About the interview

  • 15-minute call w/ Cory (CEO)

Our goal is for you to be the expert on the call and to see what it's like to work with you as the new employee:

  • Pick an issue on an open-source project in Golang that you think will take an hour or more.
  • Don't overthink picking the issue!
  • Feel free to familiarize yourself with the codebase, the issue history, the test suite - whatever you think you need to be the 'expert' during the interview. Don't share the issue with us.
  • At interview time, you are in the driver seat, you are the expert. Our goal is to see what it's like to work with you on our first day.
  • Please don't actually start work on the issue until the interview.

About Massdriver

Massdriver is changing the way software engineers provision, secure, and observe cloud infrastructure.

We aim to provide all of the benefits of infrastructure-as-code including parity, reproducibility, and auditability in a simple to use diagramming platform. Backend Software Engineer
HousingAnywhere
Rotterdam, Netherlands
€45,000 to €65,000 a year
October 2019

Job Description

Our Vision 🌏🏡

To help people with housing, anywhere.

Our Mission 💻✨

Building a safe, efficient and global rental marketplace for anyone looking for or renting out a place.

Our Core Values 💛

We Care. We Perform. We Evolve.

Your Impact 💥

As we have reached the scaleup phase at HousingAnywhere, our rapid growth has brought on new challenges. We are rethinking the platform architecture to meet imminent growth needs. You will have the opportunities to bring in your ideas in the context of microservices, stream processing, API, security and data integrity.

At platform we are shaping the vision for the future architecture of HousingAnywhere. You will help other teams to build new features on top of our architecture, and make sure that concerns like reliability, security, privacy and performances are met.

We are pragmatic developers, and often we need to think out of the box to solve tricky technical challenges. Technology hypes inspire our work and give us ideas, but we realize that the context in which we build our solutions is what matters most. You will help us consider the challenges we face when adopting new technologies or techniques.

You will help your colleagues and your leaders to solve problems and move faster, as well as they will do with you.

Our mission as the platform team

As a Software Engineer for the Platform Team, you will be joining the team responsible for the backend logic of HousingAnywhere’s marketplace, and for standardizing the way our partners integrate with our platform.

Our team is here to provide HousingAnywhere with a scalable composable architecture that allows the organization to scale the business and teams on top of it.

We achieve our goals by:

  • developing the technical vision and standards on the platform that accommodate the needs of the housing rental market for the next 10 years
  • developing the standards for the exchange of information between systems in the accommodation rental market.

Let's work together on the following

  • We are currently refactoring the monolith in context boundaries using Domain Driven Design techniques. Our goal is to come to an architecture that will allow us to break the monolith in microservices and break dependencies with the database.
  • We are working on bootstrapping our journey to let partners integrate with our platform. We are defining and implementing the architecture that can integrate seamlessly the variegated technologies the industry uses.
  • We are rethinking our approach to CI, and simplifying our suites of tests.
  • We already extracted frontend as a service from the backend monolith, but the code still leaves in one repository. We want to gain independence by extracting backend code from frontend code and have separate deployment pipelines.
  • We are working closely with the operations team to move our services to kubernetes. We are currently sending a small percentage of traffic to the cluster and are facing some performance issues. We are investigating possible next moves to fully work on the cluster.
  • We are creating an internal RFC to plan how to move towards an event driven architecture by introducing Kafka. We are researching impacts, costs and value that we get by getting into such a path.

And our stack?

  • Go
  • Postgres
  • Redis
  • NSQ
  • Docker
  • Kubernetes
  • Github
  • Google Cloud Platform
  • GRPC/Protobuf

Who you are

  • A product-oriented person: you love developing products that help people and you’re driven by the impact you can make.
  • A problem solver: you structure your thoughts and you propose your ideas towards solving a problem or creating an opportunity.
  • An advocate of clean, simple and pragmatic solutions. You always have intention, adaptability and scalability in mind.
  • A real team player: You respect the work of all your colleagues no matter their seniority level. You also understand that making mistakes is part of the job and that the important thing is to learn from these mistakes. You are always keen to help others, but you are also not afraid of asking for help yourself.
  • A great communicator. We don’t expect you to be a master story teller(although we do love stories), but we expect you to communicate your expectations clearly with all your stakeholders.
  • A tech junkie! You are interested in new technologies and you constantly seek to improve personally, whether that is at work or in your spare time.

What we offer:

🚀Get ready to make a real impact and hit the ground running with early responsibilities. You have the opportunity to take full ownership of your work and dare to do things differently. Here, all ideas matter.

👩🏻👨🏾👦🏼👽 Work with a crazy unconventional team! Think 90 people from 30 different nationalities. It’s like being on a round-the-world trip while you’re in the office.

📈 Trainings, workshops, conferences, books. It’s up to you.

📚 Budget for Dutch or English classes to help you kick off your stay in the Netherlands, and help you immerse into the Dutch culture.

🌇 Work in the heart of Rotterdam in an office with an amazing view! If you're looking for a city that is always packed with new things to discover, amazing architecture, a strong international community, this is the perfect place for you!

👕We don’t care about what you wear. You’re welcome to wear a 3-piece tuxedo or even a dragon onesie, we won’t judge you. Maybe a little.

🍻 Beers & Cheers! Get to know your colleagues over drinks while we celebrate our achievements every Friday.

Software Engineer
BlueLabs
Europe (Remote)
€58,000 to €76,000 a year
April 2021
1 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old
This job posting is no longer available

Job Description

At BlueLabs we are building a next-generation sports betting platform focused on performance, reliability, modularity and automation. After a period of experimentation, we are now excited to see our technology powering the launch of BetFox, a new B2C operator in Ghana.

To ensure the continuous enhancement of our platform while scaling up operations and entering additional African countries, we are now looking to growing our team. As a result, two of our teams (i.e. Betting and Account) are now on the lookout for seasoned Software Engineers who want to join our distributed team and help us execute our vision.

The Team

The Account Team is responsible for the development and daily operations of the core services powering business-critical functions such as player account management and wallets. Other focus areas include, but are not limited to: responsible gaming, integration with third-party payment providers, integration with Mobile Network Operators, and player acquisition and retention programs with a focus on personalisation and automation.

The Betting Team is responsible for designing, developing, and operating all services relating to the lifecycle of bets in our sports betting platform. This stretches from bet placement to bet settlement, including advanced features such as an event- and player-based risk management, ability to build complex bets such as from outcomes with dependent probabilities, or continuous calculation of early settlement offers (cash out).

The services built by our teams are to be concurrently used by thousands of users and are expected to be able to handle hundreds of thousands of daily transactions in a timely manner.

Sub-second latency is welcomed but high throughput has higher priority in the Betting domain. The goal is building a sports betting platform where no bet is rejected due to lack of capacity in the system. Bet settlement is worth a special mention as the platform needs to be able to quickly evaluate hundreds of thousands of bets upon the resulting of an underlying sporting event.

Raw performance isn't everything. The team must also ensure that the platform can be easily adapted to be compliant with the different and ever-changing regulatory demands our industry is facing all over the world. The ultimate goal being to ensure a fair and safe sports betting experience to all our players.

We are building a microservice architecture based on event sourcing using Pulsar. Our services are written in Golang and use PostgreSQL as an operational database. We use SemaphoreCI to deploy our services to a GKE cluster, which is provisioned using Terraform.

A good candidate should have high standards for himself, a desire to build high-quality, well-tested, production-ready solutions and constantly improve his/her skills. We expect you to take ownership of some parts of the platform, be proactive over the entire development lifecycle and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. If this sounds scary, don’t worry - you won’t be alone in this. We value teamwork, trust, communication and a healthy working relationship, so you can always count on the team for support.

About You

  • You have good problem-solving skills, a tendency towards simple and effective solutions, and a “getting things done” mentality.
  • Analytical thinking, troubleshooting skills, attention to detail.
  • You are a reliable, trustworthy person that keeps their promises.
  • Interest in keeping yourself up to date and learning new technologies.
  • Product-oriented mindset and eagerness to take part in shaping the products we build.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a fully distributed team.
  • Good communication skills in verbal and written English.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Computer Science or similar technical field
  • 1+ years of professional software development experience using Go
  • Experience building large-scale distributed systems, communicating asynchronously via message passing using RabbitMQ, Kafka or Pulsar
  • Deep understanding of DDD, CQRS, microservices architecture, and SQL/NoSQL data stores
  • Ability to write clean, efficient, maintainable, and well-tested code
  • Familiarity with test automation, cloud and containerization technologies, code instrumentation and CI/CD pipelines
  • Interest in taking full ownership of your services and managing them in a production environment including the troubleshooting of live incidents

Remote Work

We are hiring for talent, not for a specific location. You will find that members of our team are distributed all over Europe. Being a distributed team enables us to hire only the best, without being restricted to the talent pool available at a specific geographic location. However, to facilitate team communication and collaboration we currently require you to be located in Europe. You must also be able to travel to other European locations a few times a year for on-site meetings and workshops.

Compensation

The budgeted compensation range for this role is €58,000 to €76,000 annually, depending on your background and experience. As an independent contractor, you will be responsible for paying any taxes or applicable fees in your country of residence. In addition to that, we offer a number of perks to each of our team members as we truly believe in a healthy work-life balance and continuous learning.

Job Description

Popsa is a design-led, engineering focussed company that uses machine learning to help people rediscover their best experiences and turn them into beautiful printed products.

We grew about 500% in 2018 and we’re now shipping over half a million photos a week to 50 countries around the world.

This position is a great opportunity for experienced software engineers with a background in the likes of Go, Python, PHP or Node.js looking to apply their existing skillset and learn and use Go in a production environment.

Our Platform Technology Stack

  • We’re entirely hosted on AWS and make extensive use of many of their services (over 30 at last count!)
  • 15+ containerised microservices running in ECS (we’re open to exploring moving to Kubernetes in the future if appropriate). Our services talk protocol buffers over HTTP and are discovered with Consul.

  • Dockerised batch compute workflows
  • NoSQL databases (predominantly DynamoDB and ElasticSearch)

  • Experience with container technologies
  • Production database experience, bonus points for experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases

Bonus:

  • Experience with AWS services such as EC2, ECS, DynamoDB, S3, SNS, SQS and Lambda, as well as tools such as Terraform and Serverless
  • Experience designing, building and managing distributed event-driven * services

About HousingAnywhere

HousingAnywhere.com is the biggest global booking platform for mid-term rental accommodation in the world. Being a peer-to-peer marketplace, we create an experience that serves both sides of the rental accommodation market and creates a direct connection between tenants and landlords. HousingAnywhere.com is active in 50+ countries and 400+ cities. We are partners with 160+ universities worldwide and currently target the international students and young professionals market. We are expanding to other audiences as well.

In 2017, we were awarded 4th most innovative company in the Netherlands and the 1st most innovative company in Rotterdam by the Dutch Chamber of Commerce.

In 2018, we have been honored by being the fastest growing propTech company in the Netherlands as part of the Technology Fast 50 ranking of Deloitte.

The team

Our engineering team consists of a group of 30 people (product leads, engineering leads, architects, product owners, front-end engineers, back-end engineers, QA engineers and UX/UI designers), all passionate about our expertise.

Within the engineering team, we are organized in multiple cross-functional teams. By applying for this role, you will have the chance to become part of the Platform team.

We, the Platform team, are responsible for the core application of HousingAnywhere and are the team where it all started for HousingAnywhere. Here you’ll find those we call the “dinosaurs” of HousingAnywhere. Djordy, our CEO, started our team back when he was Head of Product.

We have ownership of listing management (listing creation, calendar management and listing representation) and also of chat and bookings functionalities. Down the line, everything we do should add to conversions and should help HousingAnywhere grow to be the number 1 market place for students and young professionals in the world.

Our mission as a team is to provide high-quality matching between tenants and landlords and to drive trust between the users of the marketplace. We think about these challenges every day in order to build a world-class product. If this sounds interesting to you, don't hesitate to read on.

About your role and impact in the platform team

HousingAnywhere has entered a scale-up phase in which we have seen impressive growth in terms of bookings and liquidity in the marketplace. This growth has brought us many technical challenges. On one end of the stack we build features and improvements to optimize conversions, on the other end we are making our infrastructure more resilient for future growth.

Some of the challenges we are tackling:

On the frontend side:

Consolidate our React based frontend with tests and consistent design Provide users with a more fulfilling mobile experience through PWA technologies and principles Integrate real-time technology to deliver content to users quickly Continuously improve SEO through performance and content delivery

On the backend side:

Pragmatically redesigning the core system to identify services and run them outside the main monolith Moving the core platform to Kubernetes and continuous deployment Rethinking the way we represent and store data to allow easier integrations through events and denormalization Monitoring and improving the performance of our private API. Your role in the team is to contribute to solving these challenges by implementing solutions and assisting our team so that our innovative technology can support future business needs.

As a Senior Software Engineer we expect you to mentor our less senior team members and to work closely with our team lead and PO to help them solve technical challenges they face.

We also expect you to challenge our choices and practices by bringing your opinion in the mix, because only by rethinking our best practices we can really evolve as people and as a company.

Our stack

In frontend we are React lovers. We use Redux, CSS-in-JS, TypeScript, NodeJS and all tools related to this stack. Our backend is powered by Golang backed with a Postgres database. We’re currently moving our backend to a service-oriented architecture (microservices). Our main infrastructure is in Google Cloud Platform. We've been using React, GraphQL and Golang in production environments since the early days. Since a few years we’ve started using Kubernetes and nowadays all our new services run in the cluster.

What we are looking for in a Senior Engineer:

  • A product-oriented person: you love developing products that help people
  • You take responsibility for the quality of your work, you like test automation and you are interested in TDD best practices
  • You're a real team player. You understand your colleagues may have different opinions and you consider them to make our product better.
  • Someone who is pragmatic
  • Ability to find a clean and simple solution that could be easily adapted and scaled as the business evolves
  • Leadership capabilities
  • Interest in new technologies
  • You understand that maintainable code is simple code that makes intentions explicit

Experience needed:

  • Excellent skills in one of Javascript, Golang, C++ or any other of the main languages
  • An educational degree in the field of Computer Science or similar is preferable, although passionate career changers are also welcome
  • Experience with online marketplaces, service providers and/or API development
  • Solid understanding of web user interface design and web development
  • Have 10 years of experience in web development. If you think you can do the job with fewer years experience, don’t hesitate to apply as well.
  • Basic understanding of how to prepare a good burger (our team lead even makes his own buns)

Perks & Benefits

What we offer:

  • Friday drinks
  • Flat organization structure
  • Being part of a company that is scaling up with millions of monthly visits, and thousands of paying customers
  • A career ladder: a structured way to take control of your career and your growth within HousingAnywhere
  • Competitive salary
  • Budget for laptop and for training
  • The possibility to have a real impact on the core platform of the product
  • Fun and international environment at the heart of Rotterdam. Our team consists of over 90+ people, with 25+ different nationalities.

Job description
You'll be working with a deeply technical engineering team who collectively bring a wealth of experience and broad technology skills. The calibre of the code we produce is what excites us each day and motivates us each. If you enjoy solving hard distributed system problems that are mostly platform agnostic and theoretical in nature, then you'll love working at Ably. Our team is made up of a strong remote contingent, however our base is in London and growing. We are strong believers in face-to-face communication where possible. Whilst this is a remote working role, being able to practically travel to London occasionally is highly preferable and working on a similar time zone is a must.

Day to day you can expect to be working on:

  • The "core" realtime platform which is largely Node.js, and some shared services in Go. You may also be required to work on the various services and routing layers of the platform which are built in Go and Elixir (we would happy if you are comfortable in either Go or Elixir, both would be a big win). As an aside, we use Ruby for all infrastructure automation and orchestration and occasionally write lower-level native code where necessary (such as native modules for Node). We're always revisiting the technologies we use and are always open to using new technologies where suitable.
  • Working within the realtime platform and solving distributed programming problems. Find out what it takes to be a distributed systems engineer.
  • Collaborating with the team to design, discuss and implement new features and services.
  • Diagnosing and fixing bugs in our platform using distributed tracing techniques.
  • Adding suitable test coverage to new features as well as existing functionality, conducting load tests using our frameworks, and generally helping to address platform stability and regression prevention.
  • Be responsible for the complete lifecycle of your features and code i.e. pull request, reviews, testing, deploy to staging and sandbox environments, then into production environments with ownership of any issues that arise. We are strong believers in all developers being involved in the system operations as well.
  • Contributing to open source projects that we support or use in our products. All of our client libraries are open source as well and may require your support at times.
  • Helping customers solve problems they are experiencing that may help us find bugs in the platform.
  • Support the wider team in regards to documentation and customer support.
  • Suggestions for new features or improvements to our protocol and API specifications.

Perks & Benefits

  • Salary range: £35k to £65k. Depends entirely on skills and experience.
  • Holidays: 25+ days excluding national holidays. Can be negotiated.
  • Benefit from a truly flexible working environment in which remote working and managing your own working time is the norm.
  • Work in an environment where code quality, technical challenges and delivery is what we all care about.
  • Skills development is intrinsic in the job. We're largely working on unsolved problems each day, and such, there is plenty of scope to widen your knowledge and skillset.
  • Work with genuinely nice people who care.

Job Description

Company Overview

At Netlify, we’re building a platform to empower digital designers and developers to build better, more elaborate web projects than ever before. We’re aiming to change the landscape of modern web development.

We recently raised $53M in Series C funding to bring forward the next generation of tooling for a more accessible web. This round was led by the EQT Ventures with participation from existing investors Andreessen Horowitz & Kleiner Perkins. This brings Netlify’s funding raised in total to $97M to date. Other past investors include Bloomberg Beta, Designer Fund, and Tank Hill Ventures, as well as the founders of Figma, GitHub, Slack and Yelp.

Netlify is a diverse group of incredible talent from all over the world. We’re ~44% woman or non-binary, and are composed of about half as many nationalities as we are team members.

About the Opportunity:

At Netlify, we’re building a system that supports millions of customer sites, processing over a petabyte of data. Over 10% of Internet users visit at least one site hosted by Netlify every 30 days. With our team, we truly empower our engineers through an autonomous pod-based model that allows our teams to own various stages of the customer journey. We’ve been remote-first since our inception and are globally distributed, spanning across North America, Europe, and Africa. We’re biased towards asynchronous planning and communication, meaning less meetings and more execution. We take documentation seriously and place our values of transparency, empowerment, and commitment at the forefront of everything we do. We’re driven by passion and we make sure that everyone on the team knows their value, feels ownership over their work, and can quickly see the impact of their efforts. Beyond just hiring smart, empathetic team members, we foster a culture where there are no dumb questions and our team can get access to the resources that they need to continue to learn. As a remote-first company, diversity drives our identity. Whether you’re looking to launch a new career or grow an existing one, Netlify is the type of company where you can balance great work with great life.

As a Backend Engineer at Netlify, you’ll work with a smart set of team members who are very motivated to keep learning and continuing to grow each other in a supportive way. We have a blameless culture where we solve problems as a team and everyone works together towards a common goal. There are different backend-oriented teams that your interests and experience could lead you into.

With our Observability team, your mission is to help our customers monitor and troubleshoot their apps, and evaluate their health and performance when exposed to real user traffic. You’ll be working with large amounts of streaming data, using a variety of technologies to process and store this data, providing our customers valuable information about their apps. If you’re excited about working with Go, Kafka, and Clickhouse, among other technologies, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do so with our team. The team ships changes several times a day, so you’ll quickly see the impact of your work.

With our Runtime & Integrated Apps team, your mission is to design and implement fault-tolerant distributed systems and create the supporting features that they leverage. You’ll be working across a variety of technologies to solve problems around the massive traffic that we receive on the platform, so if you’re excited about working in complex Go or Rust code, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do so with our team! The platform is at the core of Netlify, where you’ll be developing software that powers the lifecycle of a web request, enables developers to interact with the edge, and strives for better availability and higher throughput. This includes functionality like Edge Lambda invocation, caching & invalidation, request rules, pre-rendering, and logging aggregation. The platform is built on top of 6 different cloud providers and is truly global, supporting constant traffic from all over the world. We move quickly and adjust to changing priorities and conditions, and you’ll be able to help us focus on key priorities and pragmatic solutions.

What You’ll Bring:

  • A breadth of experience in compiled programming languages. Our main language is Go, but we also have projects span across multiple languages. We believe in picking the right language for the right problem.
  • An extensive history of delivering product features & deploying services with a high level of comfort iterating on a system while it is constantly serving traffic. Our system is always on with demanding availability and throughput challenges.
  • A good sense of how to work with web & CDN technologies, with some experience around systems performance and analysis and previous exposure to HTTP, DNS, and TLS.
  • A familiarity of working with databases like MongoDB and SQL and a high level of comfort working with data pipelines built with Kafka, Zookeeper, Consul
  • Curiosity and openness to learning new technologies and best practices
  • Passion for working in a collaborative environment, where you enjoy working with a diverse group of people with different expertise working across distributed locations around the world

Within 1 month, you’ll:

  • Learn about the business and dive into the inner workings of our platform.
  • Have one-on-one’s and pairing sessions with some of the people you’ll be working closely with and get to know your engineering peers across our product umbrella. Do a deep dive into the code base and learn more about Go, Rust, and Ruby.
  • Tackle your first ticket by committing changes & helping perform code reviews with the team.

Within 3 months, you’ll:

  • Establish strong async communication rhythms with your peers and leaders, practicing transparency and visibility in your progress against areas of focus
  • Join the on-call rotation and help the team pay down technical debt and improve reliability
  • Gain a more robust understanding of the needs of the product and become more comfortable with diagnosing problems
  • Deliver on your first project and help teams iterate on meaningful customer outcomes
  • Solicit feedback from your peers, including other engineers and teammates in your product team, and support your team through thoughtful feedback

Within 6 months, you’ll:

  • Elevate the work of the team and become a subject matter expert in an area that interests you
  • Contribute to building reliable microservices that are deployed into our Kubernetes cluster
  • Make a significant impact to our team by designing an extensive scalable solution to accommodate our rapidly growing user base
  • Develop automated abuse prevention tooling and building cutting edge features to empower developers
  • Fortify relationships with cross functional team members as well as broaden your connections across the organization

Within 12 months, you’ll:

  • Have significant ownership over making extensive contributions to a large scale system that delivers insights about traffic, function invocations, and other edge visibility issues.
  • Fully revamped & iterated on the way our edge logic works and how it resolves content.
  • Play a significant role in implementing globally distributed, latency-sensitive, high throughput services.
  • Extensively collaborate with engineering leadership to level up the team and continually improve the scalability and observability of the platform.
  • Start to coach and mentor other team members within Netlify’s engineering teams

At Netlify, we are a growing company that is constantly evolving so this timeline is intended to show you an example of what you can expect from the role. Keep in mind we’re always iterating, learning, and growing, thus expect these guidelines to continue to evolve as we expand. We’re excited for you to join us on the journey!

We’ll be giving you the tools you need to succeed and looking to you for suggestions to improve not just in your daily job, but every aspect of building a company.
