About your role and the team:

As part of our data pipeline team, you will be working on code that allows the Exponea application to reliably ingest large amounts of data as quickly as possible. Your primary focus will be to keep the pipeline stable, to ensure it can be easily scaled out on demand and to provide just enough visibility to all processing stages. Your daily routine may include:

  • Maintaining and rewriting components of our pipeline to be more robust and scalable
  • Monitoring and increasing the pipeline throughput
  • Decomposing existing monolithic app into set of microservices
  • Introducing Quality of Service guarantees
  • Every third week 24/7 on duty service

What we expect of the candidate:

  • Ability to write clean and concise code in Python and eagerness to learn more (medior / senior experience)
  • Experience with developing complex distributed software systems with production quality deployment, monitoring and reliability
  • Familiarity with large-scale distributed storage and database systems (SQL or NoSQL, e.g. Postgres, MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch)
  • Solid grasp on good software engineering practices such as code reviews, deep focus on quality and documentation
  • Ability and willingness to deep dive into and comprehend large codebases
  • Ability and willingness to troubleshoot and debug technical issues inside a deep and complex technical stack

Requirements

Who are we looking for? Description of the role

The Full Stack Engineer role involves working across Setu's development stack, including various backend systems, frontend systems as well as quick prototyping of proof-of-concept features and projects.

  • Architecting: Figuring out all levels of designing and structuring systems, deciding on optimal levels of abstraction and future-proofing, patterns of orchestration of components and finally planning its execution.

  • Implementation: Should be able to structure and write code like prose for others to read, design and adhere to common principles and patterns that make everyone better at their jobs. Should have the ability to contribute according to timelines and type of projects - from working POCs to stable production code and the ability to work with a large breadth of knowledge.

  • Orchestration and integration: Interact with the larger engineering team for integrating your work into the ecosystem, help others in building over the base that you provide, help in orchestrating your work into CI/CD, testing, QA and automation pipelines.

  • Mentorship: We all love to learn and grow as engineers and human beings and we believe in synchronous growth as a team fueled by each and every individual's personal abilities, specializations, and interests. To enable this you'll be required to mentor others by sharing your expertise in various forms and be subject to be mentored by others and thus maintain a continuous learning culture.

  • Ownership: End-to-end ownership of services and specialized components required for various projects - starting from prototypal stage to production-hardened. These may include anything from document parsing to solving problems using deep learning.

  • Documentation: Create advanced technical content including articles, samples, whitepapers, and training.

OUR TECH STACK

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

  • You have a math or computer science background. No diplomas needed, but knowing your graphs and big-Os is a must.
  • You know your way around web services. Parlez-vous HTTP? Veux-tu un cookie?
  • You know well at least TWO of: Golang, Python, C++, Java/C#, Typescript.
  • You are familiar with modern build systems (especially code generation), Unix-based operating systems, Docker/Kubernetes and cloud services.
  • You are a self-learner. You can analyze the code and documentation yourself, and you can ask questions when needed. Our team is small and focused, and we do not have spare time for thorough tutoring :(
  • You are passionate about quality and reliability. This is not a social media app startup, we deal with big money and strict regulations.

cert-manager is an open source project led by Jetstack that is widely used to provision X.509 certificates to Kubernetes clusters. We are looking to hire a software engineer to join the team behind cert-manager. We are 3 years of research and 1 year of development in to building Lightmeter Control Center - the all-in-one mailops management system repeatedly featured in Heise and ZDnet. She's an Open Source fangirl, community organiser of the OpenLabs Hackerspace, and secretly learning Python so she can make bots to replace herself. Just kidding!

Here’s how we operate

No Crazy Hours
You'll very rarely work more than 40 hours per week, unless you really want to. Ocassionally things can heat up, but noones going to force you to work more than is comfortable. When you do work overtime you balance it out with time off afterwards. We work hard and smart, planning carefully, but we’re in this for the long haul: sustainability trumps anything short term.

Face time and alone time
Most of us have worked fully remote before and miss the benefits of face time, so we like to work together a lot of the time. However focused time alone, in cafes or home-office is nice too, so we aim for a good mix. So long as you can reach the people you need, when you need them, and vice versa, your preferences for office vs remote work shouldn't be an issue.

Requirements (these are real, actual requirements)

  • You must live in Berlin most of the time, so we can meet up and work together sometimes
  • You must have at least five years working in the software industry, of which at least four are as a software engineer.
  • You must have experience working in cross-functional teams. And we really mean that cross-functional part — in other words working directly with designers, quality assurance, product managers, or other related roles.

Your Mission👨‍🚀👩‍🚀

You’ll be writing and contributing to microservices mainly written in Go and hosted in a containerised environment. Your time will be split between building APIs using a mix of HTTP and gRPC, monitoring daemons, creating data parsers and so much more. If building a secure database storage engine or high performance APIs sounds like the kind of challenge you’d enjoy then we’d love for you to get in touch.

What impact will you make

  • You'll chiefly be using Go in our various backend and data engineering projects, with some of our services and tooling also being written in PHP and Python
  • Using a range of different data stores across our teams including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, HDFS
  • You'll be working with RabbitMQ for queues
  • If you’re interested in picking up one of our languages, a new technology or skill we provide lots of opportunities to learn with a mentoring programme, R&D days and regular training available. We like to help people grow and learn!

A bit about you

  • Proven experience with Go; and a great foundation with another programming language (e.g. Java, C, C++, Ruby, PHP or Python)
  • You are a well-rounded, inquisitive engineer who enjoys solving complex problems using clean, efficient and creative methods and putting those solutions into action working in a team
  • Comfortable working with SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Experience with automated testing of systems and applications

Taking it to the next level

  • Experience interacting with or building APIs
  • You think always about solutions from a security perspective or enjoy working with cryptography libraries
  • Previous experience in banking or fintech companies
  • A good understanding of application, information and infrastructure architectures, such as API / SDK development and integrations
  • Awesome analytical and communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas to non-experts with eloquence and confidence
  • Experience with Docker and/or Kubernetes
  • Experience working in a cloud environment such as Google Cloud Platform or AWS

What is the role paying?

Based on our extensive benchmarking we have budgeted at £55,000-£75,000 per annum + 5% options on equity which vests over 3 years, with a 1 year cliff.

At Geckoboard, we’re working to help teams achieve their goals by enabling a fresh way of working. This revolves around making sure that important data gets seen and acted upon. That’s where our dashboards come in. Geckoboard is straightforward dashboard software that makes it quick and easy to surface live business data, metrics and KPIs for teams.

Our engineering culture

We're all here to build something great. You'll be joining a growing team of empowered engineers in a supportive environment that values experimentation, work-life balance and personal development. We've built a culture of knowledge sharing and feedback, so you'll be involved in planning and prioritisation of work as well as peer reviews and pair programming.

Learning is also a big part of our engineering culture. About once every fortnight you're able to take a whole day — an Innovation Day — to work on projects that interest you, learn new skills or contribute to open source… whatever it may be! We encourage these projects and often they have led to improvements in the way we work or concepts that have then been prioritised, developed further and added to our Product.

We work in small and focused cross-functional teams, usually made up of a Product Manager, a Designer, and a mix of Frontend and Backend Engineers. QA and Infrastructure tend to come in at the points they're needed or for specific projects. We scope out our project such that we're able to deliver meaningful work but small enough to iterate and take on board feedback quickly. We encourage our engineers to get involved in different teams and projects based on their interests, skills and opportunities to learn. We're also equally mindful about technical debt and make sure we dedicate time to addressing it.

**Product
**Our product teams each own a different part of the product, building features that improve Geckoboard for our customers. Some of our recent work has ranged from a new send-to-Slack feature, SSO and in the team you’ll be joining initially, we’ve been building a brand new internal framework for importing, storing, and analysing data from third-party APIs we integrate with. We know that investing in our Data Platform is the best way we can deliver flexible, high-quality integrations quickly and easily. The new framework takes care of managing and scheduling imports, responding to webhooks, receiving analytics queries, migrating data from one version to the next and allows us to build internal gRPC services using a common protobuf interface upon it.

**Platform
**We believe that we can only be successful as an Engineering team if we are constantly and systematically investing in our tooling, our common systems, and our developer experience, this is where our Platform team comes in. Our recent work has ranged from rapid response work to improving test and trace coverage, migrating existing services to Go modules and support for other teams. We're also working on enabling older RESTful services to be migrated onto gRPC with a GraphQL API gateway in front.

Work where you work best:

While most of our team are normally based in our leafy East London office, a lot of us work remotely at least a day or two during the week. This means we’ve always been intentional about making sure our ways-of-working are remote-friendly so we can support that flexibility for everyone. We also have fully remote team members, though the expectation is that you’re comfortable with a visit to the London office about once a quarter (except during pandemics).

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, our office remains closed and everyone on the team is working from home presently. We’re likely to continue working from home over the Winter. We keep a close eye on the government guidance, regularly update the team, and plan to open our office only when it’s safe to do so again.

Some of our team have shorter working weeks and we’re more than happy to try to accommodate this or another arrangement whenever possible. Just let us know what works best for you or that you’d like to chat about it in your application.

Logistics:

At this time, we’re only considering candidates who are (or will be) based in the United Kingdom (regardless of whether you’re onsite when out offices reopen or fully remote). Unfortunately, we’re unable to provide sponsorship for this role.
