You'll be working with a deeply technical engineering team who collectively bring a wealth of experience and broad technology skills. The calibre of the code we produce is what excites us each day and motivates us each. If you enjoy solving hard distributed system problems that are mostly platform agnostic and theoretical in nature, then you'll love working at Ably. Our team is made up of a strong remote contingent, however our base is in London and growing. We are strong believers in face-to-face communication where possible. Whilst this is a remote working role, being able to practically travel to London occasionally is highly preferable and working on a similar time zone is a must.

Day to day you can expect to be working on:

• The "core" realtime platform which is largely Node.js, and some shared services in Go. You may also be required to work on the various services and routing layers of the platform which are built in Go and Elixir (we would happy if you are comfortable in either Go or Elixir, both would be a big win). As an aside, we use Ruby for all infrastructure automation and orchestration and occasionally write lower-level native code where necessary (such as native modules for Node). We're always revisiting the technologies we use and are always open to using new technologies where suitable.
• Working within the realtime platform and solving distributed programming problems. Find out what it takes to be a distributed systems engineer.
• Collaborating with the team to design, discuss and implement new features and services.
• Diagnosing and fixing bugs in our platform using distributed tracing techniques.
• Adding suitable test coverage to new features as well as existing functionality, conducting load tests using our frameworks, and generally helping to address platform stability and regression prevention.
• Be responsible for the complete lifecycle of your features and code i.e. pull request, reviews, testing, deploy to staging and sandbox environments, then into production environments with ownership of any issues that arise. We are strong believers in all developers being involved in the system operations as well.
• Contributing to open source projects that we support or use in our products. All of our client libraries are open source as well and may require your support at times.
• Helping customers solve problems they are experiencing that may help us find bugs in the platform.
• Support the wider team in regards to documentation and customer support.

About the role

As a senior software engineer, you will work closely with the CTO, be a critical part of our core team, and have a huge influence over the direction of the company. You will lead projects and work with cross functional teammates to design and implement systems like our API, notifications service, and authentication service while focusing on scalability and performance. We are looking for a DevOps Engineer II who is familiar with cloud platforms, container technology and loves automation. As the first dedicated hire supporting cloud infrastructure, internal tooling and automation you will have an impact on how we operate all our systems and services. In this role you will help build and maintain cloud infrastructure for our tools and products as well as assist with customer deployments ensuring we are following best practices and industry standards. You'll directly contribute to the success of our new hosted product by serving a hybrid DevOps / SRE function. This role will participate in our on-call rotation.

• 3+ years as a software engineer, DevOps engineer, cloud engineer, site reliability engineer or systems administrator
• Demonstrable experience administering AWS, especially VPCs, Lambda, RDS, S3 and IAM Roles & Policies

Responsibilities

Explore new systems, and processes while also being able to discuss when (or when not) to use them. Help further design and implement our distinct homegrown time-series database from an architectural and engineering viewpoint. With a focus on performance and stability take our time-series database to the next level Participate in a culture that values thoughtful code reviews, and frequent deploys. Must-Have Qualifications

• Possess a deep understanding of software architecture, design, and testing
• Comfortable around Database fundamentals such as:
• (Probabilistic) Data Structures
• Big O notation
• File systems
• SQL processing
• Distributed systems
• Concurrency control
• Data replication & Consensus Algorithms

• Be proficient with golang, shell scripting
• Familiarity with unix systems

**Nice-to-Have Qualifications ** * Be familiar with, and comfortable contributing to, robust backend tooling to support our growing team. * Understand the ins-and-outs of debugging cloud systems, and, have in-depth experience with tuning performance for massive datasets * Experience writing documentation and tests, appreciating their importance to the team and product * Open source contributions, projects, and working with communities

**More About Us ** The team at Axiom has been fortunate to work together for many years across multiple companies and multiple products.

Throughout our journey, we would come across services that we wanted to use for monitoring/data visualization/etc, and we would always have a tough choice to make: hand over our data to a third party to get a fully featured product, or use a half-baked solution that could run inside our infrastructure and allow us to keep our data safely in our hands.

Job Description

Your mission

You'll be joining the team developing the web marketplace backend. We create the business logic both for the customer-facing frontend and for the "back-office" of the product. We work on all layers of the system from the database models to public APIs. An intrinsic part of your responsibilities would be helping us to make the right decisions since we strongly believe in team collaborative expertise, and eventually realizing and orchestrating these decisions throughout the complete product funnel.

Who are you

• You are a seasoned backend engineer with at least 3 years of experience in software development (internships excluded), preferably confident with Python stack.
• You have a startup mentality and have already worked in a startup-like environment before. You are able to work in a fast-paced mode using the iterative approach towards product development.
• You like to look out of the box and to learn latest trends and best practices also outside of backend area in order to broaden your horizons and provide a better understanding of the engineering ecosystem.
• You feel comfortable interacting with colleagues from other teams on a daily basis.
• Languages: English (fluent), German (a plus)
