Based in New York, DigitalOcean is a dynamic, high-growth technology company that serves a robust and passionate community of developers, teams, and businesses around the world. We believe that today’s entrepreneurs are changing the world through software. Our mission is to empower these entrepreneurs by bringing modern app development within reach for any developer, anywhere in the world.

We want people who are passionate about building the systems, culture, and processes that will improve the resiliency, reliability, scaling, and performance for cloud services.

We are looking for an experienced Site Reliability Engineer to work closely with our product engineering and infrastructure teams. Reporting to the Director of Platform Systems, the Site Reliability Engineer will be performing a mix of hands-on development, coaching, and collaborating with other teams and stakeholders to help bring DigitalOcean’s engineering systems and culture up to the next level.

This is a key opportunity to make a significant impact in DigitalOcean’s engineering and operational systems and influence future product designs and requirements. This role is essential to accelerate the improvement of the high expectations our customers have of DigitalOcean as we continue to grow and expand.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Performing hands on technical work to directly improve the reliability, resiliency, and scaling of our key platform systems
  • Working with stakeholders to develop and implement reliability and performance metrics
  • Facilitate DigitalOcean’s culture of learning by providing insight and recommendations for improvement
  • Coaching teams and individuals on reliability best practices and solutions
  • Working with other SREs and engineering leaders to define the architectures and practices that should be adopted in order to deliver on our engineering and operational goals
  • Establishing best practices for development, architecture, deployment, and operations
  • Working with peer SREs to improve services and processes (including architecture reviews, incident response, monitoring) in a cross-functional manner throughout the engineering organization

What We’ll Expect From You:

  • Distinguished track record as SRE (or similar role) with hands-on experience implementing reliability, process, and scaling solutions
  • History of fostering positive relationships with stakeholders and a track record of successful collaboration and coaching
  • Clear communication skills (both written and verbal) to document processes and architectures
  • Experience implementing disaster recovery best practices
  • Developing robust solutions that facilitate streamlined resolution of customer inquiries through use of technologies for automation, deflection, and issue management
  • Adept in Ruby and Go with a broad understanding of the full technology stack for a modern infrastructure
  • Advocate of effective development environments with the use of CI/CD tooling and configuration management technologies such as Chef or Ansible

Why You’ll Like Working for DigitalOcean:

  • We have amazing people. We can promise you will work with some of the smartest and most interesting people in the industry. We work hard but we always have fun doing it. We care deeply about each other and take our “no jerks” rule very seriously.
  • We value development. We are a high-performance organization that is always challenging ourselves to continuously grow. That means we maintain a growth mindset in everything we do and invest deeply in employee development. You’ll need to be great to get hired here and we promise you’ll get even better.
  • We care about you. We offer competitive health, dental, and vision benefits for employees and their dependents, a monthly gym reimbursement to support your physical health, and a monthly commute allowance to make your trips to and from work easier.
  • We invest in your future. We offer competitive compensation and a 401k plan with up to a 4% employer match. We also provide all employees with Kindles and reimbursement for relevant conferences, training, and education.
  • We want you to love where you work. We have great office spaces located in the heart of SoHo NYC and Cambridge and offer daily catered lunches to keep your hunger at bay. We’re also very remote-friendly—we use Slack to communicate across the company—and all remote employees have the opportunity to onboard in-office and take an all-expenses paid trip to our annual company offsite, Shark Week, to get quality in-person time with the team at least once a year. We also allow employees to customize their workstations to meet their needs—whether remote or in office.
  • We value diversity and inclusivity. We are an equal opportunity employer and we do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Job Description

About Fuzzbuzz

We're Fuzzbuzz and we're building a fuzzing as a service platform that integrates into CI systems and the modern software testing workflow. Fuzzing is a type of automated testing that generates and runs thousands of inputs per second on your code to try and find bugs and vulnerabilities. It uses code coverage and other signals from your code to guide the tests it generates and runs. You can read more here.

Last year, we raised a $2.7M seed round from some of the best tech investors & founders, namely Y Combinator, Fuel Capital, Solomon Hykes (Docker founder), Flo Leibert (Mesosphere founder), Spencer Kimball (CockroachDB founder), Michael Stoppelman (Yelp ex-CTO).

About the Team

We're currently a team of 5 people and prefer staying small - allowing us to iterate faster and get very comfortable working with each other (the 3 founders have been roommates since first year university). That means you'll be 16% of the team - all of the work you do will be extremely critical and immediately impact users. We pride ourselves in being a very humble, but capable team - the 2 founding engineers each have 20+ years of engineering experience.

Since we are really small, we prefer having everyone working at the same location. We’re at 541 Jefferson Ave in Redwood City, CA - 10 mins from the Caltrain (everyone's currently WFH because of COVID-19. We will resume working from the office when it is safe).

Why Fuzzbuzz?

1. Define the DevOps and security standards of tomorrow

Fuzzing is seeing more widespread usage than ever before, but there is still work to be done before it sees mass adoption. We're uniquely positioned to bring fuzzing to the developer community and make software testing more effective than ever before.

2. Product-first culture with an emphasis on engineering

Working on a technical product means working with very technical people. We embrace technical challenges and take them head-on. We use tools/frameworks because they get the job done, not because they're the current flavor of the month.

3. Early stage, funded startup

By joining Fuzzbuzz at this critical early stage, as one of our first team members, you'll be shaping not only our product, but our company & engineering culture as well. We're well funded, and pay in the top 10% of companies in SF at our stage.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design, architect and build the Fuzzbuzz platform (frontend & API)
  • Work with our designer to build a beautiful platform with a focus on simplicity
  • Work with fuzzing team to integrate fuzzing tooling into the platform
  • Work with founders to define product roadmap
  • Define internal engineering standards, tooling and processes
  • Work and iterate closely with users

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years experience as a full stack software engineer
  • Solid understanding of Typescript
  • Experience building complex SPAs in Angular or React (using TS)
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Go
  • Experience designing and building APIs
  • Experience working with AWS
  • Familiar with Linux
  • Strong fundamentals in distributed systems design and development
  • Obsession with users and providing real value to customers rather than working with “cool tech”
  • Ability to navigate & take ownership of complex problems from design through to final implementation

Benefits

  • Full health, dental & vision insurance
  • Caltrain & Parking covered
  • Unlimited, guilt-free PTO
  • Flexible hours
  • Ergonomic workstation (standing desk, Herman Miller chairs, custom monitor/laptop set up)

Job Description

Fastly helps people stay better connected with the things they love. Fastly’s edge cloud platform enables customers to create great digital experiences quickly, securely, and reliably by processing, serving, and securing our customers’ applications as close to their end-users as possible — at the edge of the Internet. The platform is designed to take advantage of the modern internet, to be programmable, and to support agile software development. Fastly’s customers include many of the world’s most prominent companies, including Vimeo, Pinterest, The New York Times, and GitHub.

What You'll Do

  • Learn the distsys theory and Go implementation of the project to proficiency, becoming a technical "co-founder" and owner
  • Optimize system performance to meet Fastly's Internet-scale requirements, via testing, profiling, refactoring, and redesigning
  • Collaborate with customer-facing teams to define and implement primitives that will power a huge number of future Fastly products

  • Clear, effective, and empathetic communication skills, both written and verbal, especially when discussing complex technical topics
  • Intermediate+ proficiency with Go (Golang), ideally having built and operated one or more large-scale projects
  • Advanced distributed systems theory experience, especially eventual consistency, and a strong interest in learning more
  • A "systems thinker" who always keeps the big picture in mind, even as they work on the smallest details
  • Effective at asynchronous remote work, with teammates across the world

Why Fastly?

  • We have a huge impact. Fastly is a small company with a big reach. Not only do our customers have a tremendous user base, but we also support a growing number of open source projects and initiatives. Outside of code, employees are encouraged to share causes close to their heart with others so we can help lend a supportive hand.

  • We love distributed teams. Fastly’s home-base is in San Francisco, but we have multiple offices and employees sprinkled around the globe. In fact, 50% of our employees work outside of SF! An international remote culture is in our DNA.

  • We care about you. Fastly works hard to create a positive environment for our employees, and we think your life outside of work is important too. We support our teams with great benefits like up to 20 weeks of paid parental leave, options for free medical/dental/vision plans, and an open vacation program that enables our folks to take the time they need to recharge (some benefits may vary by location).

  • We value diversity. Growing and maintaining our inclusive and diverse team matters to us. We are committed to being a company where our employees feel comfortable bringing their authentic selves to work and have the ability to be successful -- every day.

  • We are passionate. Fastly is chock full of passionate people and we’re not ‘one size fits all’. Fastly employs authors, pilots, skiers, parents (of humans and animals), makeup geeks, coffee connoisseurs, and more. We love employees for who they are and what they are passionate about.

We’re always looking for humble, sharp, and creative folks to join the Fastly team. If you think you might be a fit, please apply!

We value top-notch collaboration and communication skills, both among internal teams and in how we interact with our users.

Engineering at HashiCorp is largely a remote team. While prior experience working remotely isn't required, we are looking for team members who perform well given a high level of independence and autonomy.

About the Role:

On the Consul team, we help organizations automate network configurations, discover services, and enable secure connectivity across any cloud or runtime. The customers and large community of users of our tools are operators, infrastructure engineers, and software developers that encounter novel performance, scaling, and usability challenges that we help them solve.

Consul started as an infrastructure management tool for service discovery and health checking, and has evolved to become a full-featured service mesh. You’ll be an active contributor to the service mesh ecosystem, following new developments in emerging technology and competitive offerings, looking for opportunities for product differentiation, and rethinking product architecture to meet new global scale and organizational demands.

In this role you can expect to:

  • Build and architect distributed systems for service connectivity focusing on AWS ECS and then expanding further to other AWS offerings.
  • Interface directly with internal teams, users and HashiCorp customers, as well as the larger Consul community.
  • Participate in user research studies and discussions with product managers and customers to better understand the network topologies, challenges, and constraints for which operators are trying to solve, and leverage those insights when approaching feature design and implementation.
  • Propose new functionality or substantive changes through written documents in an async process, describing the problem background, proposed implementation and example UX, then iterating on peer feedback collaboratively.
  • Own the full lifecycle of feature development from design through testing and release
  • Program mostly in Golang, learning from and contributing to a team committed to continually improving their skills.
  • Coach and mentor other team members within HashiCorp's engineering teams

You may be a good fit for our team if you have:

  • Familiarity with service-oriented architectures, and ideally have worked on an infrastructure or platform team building internal tooling to deploy, connect and monitor them.
  • Empathy for the people operating, learning, teaching and supporting software you write, and consider their experience when making design decisions and performance, security or complexity tradeoffs.
  • Experience in a lower-level language like Go.
  • Awareness of the broader service mesh ecosystem and an interest in contributing to a full-featured product offering while reducing complexity and barriers to adoption for practitioners.
  • Curiosity for academic computer science research, particularly distributed systems papers such as Raft and Paxos variants, and enjoy learning more about the challenges of consistency at global scale.
  • You have expertise with AWS Cloud runtimes like ECS, Fargate, Lambda.

What is our hiring process like?

The below serves as a basic outline; we may choose to add or remove steps based on the information that we gather during the process.

  • Introductory Call with someone from our recruiting team.
  • First Interview with an Engineering Manager
  • Interview Loop with additional team members, with the following panel:
    • Technical Code Pairing interview
    • Code Review interview
    • Communication and Collaboration interview
    • Systems and architecture interview
  • If applicable, a final conversation with the Engineering Manager for the team you would be joining
  • Offer

We do our best to accommodate your programming language of choice for technical interviews.

About the Application Process:

Please note, as collaboration and communication are a critical aspect of how we work, a cover letter is a great way to provide a sample of how you communicate.

In your cover letter, please describe why you're interested in working at HashiCorp, and what draws you to this role in particular. Specifics of your past experience that are relevant to this role are great to include, too.

HashiCorp embraces diversity and equal opportunity. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. We believe the more inclusive we are, the better our company will be.
