Platform Engineer Popsa London, United Kingdom £50,000 to £70,000 a year
July 2019
1 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old
Job Description
Popsa is a design-led, engineering focussed company that uses machine learning to help people rediscover their best experiences and turn them into beautiful printed products.
We grew about 500% in 2018 and we’re now shipping over half a million photos a week to 50 countries around the world.
This position is a great opportunity for experienced software engineers with a background in the likes of Go, Python, PHP or Node.js looking to apply their existing skillset and learn and use Go in a production environment.
Our Platform Technology Stack
Most of our backend code is written in Go with some Python and Node.js used where they're the right tool for the job.
We’re entirely hosted on AWS and make extensive use of many of their services (over 30 at last count!)
15+ containerised microservices running in ECS (we’re open to exploring moving to Kubernetes in the future if appropriate). Our services talk protocol buffers over HTTP and are discovered with Consul.
Dozens of event driven serverless functions running on Lambda, some running as APIs behind API Gateway and others as Step Functions
Dockerised batch compute workflows
NoSQL databases (predominantly DynamoDB and ElasticSearch)
Serverless analytics data lake backed by S3 using Athena (PrestoDB)
Terraform and Serverless Framework to manage our infrastructure as code
Read more about our platform technology stack here.
Some other blog posts you might find interesting too:
This is a central role and the work you’ll be doing will touch every aspect of the business. The Popsa platform doesn’t just power our mobile apps, but numerous internal business applications and custom integrations with our industrial print partners (some of this runs on a fleet of Raspberry PIs!), as well as a burgeoning data platform which will feed further into our growth strategies.
Our Head of Engineering Alex likes to describe our platform as an iceberg - the bit customers encounter is just the tip above the water - underneath is a dynamic event-driven structure that enables us to be a lean business that can iterate and experiment rapidly.
You will gain a unique perspective of a high growth business and have an opportunity to shape the landscape of our backend APIs, data pipelines and strategies, infrastructure automation and many more engineering goals.
You Should Apply If
You're impact driven and eager to have a real positive impact on the company, product, users and very importantly your colleagues as well
You have a self-starter mindset; you proactively identify issues and opportunities and tackle them without being told to do so
You’re keen to learn more about and play around with new technologies
What we’re doing here at Popsa excites you!
Desired skill set:
Strong competency with a language such as Go or Python; the majority of the Platform backend is written in Go, but we’re flexible and you'll have the opportunity to learn on the job as well as making use of your existing skillset.
You structure code for scalability, performance and testing
Experience writing and consuming RESTful and RPC APIs; you'll be designing and building new APIs for our mobile and web clients and integrating with new partners and suppliers
You know and appreciate automated testing
Experience with Linux-based operating systems
Experience with container technologies
Production database experience, bonus points for experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases
Bonus:
Experience of continuous integration and continuous deployment
Experience with AWS services such as EC2, ECS, DynamoDB, S3, SNS, SQS and Lambda, as well as tools such as Terraform and Serverless
Experience designing, building and managing distributed event-driven * services
Knowledge or experience of data engineering; tooling, processes, architectures, libraries

Senior Software Engineer Level Remote $120,000 to $120,000 a year
February 2023
1 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old
Job Description
Level is building a modern remote monitoring and management solution. We are a small, well-funded, team that recently launched our product. We are searching for a strong, multi-talented individual contributor who is comfortable with systems-level programming and networking and can contribute to our agent, written in Go.
Must-Haves
Deep knowledge of a systems language like C, Rust, or Go.
Not afraid to dig into an RFC. Low-level internals excites you, rather than scare you away.
Experience with system-level APIs in Windows (win32), macOS, and/or Linux.
Excellent written communicator.
Willing to learn and work with Go.
Nice-to-Haves
You are comfortable using GCC and find yourself at home going through a C codebase.
Familiarity with RPC and common methods of IPC such as sockets and named pipes.
Video encoding experience. You have worked with VP8 and understand the spec.
Building cross-platform libraries, our Go agent compiles to Windows, Darwin, and Linux on a variety of architectures.
Things you might work on
Building a cross-platform application management system to give users the ability to automatically install and update apps.
Working with VP8 to reduce the latency and bandwidth when streaming a device.
Creating a native GUI for the agent.
Adding a proxy to the agent that enables remote access to routers and switches.
Implementing Trickle ICE to improve WebRTC connection times.
Why you might want to work with us
We are a small, fully remote engineering team, and there are no layers of bureaucracy. You can have a huge impact here.
We are very flexible with working hours, we don't expect you to work a consistent block of time, and we trust you to get your work done.
We launched within the last year and are starting to grow.
Why you might not want to work with us
We are an early-stage startup, and while we are well funded, we are careful with our runway and haven't splurged on extra perks like gym memberships or 401k matching.
You want to work with a large team. We believe that small teams are better and do not intend to hire more until it is painful enough to warrant doing so.
More About Us
We are a small, close-knit team working to upend the RMM market with our new product. We have recently launched and have acquired our first hundred customers. Though we are a startup, our investors have given us a multi-year runway.
Our agent team is small, with just two developers. This hire should be an experienced self-starter that can make an impact on our product development. We aren't interested in someone that just wants to work down a list of pre-defined tasks. Our ideal candidate loves working on products and will help shape the direction of ours. We're going to be improving this product for years and want someone to come on this journey with us.
We really like the Basecamp philosophy and try to make sure that it doesn’t have to be crazy at work. We won’t ask that you work weekends, or late into the night. We don’t mind if you need to leave for an appointment in the middle of the day. We understand that software development doesn’t happen for 8 hours straight and don’t worry about counting time in the chair. We trust that given a fair timeline with a scope that you help us determine you will be able to deliver features. We are concerned with the end goal, not micromanaging you on the way there.
Collaboration and communication are a critical aspect of how we work, a cover letter is a great way to provide a sample of how you communicate.
In your cover letter, please describe why you’re interested in working at Level, and what draws you to this role in particular. Specifics of your past experience that are relevant to this role are great to include, too.
