full ownership and responsibility over outcomes. You’re a force of nature that gets the job done no matter what it takes.
  • You make everyone else on the team better. Your presence, positivity, and drive inspire others to step up their game. You put the company above your own wants.
  • You’re known for your work ethic. You pride yourself on being one of the hardest-working person most people know.
  • You’re constantly improving. You know there’s no such thing as perfection, and you’re always pushing yourself (and our company) to be better than you were yesterday.
  • You’re confident that you are good, and humble to know you can be better: You’re honest, principled, smart, open to giving/receiving feedback, and focused on doing right for the company and doing right for the customer

  • Our Architecture team has a bunch of experience and is always ready to help.

  • We follow the approach: “You build it, you own it, you love it”.

What keeps us busy at the moment:

  • Restructuring our e-commerce platform to accommodate a marketplace business model - personalizing the platform based on the user behavior.
  • Enhancing the e-commerce platform with new features (data-driven, personalization project).
  • Promoting experimentation mindset in the delivery of the new features.
  • Entering a new phase for our team - onboarding new tenants.

What we can offer:

  • A mature management team that has a clear vision of the company's development and specified goals.
  • Flat hierarchy and a transparent environment where your feedback is always welcome.
  • Guilds where you can improve at what interests you (for example infrastructure guild, code quality guild etc).
  • Room for smart experimentation. We appreciate people bringing new things to the table to get better results together.
  • International crowd (20+ nationalities) with different backgrounds and knowledge to learn from.
  • Home office setup - we will equip your home with what is needed to work comfortably.

Setu Logo
Fullstack Engineer
Setu
Bangalore, India
₹2,000,000 to ₹3,000,000 a year
March 2021
1 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old

Job Description

About Setu

India’s economic infrastructure needs a complete overhaul. Today our digital economy rides on rickety monolithic systems built in the mid-90s. It takes months to do a simple bank integration and launch a fintech product. This inefficiency cannot continue.

If our economy has to grow, we need killer API infrastructure for financial services that rivals the likes of Stripe, and AWS.

At Setu, we are fixing this for good, by abstracting away the complexity of working with legacy financial infrastructure and replacing it with a developer platform that offers clean, high-performance API bundles to embed finance into any application.

So that developers can do what they do best, build amazing products that improve people’s lives.

Importance of the role

This is a mission-critical role. We are a small, diverse, agile and high-performance, engineering team. We’re looking for versatile developers who will:

  1. Be our partners’ first port of call within Setu

  2. Build new products and tools to crunch integration times and time to market

  3. Improve through peer-learning and transmit them to the Setu dev ecosystem

  4. Take ownership and get the job done. We need role shapers, not role takers

Requirements

Who are we looking for? Description of the role

The Full Stack Engineer role involves working across Setu's development stack, including various backend systems, frontend systems as well as quick prototyping of proof-of-concept features and projects.

  • Architecting: Figuring out all levels of designing and structuring systems, deciding on optimal levels of abstraction and future-proofing, patterns of orchestration of components and finally planning its execution.

  • Implementation: Should be able to structure and write code like prose for others to read, design and adhere to common principles and patterns that make everyone better at their jobs. Should have the ability to contribute according to timelines and type of projects - from working POCs to stable production code and the ability to work with a large breadth of knowledge.

  • Orchestration and integration: Interact with the larger engineering team for integrating your work into the ecosystem, help others in building over the base that you provide, help in orchestrating your work into CI/CD, testing, QA and automation pipelines.

  • Mentorship: We all love to learn and grow as engineers and human beings and we believe in synchronous growth as a team fueled by each and every individual's personal abilities, specializations, and interests. To enable this you'll be required to mentor others by sharing your expertise in various forms and be subject to be mentored by others and thus maintain a continuous learning culture.

  • Ownership: End-to-end ownership of services and specialized components required for various projects - starting from prototypal stage to production-hardened. These may include anything from document parsing to solving problems using deep learning.

  • Documentation: Create advanced technical content including articles, samples, whitepapers, and training.

Tech stack

Backend: Python3, Golang, Flask, OpenAPI

Frontend: Typescript, React

Infrastructure: AWS, Terraform

Benefits

Why Setu?

We will spare no efforts to ensure that Setu empowers you to do the most important and impactful work of your career

  • Opportunity to work closely with the founding team who built and scaled public infrastructure such as UPI, GST, Aadhaar, etc.

  • We care deeply about your development. So we work hard to provide you with:

  • Exposure to other verticals such as product, business, developer experience

  • A fully stocked library and unlimited book budget

  • Tickets to conferences and industry events

  • Weekly learning sessions on Friday where we invite both team members and external experts to teach you something new

  • Attractive compensation. We don’t want money to ever be a worry. So you can focus on doing your best work.

  • Kick-ass benefits including comprehensive health insurance for you and your family, extraordinary coffee, and a beautiful office with lots of solid wood and natural light

Join us if you want to be part of a company that’s building infrastructure that will directly impact financial inclusion and improve millions of lives. No cashbacks, no growth-hacks, no bullshit. Just an audacious mission, and an obsession with craftsmanship in code.

Golang Engineer
Lightmeter
Berlin, Germany
$40,000 to $50,000 a year

Job Description

Please note: this position is full time and in Berlin (you need to already be in Berlin too). We don't use agencies.

Most messaging networks are created to serve their creators. Email is designed to serve humankind. For over 50 years inspired technicians have architected email to provide the greatest good to the greatest number. Their openness and design principles made email the world's #1 communication channel and identity provider with 4.2 billion users (2x Facebook). Email is a critical foundation stone of the Web.

Lightmeter is reinventing email infrastructure to overcome threats from centralised tech oligharchs like Microsoft and Google. An epic platform war is behind fought behind the scenes to wrestle control over digital comms and incorporate it into closed service platforms, where the customer is a product to be sold to the highest bidder.

We are 3 years of research and 1 year of development in to building Lightmeter Control Center - the all-in-one mailops management system repeatedly featured in Heise and ZDnet. It's fully Open Source (on GitLab) -- feel free to check the unit and user acceptance test code coverage : ) . Our engineering team has a background in embedded and fintech, with a focus on performance and feedback.

A mix of public and private funding fuels our work, and we've been recognised by the European Commission as part of 'Next Generation Internet'. We have hundreds of active users, a few of whom we interview each week, including banks, public universities, Internet Service Providers, and marketing agencies.

Our mission is to strengthen the foundations of digital society by making mailtech easy and convenient.

That’s a brief intro to what you’ll be working on. But first, you need to know if you’ll even like working with us. Let’s talk about life at Lightmeter and then we’ll go into detail about what we’re looking for.

Who you’ll be working with

One luxuary of being an early-stage team is that you get to work directly with everyone. That said, you'll be reporting to Sam, our CEO. He gets easily excited about engineering patterns and workflows, and likes bright colours and house music with vocals.

You'd work along-side Lead Developer Leandro, who calls himself a Software Craftsman, and who others call a philosopher. Leandro has deeply held unfashionable beliefs like "all code should be fast and light", and cares more about design patterns than what language he's coding in. He love the outdoors and pines for the mountains.

Suela is our Product Manager and x-ray seer of quality and value. She has a nack of turning our telescopes around, pointing out better perspectives, opportunities, and efficiencies. She's an Open Source fangirl, community organiser of the OpenLabs Hackerspace, and secretly learning Python so she can make bots to replace herself. Just kidding!

How You’ll Work at Lightmeter

We work hard to make working here a great experience, and have a team of truly exceptional people — the kind you’ll be excited to work with. You'll get to design and create new components and services, working on features like those on our roadmap (https://lightmeter.io/roadmap).

Here’s how we operate

No Crazy Hours
You'll very rarely work more than 40 hours per week, unless you really want to. Ocassionally things can heat up, but noones going to force you to work more than is comfortable. When you do work overtime you balance it out with time off afterwards. We work hard and smart, planning carefully, but we’re in this for the long haul: sustainability trumps anything short term.

Face time and alone time
Most of us have worked fully remote before and miss the benefits of face time, so we like to work together a lot of the time. However focused time alone, in cafes or home-office is nice too, so we aim for a good mix. So long as you can reach the people you need, when you need them, and vice versa, your preferences for office vs remote work shouldn't be an issue.

Take Vacation
A small team means it's easy to coordinate time off to relax and recharge. Notice you'll be away a week in advance is usually enough.

Up Your Game
We’re serious about helping you improve your craft. Everyone wins when you get better and your job, and enjoy the process. Think conferences, online courses and subscriptions, dedicated time away from work to learn something new.

Compensation and Legal
We can't currently offer you a salary to compete with Amazon or Microsoft. What we can offer you is the same salary that we are paying ourselves: €50,000 / year.

We’re an early-stage startup, funded, pre-revenue, and growing. We are owned and managed by our Founders. Making sustainable, profitable products with a committment to openness is hard; we're demonstrating how it's done. If you care deeply about digital freedom, empowerment, and collaboration, you'll probably fit right in!

What we're looking for

Lightmeter has ambitious goals and our team is growing to meet them. You're the Software Engineer we're looking for if you're collaborative, mission-motivated, creative, disciplined, and productive. (So far, so good?)

You love solving complex problems — both internally and for your users — and know what it means to build a mature, evolving product. You are more focused on the outcome than on the output of your work, and prefer to deliver something useful sooner, rather than something perfect later. You welcome feedback, and are curious about users' challenges and how to address them. You demand a lot from your colleagues and expect the same in return, taking personal pride in collective achievement.

Requirements (these are real, actual requirements)

  • You must live in Berlin most of the time, so we can meet up and work together sometimes
  • You must have at least five years working in the software industry, of which at least four are as a software engineer.
  • You must have experience working in cross-functional teams. And we really mean that cross-functional part — in other words working directly with designers, quality assurance, product managers, or other related roles.

Our tech stack (repos: https://gitlab.com/lightmeter)

  • Golang
  • SQLite
  • VueJS
  • A little Python
  • Some big data

Recommended skills

  • Golang
  • Git with large and distributed teams
  • Linux (server and desktop) and tools such as make, SSH and shell scripting

  • Continuous integration / delivery

  • Interest in learning (and teaching!); Rust is welcome
