Job Description

At Spaceship, we’re on a mission to help our generation build wealth. We started with Super and we recently launched Voyager - an investment app designed to make investing accessible. But we’re just getting started.

We are on the cusp of shaking up an industry by putting the customer first. We have the investor backing and product roadmap to realise our ambition, but we need the people to make it happen - especially when it comes to engineering.

While growth is a key focus, we aren’t hiring for the sake of it - the team’s engineering standard is high, and to build world-class investment products, we are dedicated to recruiting the best.

In summary: this represents an ideal opportunity for someone wanting to join a highly capable technical team in a growing startup that has proven itself at every step of the journey to date.

What will you be doing?

As a Software Engineer at Spaceship, you will work in a collaborative team environment where each engineer influences the technical and architectural direction. Our stack is modern - Go in the backend; React in the frontend - all running on a microservice and distributed architecture.

Some of our engineers focus purely on backend, some on frontend, others full-stack. We don’t have rigid preset roles, as we are growing and have space for exceptional engineers of different specialities and seniority.

Yes, we would love it if you have experience in the technologies we are using, but we also know that the best people learn quickly. So if you are excited by the prospect of building products that are unique to the market, while shipping code on a daily basis, then we would love to hear from you.

What are we looking for?

Our ideal wishlist is:

  • 3+ years experience as a software engineer
  • Proficiency in either: Golang, SQL, gRPC for backend; React, Redux for frontend
  • Experience in financial services
  • A startup mentality

Perks & Benefits

  • Very competitive salary + meaningful equity options (in one of Australia’s fastest growing financial services startups)
  • Flexible work hours
  • Brand new hardware with all the necessary accessories
  • Continuous learning and training

Job Description

Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands (relocation & visa) or remote (European time zones).

WHO WE ARE

After the 2008 financial crash, the international financial and business environment is more regulated than ever. The amount of required paperwork has increased exponentially. The deals are being blocked, the accounts are being frozen, the business is often getting paralyzed.

Project Plato was born in 2015 as an autonomous R&D unit working for Dolfin, an established British investment company, with the aim of automating sensitive business operations. We are a young and ambitious team frustrated by inefficiency of existing solutions.

5 years later, with the help of our software solutions, Dolfin was able to have

  • $4.1bn in client assets under management
  • $650m monthly brokerage flow
  • 10x increased speed of customer and employee onboarding
  • 30x more efficiency of its compliance officers

But this is only the beginning. Our mission is to help companies and business professionals around the world communicate with each other and do business with trust and simplified paperwork.

OUR TECH STACK

As a serious, business-oriented company, we develop our solutions exclusively in COBOL.

Just kidding! We use modern and diverse IT infrastructure. Our solutions are web-based, with backends in Golang andPython and frontends in Typescript and React. Data storages include PostgreSQL, DynamoDB and Amazon S3. The infrastructure consists of multiple backend services managed via Kubernetes/Helm, integrated with various AWS and third-party services. We also use Google Bazel, a secure and robust build system.

We strive to make our development process predictable, change-proof and well-organized to achieve the fastest possible product delivery pace without compromising reliability.

OUR TEAM

We are still small: Project Plato is less than 15 people in total but we are planning to grow to 20 soon. As part of the Project Plato back-end team, you will be working closely with Oleg and another 3 senior engineers. Oleg is our lead backend engineer who has been part of the team since 2015 when we established our office in Amsterdam. We are a group that values trust, growth, agility, mutual respect, taking ownership, and learning from each other through a culture of open feedback.

Job requirements

  • You are familiar with modern build systems (especially code generation), Unix-based operating systems, Docker/Kubernetes and cloud services.
  • You are a self-learner. You can analyze the code and documentation yourself, and you can ask questions when needed. Our team is small and focused, and we do not have spare time for thorough tutoring :(

  • You are able to take honest and direct feedback and openly discuss the problems.

Your main task will be to design and create or maintain micro-services within our infrastructure. Our product handles millions of transactions within a week. The API has its key part on it but the load is also on a multitude of other services.

You will work closely with our technical teams to learn about the possible technical bottle-necks. We have implemented different technologies such as Go (go-kit toolkit, gRPC…), Kubernetes, AWS, PostgreSQL and many others. Your role would be to lead us to new technologies that our product can benefit from.

Our product handles financial data making uptime one of our key KPIs. We expect that you will be able to work on high-availability and technically challenging programs.

You will join a talented team of 10 engineers, Data Scientists and DevOps, that are tech-passionate, working closely with most of them. Our main goal is to ensure that we can contribute to your personal growth as an engineer.

Payments are often compared to a black-box. Merchants around the world have issues understanding how their performance is and what optimization can be done. Our team is focused on building the best payment performance tool there is. It allows merchants to better understand their online processes as well as offline payments.

We offer 2 products to our merchants:The first, named Telescope, allows us to analyse, understand and make recommendations to a merchant. It does not require any technical integration from them and works mainly through webhooks, pulling data from APIs or parsing exported files.

About You

  • 3 years software development experience in Go
  • Know your way around web-related tech (HTTP, TLS, proxies, API conventions...)
  • Implemented APIs
  • Experience deploying applications as a part of a service-oriented architecture
  • Curious and unafraid of digging deeper to understand how systems of all kinds work
  • Keen to communicate with third-party gateways from a technical point of view as well as to maintain the best relationship as possible
  • Knowledge in the payment ecosystem
  • Worked on critical services
  • Some basic knowledge about ElasticSearch

What you will be doing

  • Payment gateway integrations: Interacting with external APIs through an in-house framework, handling webhooks notifications and parsing bank reconciliation summary files
  • Communication with third party payment gateways
  • Design and implement new workflows on our services

If you don't meet all the requirements but think you might still be right for the role, please apply anyway. We're always keen to speak to people who connect with our mission and values.

  • Empathy - An ability to listen, respect, and understand your co-workers, customers, and everyone you interact with no matter how different they are to you.
  • Adaptability - An ability to respond quickly. We are in a fast-paced industry and so we expect you to be creative when solving a new problem and comfortable under pressure.
  • Transparency - We believe that transparency is critical to empowering everyone to make the best decisions, both the company to its people and vice versa.
  • Integrity - Integrity creates trust. As both an organization collectively and as individuals, it is our most valuable asset.
