Head Of Engineering Bezos London, United Kingdom / Limited Remote £80,000 to £110,000 a year
April 2020
1 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old
Job Description
Head of Engineering
We are seeking a hands-on Head of Engineering for our well funded e-commerce fulfillment startup
At Bezos, our vision is to Deliver Happiness: For our team, for the end consumers, for our e-commerce sellers as well as our logistics partners.
Exciting times in e-commerce: E-commerce sales in Europe is projected to be £406 billion by 2023, expected to grow 8% per year between 2018-2023. The growth is driven by consumers that increasingly buy more online as well as the emergence of small and medium e-commerce sellers, which have grown at 18% and 28% per year, respectively between 2009-2017. There are 200,000 small and medium e-commerce sellers in the UK alone, selling their products through multiple channels, including marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay, their own websites, and on social media like Facebook and Instagram. Today, these small and medium sellers are ignored by the large incumbent logistics service providers and we are on a mission to change that.
Building a next generation Fulfillment-as-a-Service platform: With this explosive growth in e-commerce, the demand for e-commerce fulfilment and delivery is booming. Bezos is a next generation Fulfillment-as-a-Service (FaaS) platform, that allows small and medium e-commerce sellers to outsource their storage, fulfilment, delivery, and returns and focus on what is more important: growing their businesses. Bezos’ operational model is based on partnering with certified logistics suppliers that will execute the different services on our behalf. We believe there is a massive market opportunity to serve these currently unattended and fast growing small and medium e-commerce sellers. We believe that the e-commerce logistics landscape will give place to significant disruption opportunities, and we are planning on taking a leading role to achieve them.
Two founders with proven track records: The founding team consists of Diego Lijtmaer and Vernon Tjon-Soei-Len, who are two seasoned technology executives with experience in e-commerce, the gig economy and last mile delivery industry. Diego built the business development and logistics functions at Just Eat Plc (food delivery, FTSE 100), founded and ran a hospitality business Bacanal and worked in investment banking at UBS (LinkedIn profile here). Vernon was the Director of Amazon Flex UK (part of Amazon’s Last Mile Product & Technology team) and part of the Senior Leadership Team of Amazon Logistics UK, and prior to that worked at Zipcar, Bain & Company and JPMorgan (LinkedIn profile here).
We are looking for an exceptional technology leader: Someone that gets excited about the adventure of a startup and wants to build a world class billion dollar business. Someone that enjoys transforming industries, that enjoys changing the way businesses and consumers think about delivering and receiving e-commerce orders. Someone that is hands on, solves problems, and gets their hands dirty in the execution. Someone that has a demonstrated track record of building amazing technology and building and leading high performance tech teams.
Key responsibilities:
Build Bezos’ Fulfillment-as-a-Service platform
Lead technology strategy, develop the technical solution, the architecture, the integration with other processes and systems and develop the Artificial Intelligence engine that manages our processes
Own the engineering product roadmap, prioritising development efforts in line with company objectives
Build a world class tech team: Hire, onboard and develop the best talent and cultivate an inspiring team culture with us
Collaborate with sellers, logistics providers and internal teams to fix bugs and improve our products
Part of the executive team, making sure the company’s technology is aligned with the business objectives
Must have requirements:
5 years+ experience of software and technology development, ideally 2 years+ in a startup
Experience in developing technology for e-commerce, logistics, last mile or supply chain
Experience in back-end integrations, APIs and microservices, cloud architecture fundamentals (AWS or Google Cloud), databases
A charismatic technology leader: Experience in hiring, managing and leading engineering teams
A strategic thinker and a doer: the ability to build bridges between strategy and execution and balance short term and long term objectives
A product-focused engineer that is customer-centric
Ability to communicate complex technology solutions to different stakeholders
Passion for delivering results, but also learning from failure
Analytical and data-driven: support decisions with hard facts, data and numbers
Experience and ability to lead agile product engineering in a fast growing start up
Knowledge of existing and emerging technologies: Evaluate multiple technologies and identify those that are the best fit for the business
A positive outlook, boundless energy and thrive on collaboration in agile and startup environments
Good vibes: Fostering team spirit; someone all developers look up to and aspire to work with
Preferred requirements (nice to have):
Understanding of e-commerce platforms (Marketplaces, Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon), logistics systems such as warehouse and inventory management systems
Experience with managing distributed/remote software developers
Experience with node.js or Golang (Go)

Site Reliability Engineer Castor EDC Amsterdam, The Netherlands €60,000 to €80,000 a year
February 2020
2 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old

Job Description
Our true purpose at Castor
Castor is one of the leading platforms for data collection in medical research. We believe standardizing and reusing datasets is key to overcoming the healthcare challenges of the future.
How we operate
Our main Electronic Data Capture (EDC) application runs on a proven stack consisting of Ubuntu, Nginx, PHP and MySQL. For our cloud installations, we orchestrate these setups by using Terraform combined with Ansible for the server configuration management.
Due to the nature of processing medical data, we have clients in different regions across the globe, often with specific regulatory constraints around where and how their research data is stored. To meet these customer demands we combine both traditional as well as cloud-based hosting solutions.
Most of our clients prefer to run in Azure, but we’re using Google Cloud Platform for things like Kubernetes hosting of greenfield projects, blob storage for scalable file upload storage and their Key Management System (KMS) to further secure our data.
For our metrics we’ve begun standardizing on Prometheus and we’re moving towards Loki for log aggregation. We use PagerDuty for alerting, communicate via Slack and host our code on Github.
Why we’re growing our team
With our recent expansion have come new challenges, both in how we organize ourselves and in how we manage and scale our infrastructure in the future.
To further these efforts we have formed a Platform team consisting of SRE and Software Engineering, which we are now looking to grow with the addition of an additional SRE.
Additionally, due to the sensitive nature of medical data, Castor is certified for both ISO/IEC 9001 (quality) and 27001 (Information security). In addition, we have to adhere to a number of other regulations, including Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.
Our goal is to unite these requirements with emerging SRE practices around infrastructure as code and other principles to create a well designed and documented system, while still allowing us to remain flexible to change.
How you will contribute
Our absolute commitment to patient data security and privacy informs our vendor selection with certified datacenter and cloud providers. To achieve real impact in medical research, Castor needs to operate security around the world.
Historically, our production platform has run on top of managed hosting services. This model doesn’t scale well for our global, international footprint, which is why we are currently expanding our in-house knowledge and transitioning to Infrastructure-as-a-Service providers.
As a Site Reliability Engineer, you’ll have the ability to shape our operations and continuously deliver a working product. Working very closely with the development teams, you’ll collaborate in supporting and structuring our efforts around automation, observability and security. With your help we plan to scale the Castor platform to the next level.
Some things we worked on recently
Whilst there are many operational challenges as we continue to grow and scale at Castor, our Platform team has made great improvements to a variety of our systems already. To give you some examples of what we achieved last month:
Migrated our DNS to AWS Route53
Set up automatic documentation pipelines using MkDocs
Moved our CI/CD pipelines from Jenkins to CircleCI
Built a key-service on AWS Lambda to store disk encryption keys off-site for an otherwise region-local setup
Your background
You have helped run web-facing services under production workloads and have experienced the challenges that come with maintaining and scaling these systems. Making and owning decisions about systems architecture together with your team is something you enjoy and feel comfortable with.
Qualities we’re looking for include:
A good grasp on how *NIX systems operate
The ability to evaluate and implement best practices for IT operations
A working knowledge of both cloud-native and traditional systems architecture and the trade-offs between them
Experience with a configuration management framework such as Ansible, Chef, Puppet or SaltStack
The ability and desire to work with a wide range of open source technologies
A strong privacy- and security mindset
Experience with some aspects of Observability and distributed systems: from monitoring, logging and metrics instrumentation to resiliency to failure
A good understanding of how relational databases operate
Experience with at least one programming or scripting language, preferably Python or Go(lang)
Knowledge that a list of skills and requirements doesn’t mean you have to tick every single box to apply ;)
How we say thank you
At Castor we truly live our core values, believing we can achieve anything with a healthy and happy team. With this in mind, we offer the following benefits:
Our own ‘Castor Burrow’ - brand new offices by Amsterdam Amstelstation
A competitive salary plus an annual company bonus plan
Employee Stock Option Programme incentive
30 days annual leave plus 6 public holidays
An individual training and professional development budget
Flexible working with the opportunity to work from home 1 day per week
Meditation room with daily yoga, mindfulness and company subscription to Calm

Job Description
cancer.eliminate() // save lives
"The best minds of my generation are thinking about how to make people click ads … That sucks."
-Jeff Hammerbacher
Cancer sucks. But, code is powerful, developers are brilliant, and people are resilient.
In the high cost world of oncology, trial and error treatment is still the norm despite enormous advances in genomic medicine. Patients are given one-size-fits-all treatments that lead to poor outcomes.
CancerIQ is building intelligent analytical technologies aimed to optimize cancer risk prediction, prevention, and treatment. We do this by providing care providers with workflow tools built upon informed decision engines and data-driven classification models. Our mission strives to engage and educate patients, and guide them through the complex, convoluted, and intimidating journey of cancer prevention.
How do you fit in?
CancerIQ Engineering is looking for curious minds that want to solve problems, write elegant code, and iterate quickly. We are a group of ambitious devs who love all things science, web, and technology.
As a CancerIQ Software Engineer, you will to take part in an agile engineering process. You will architect and implement backend and frontend solutions using Javascript, Ruby, Golang, Rust, Elixir, and other technologies best-suited for the goals of the CancerIQ platform. You'll research, design, and propose architectural initiatives that incorporate domain-driven design into the microservices environment, employing sound data validation, provenance, and communication using technologies such as Kubernetes, GraphQL, and Kafka. You’ll be developing robust, performant services and user-friendly web clients that can enable clinicians to operate efficiently and gain new insights. Through intuitive visuals and interfaces, you will be creating modern and appealing applications across multiple platforms for patients of all types and demographics.
We want you to lead new efforts, promote best practices, and help the rest of the team grow in their engineering abilities through mentorship and teaching. We love pairing and so should you.
What are we looking for?
You should have several years of experience and completed many projects that have enabled you to develop strong opinions on code structure and modularization. With the rapid movement in the web landscape, you shouldn’t be afraid to dive into new technologies and learn from top to bottom.
We use a mixture of technologies, and focus on those that help us get jobs done most efficiently. Knowledge of Javascript frameworks such as Angular, React, Backbone, and the like, should be something you can bring. You should have an expert-level understanding of Javascript (e.g. prototype-based inheritance, event delegation, closures, callbacks). You need thorough knowledge of the newer frameworks, and the progression of web technologies such as ES6/7, Typescript, etc.
You should have deep knowledge of the surrounding parts of the stack with the capability of designing RESTful APIs and backend services. As we scale to reach many patients and institutions, you’d make implementation decisions around scalability, performance, and web page optimization techniques.
The desire to learn and help others are two core values that drive us as a development team. We believe that if you aren’t passionate about these values, then we’re not your best fit. You should be passionate about always learning and growing, as well as spreading new knowledge to just as passionate team members. As such, you’re a clear communicator and should be able to work with team members effectively.
What are the “Nice To Haves”?
Being able to navigate and contribute to the full stack will ultimately prove to be beneficial to the team. Knowledge of server-side technologies such as Ruby, Python, Java, Go, etc., would be excellent.
We employ a rapid, continuous deployment system, and as developers are responsible for seeing their features through deployment. Knowledge of DevOps and infrastructure tools (GitLab, Docker, Kubernetes, Istio, Kafka) will prove to be beneficial.

Strong communications skills such as empathy, listening, and conflict resolution
Passion
A good sense of humor
