Job Description

We're a young company iterating over our remote culture so for now, we're only working with people in locations where the time zone is:

-3 hours > Paris time zone < +3 hours

Care Platform Team @Heetch

We are a new team with the mission to rebuild the entire customer support infrastructure to help our Customer Care team deliver exceptional customer experiences faster and better while continuously improving the whole experience - for both passengers and drivers.

Tech Stack

Have a look at our stack for a deeper overview: https://stackshare.io/heetch/engineering

Our team's values

Transparency: We discuss everything openly within the team. Our 'Speak up' culture is strong.

Remote first: Our team is fully distributed, and we work hard at that, but feel free to work from any of our offices in Paris, London, Brussels or Casablanca. Flexible work schedules are part of the plan.

Learn from failures: It's ok to fail, learn from it and try again.

Experiment things: Being free is part of our DNA, we can try things as long as it brings value.

Code quality: Tests are as important as code is.

Caring is sharing: We believe in continuous learning and want you to be proud of what you've learned/built. Sharing is a natural part of the process.

What will be your role?

You will help us build internal products and native mobile app features that enable Heetch to provide a world-class support experience. How about joining us to build the foundation of a Data Science feature such as Sentiment Analysis in a whole new Care platform?

Does it sound like you?

You have a solid experience in software development.

You can easily work with Golang or Ruby in production.

You have solid experience with APIs whatever the protocol (HTTP, gRPC).

If you've already been part of a Customer Support team before, we would already be a great match.

If automation is one of your passions, it's another bonus point.

What will you do?

• Build, test, deploy and monitor the services you'll work on

• Work on different parts of the system in Ruby and Golang (one service is in Elixir though)

• Build, test, ship and monitor features on top of third-party services such as Zendesk, Aircall Mandrill or Miuros

• Be an important part of the exit from a modular monolithic application to a microservices family

• Collaborate closely with our Care experts and Product Manager

• Write documentation and runbooks (Being a #RemoteFirst company, this is part of our DNA)

What will be your challenges?

• Create a new Golang microservice handling webhooks that push notifications to mobile apps

• Replace our search queries from PostgreSQL to an ElasticSearch cluster

• Add a new consumer/producer on top of our Kafka/RabbitMQ message queues from our mobile apps

• Advocate the other teams about how we use wrappers on top of Echo framework in order to align metrics company wise

• Upgrade some modular monolithic services in Ruby to a fresher version

  • Annual budget to travel to conferences and events

This role is essential to accelerate the improvement of the high expectations our customers have of DigitalOcean as we continue to grow and expand.

  • Working with peer SREs to improve services and processes (including architecture reviews, incident response, monitoring) in a cross-functional manner throughout the engineering organization

What We’ll Expect From You:

  • Distinguished track record as SRE (or similar role) with hands-on experience implementing reliability, process, and scaling solutions
  • History of fostering positive relationships with stakeholders and a track record of successful collaboration and coaching
  • Clear communication skills (both written and verbal) to document processes and architectures
  • Experience implementing disaster recovery best practices
  • Developing robust solutions that facilitate streamlined resolution of customer inquiries through use of technologies for automation, deflection, and issue management
  • Adept in Ruby and Go with a broad understanding of the full technology stack for a modern infrastructure

Why You’ll Like Working for DigitalOcean:

  • We value development. We are a high-performance organization that is always challenging ourselves to continuously grow. That means we maintain a growth mindset in everything we do and invest deeply in employee development. You’ll need to be great to get hired here and we promise you’ll get even better.
  • We care about you. We offer competitive health, dental, and vision benefits for employees and their dependents, a monthly gym reimbursement to support your physical health, and a monthly commute allowance to make your trips to and from work easier.
  • We invest in your future. We offer competitive compensation and a 401k plan with up to a 4% employer match. We also provide all employees with Kindles and reimbursement for relevant conferences, training, and education.
  • We want you to love where you work. We have great office spaces located in the heart of SoHo NYC and Cambridge and offer daily catered lunches to keep your hunger at bay. We’re also very remote-friendly—we use Slack to communicate across the company—and all remote employees have the opportunity to onboard in-office and take an all-expenses paid trip to our annual company offsite, Shark Week, to get quality in-person time with the team at least once a year. We also allow employees to customize their workstations to meet their needs—whether remote or in office.

Job Description

Senior Backend Engineer

Build great technology that improves millions of lives.

Overview

Simprints builds cutting-edge technology for some of the poorest individuals in the world, and in the most challenging environments on earth. We are working at the exciting interface of biometrics, technology, and international development where our product is used to radically increase transparency and effectiveness, making sure that every vaccine, every dollar, every education initiative reaches its intended recipient. Working with mentors from top companies like Google, Microsoft, and ARM, we design and develop both hardware and software by applying modern tools in distinctly un-modern environments with little to no internet connectivity. Simprints is currently on track to support over 4 million people by 2021.

We are looking for engineers with a focus on cloud-native backend development to join our growing tech team. You will work on an agile, collaborative team with a commitment to clean code and robust design, along with a strong culture of continuous learning and improvement. If building technology for global health sounds exciting, we want to meet you!

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate secure, reliable, and scalable services that allow Simprints to support projects all over the world
  • Leverage modern software development practices, such as DevOps, microservices and “serverless”
  • Actively develop junior engineers through mentoring and design/code reviews
  • Support growth of the team by attracting, on-boarding, and retaining top talent

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of professional experience building and operating backend services, with some experience in systems design
  • At least 1 year of professional experience working with a major public cloud provider (Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services) using serverless or managed services (e.g. DynamoDB, BigQuery, any FaaS)
  • Good understanding of software engineering basics such as (but not limited to) OOP, agile, REST, testing, SQL, NoSQL
  • Commitment to lifelong learning. You eat new technologies for breakfast and stay up-to-date with recent trends (e.g. microservices, event-driven architecture, serverless)
  • Ability to clearly communicate and document design decisions in both verbal and written form

Bonus points

  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or a related field
  • Familiarity with Golang && (Java || Kotlin || Scala)
  • Experience with mobile and/or web front-end. You have been on the other side of the API gateway

Why Simprints?

  • Use recent, developer-friendly technologies that let you focus on what matters:

  • Languages: Golang, Kotlin, Typescript

  • Infrastructure: Managed cloud databases (Firestore, BigQuery), managed compute nodes (App Engine, Cloud Functions), managed stream processing platform (Pub/Sub), managed logging/monitoring/tracing (Stackdriver)

  • Event-driven microservice architecture

  • Make a positive impact on millions of the most vulnerable people in the world

  • Work in a team of dedicated and talented engineers committed to writing high quality code. Our informal Clean Code Officer helps keep us honest

  • Optional opportunities to see our tech in action by joining our deployments around the world: Bangladesh, Ethiopia, or Zimbabwe just to name a few

  • Incredible perks

  • Unlimited paid time off. Last year, the average Simprints employee took a total of 31 days off (annual leave plus UK bank holidays)

  • Truly flexible working hours. More efficient late at night? That’s fine by us, start after lunch. We are looking for people who get the job done, not for people who get the job done between 9am and 5pm

  • A generous budget (>£1,500) to spend on both learning and wellness. In the past, Simprints engineers have spent this on attending tech conferences, enrolling in Udacity nanodegrees, joining bouldering gyms, and organizing instructor-led yoga sessions in the office

  • Two ‘LEGO Days’ each quarter where you can work on any project you want. Past projects have ranged from exploring image processing techniques to building a LEGO train to deliver beer around the office

  • Work from the coolest office in Cambridge (the Bradfield Centre - think ‘mini-WeWork’)
