About the role

Compensate is at a critical juncture in terms of product development and engineering culture. We’re looking to add a logically minded developer that isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and help us develop and mature our product as we drive to make compensating for CO2 emissions a frictionless process. In this role, we’re seeking a forward thinking, backend-focused engineer to complement our growing engineering team and a technical advisor for our product function.

As we intend to move quickly to roll out the first phases of our compensation solutions, a bold and can-do attitude is a real asset. On the long-term, this role also caters to those interested in learning and building modern solutions. Making use of mostly open-source technologies, our roadmap includes novel approaches, such as data lakes to feed machine learning solutions, building a knowledge graph of carbon emissions, and event-driven solutions

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a One Stop Shop for business licensing.
  • Design and build architecture for decisions related to end-to-end product and public interfaces.
  • Drive cross-functional, technical conversations to stay in lock-step with product, partnerships and brand.
  • Proactively anticipate technology changes, technical risks, implement systems with fault-tolerant capabilities and ensure system stability and scalability.
  • Build, manage and grow relationships and projects with existing and future technical partners.

Who you are:

  • Comfortable with a variety of backend programming languages.
  • Experienced in building developer friendly RESTful APIs.
  • Ample web application development experience.
  • Experienced in writing microservices with a strong preference for folks that have done so in a Kubernetes environment.
  • Strong experience with containerization technologies e.g. Docker.
  • Comfortable with implementing products/services with 3rd party partners.
  • Comfortable authoring infrastructure-as-code.
  • Bold experimenter that has a strong internal compass for when to tinker and when to execute.
  • You are passionate about improving engineering practices and processes (TDD, CI/CD, pair programming, design/code reviews, etc.).
  • Excellent collaboration skills and leadership (e.g., coordinating, building consensus, influencing without authority, listening, being open to other perspectives).

Cherry on top:

  • Knowledge of event driven architecture and data engineering.
  • Knowledge of implementing ML solutions.
  • Interest in building knowledge graphs.
  • Knowledge of ecommerce and payment providers.
  • Full-stack experience with an emphasis on React/Redux programming experience.

What’s on the table for you:

  • A super meaningful job. When successful, you’re going to be part of saving the world!.
  • A friendly, open, and collaborative work environment, where the best ideas win.
  • Small-team action: freedom to have a big impact on the world and the company (with the accompanying responsibility).
  • Freedom to choose your tools.

Software Engineer (Go)
Utility Warehouse
London, United Kingdom
£40,000 to £90,000 a year
March 2019

More Than 6 Months Old

Job Description

Software Engineer (Go)

Technology

London NW9 5AB, UK

Utility Warehouse is an award winning multi-utility provider, our core offering is simple: all your utilities, one monthly bill. Our network of 45,000 partners add the human touch to our delivery, help us get the word out to our existing members and bring in new ones. We consistently win the Which? awards for our service and don’t believe “good enough” exists when it comes to customer satisfaction.

We’ve got the culture and focus of the earliest stage startups with the resources and strength of an extremely profitable and loved brand. Our eyes are on meteoric growth over the next few years. All the pieces to make it happen are here, we need you to help us put them together.

Our philosophy revolves around getting things done and we only hire people we can trust to do that. Bring your A game and you’ll always get ours. If you’re the type that can deliver you’ll be rewarded with small, fully autonomous teams that have real ownership of their products using a cutting edge stack in a best-idea-wins meritocracy. If that doesn’t quite cut it, we can throw in flexible and remote working (no, really) with top of market compensation.

As for the tech we use: the best tool is the right tool. Go and React are our bread and butter but nothing is stopping you from reaching for something else if it does it better. We deploy to Kubernetes across both AWS and GCP with some help from Terraform. We run a mature event sourced microservice architecture using Kafka, NATS and GRPC. As much as is possible we code in the open on GitHub. If it can be open- sourced, it shall. If we can submit a PR instead of building our own, we will. Getting your hands dirty from the top to the bottom of the stack isn’t a promise to be broken, it’s a requirement. If you’re only good at parts of it that’s okay, we’ll quickly make you good at all of it.

Squads currently hiring Software Engineers:

The Partner Experience squad is responsible for providing digital tools that help partners be more successful. The primary goal of the partner experience team is to increase the size of UW’s customer base by creating a well informed and highly motivated network. Using gamification techniques, the team delivers innovate tools covering and supporting the entire partner lifecycle from recruitment over on-boarding to enduring self-service business management to provoke continuous activity throughout the network.

The Energy squad is responsible for providing the systems that allow UW to integrate with the energy industry and function as a large Energy supplier; the frontend systems that allow our operational staff to manage the UW energy supply base and the systems to provide information and accurate energy billing to our customers. The team’s primary goals are to improve the operational efficiency of the operations and customer services teams by providing innovative and simple to use software solutions; ensure business continuity as a supplier by providing robust industry integration and regulatory compliant systems and build the platforms to allow UW to become an innovator for customer offerings in the Energy supply market.

The Insurance squad is responsible for the delivery of enhanced P&L through the successful growth of our new insurance business unit. It’s anticipated this 6th core service might also help improve customer retention. The team is responsible for the delivery of a platform for the insurance suite of services and products which will grow over time. The team owns the lifecycles of the insurance policies and manages any industry interactions, API integrations that are required to orchestrate this. This team is also responsible for enhancing customer data from customers answers during quotes process.

February 2019
3 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old

Job Description

About Fraugster:

Fraugster is a payment security company with the goal of eliminating fraud and increasing our customers’ profits. Over the last years we’ve invented an artificial intelligence technology that combines human-like accuracy with machine scalability. This ability lets us foresee fraudulent attacks before they actually happen and gives us a distinct competitive advantage over every other player in the payment security space.

We’re already working with some of the most well-known payment and e-commerce companies in the world. Notable clients include companies like Ingenico and SIX Payments. Fraugster is backed by top-tier investors and is currently managing billions of Euros for its clients.

Job Description:

We make decisions based on data, it’s the core of our business, and it’s providing insights into the effectiveness of our product and features. We believe data powers creativity and productivity, and that a robust, reliable and scalable infrastructure is needed to support this.

Our Observability team is operating the solutions that make gaining insights from data possible with monitoring, logging, metrics and other telemetry tools. • Provide easy ways to understand the state of the services at a given point in time, including the ability to trace requests across multiple services
  • Work with development teams in an advisory capacity to optimize usage of monitoring and logging tools: what to log, measure and alert, which metrics and events are important and why through guidance, documentation and internal discussion
  • Write well-crafted, well-tested, readable, maintainable code
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and distribute knowledge, including Open-Source projects
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers as the team grows

  • You are knowledgeable about a variety of infrastructure and development topics
  • You have worked in an environment that runs multiple services handling a large number of transactions, owned by different teams

The experience we are looking for:

  • Designing, implementing and debugging large-scale data infrastructure systems, and identifying their performance bottlenecks
  • Understanding of long-term impacts of key design decisions and handling failure scenarios

We value ownership and innovation, and we build our teams with that in mind. We want each team to be responsible and accountable for what they ship. We also don't want to reinvent the wheel every time, so we try to get alignment in terms of practices and technologies. Backend Engineer
Resin
London, United Kingdom / Remote
$53,000 to $58,000 a year
August 2018
1 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old

Job Description

Resin.io provides a software platform that helps developers build, deploy and manage code on connected devices. We brought Docker to embedded GNU/Linux devices in 2013 and have been building our IoT toolkit ever since. We also maintain a variety of successful open source projects including Etcher, Balena, and resinOS, and made contributions to high-exposure projects such as Docker, Electron, and AppImage.

Our technology is open, standards-based, and proven in production across a wide range of scenarios from drones, 3D printers, point-of-sale devices, tidal turbines, skyscrapers and more. Our investors include DFJ, Aspect Ventures, GE, and Ericsson.

Resin is a highly distributed, remote-friendly company with a pretty much flat hierarchy. Our organization is adaptive, getting feedback signals from our users and systems. Right now we organize ourselves by projects, which allow us to build complex features and solve big problems, while staying mutable. As a distributed group, we rely on clear communication and the rule of "assume positive intent" to help us work together across time zones, cultures and first languages. Our base of operations is nominally London, though really we are living all over the world: from Barcelona to Bulgaria, Argentina to Vietnam, and many more.

On being a Backend Engineer at resin.io

We maintain a service infrastructure for IoT devices, and this is where we have quite a bit of our engineering talent. You will be actively working on one or more of these core components, fixing bugs, solving complex technical problems, and implementing user-facing features across the resin.io stack. While resin.io focuses on IoT, the majority of our engineers don't require embedded programming expertise.

People who are successful engineers are well-rounded generalists and great communicators. They are eager to take responsibility for a project, and are able to make good decisions about the project because they have the context of what's important.

We don't require engineers to be already familiar with the technologies we use. We are happy to invest in people that showcase a strong understanding of the challenges of building secure distributed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Actively invest back in our own technology, libraries, and frameworks
  • Understand security best practices and strive to apply them in your work
  • Be highly motivated to produce great code
  • Evaluate customer requirements and other inputs to determine the scope and timing of new functionality
  • Design, architect, and own the execution of your projects
  • Ensure the architecture of our distributed system remains cohesive
  • Collaborate, brainstorm, and coordinate work with other resineers
  • Understand the high-level goals, and thus know how to prioritize your work
  • Challenge orthodoxy when that will help the product evolve
  • Work efficiently with a certain amount of ambiguity in the tasks you're executing

REQUIREMENTS

Need to have:

  • Desire to make yourself and others more effective. You'd be bothered by an inefficient process
  • Good understanding of software engineering practices and how to apply them
  • Excellent written communication skills, and fluency in English
  • Self-discipline to take on a project and push it to completion without too much management. You also know when to ask for help
  • Strong problem-solving abilities. You know how to split a complex problem into incremental pieces
  • Basic front-end development skills

Nice to have:

  • A sample of your work (URL or attached sample)
  • Contributions to OSS projects (please include a URL)
  • Having worked remotely before
  • Experience with Resin.io as a user
  • Experience with embedded GNU/Linux, anything ranging from personal projects with a Raspberry Pi to commercial or industrial scenarios with custom devices
  • Experience with React, Node.js, Docker, PostgreSQL, or Kubernetes
  • Experience with embedded development and microprocessors
  • Experience with the Electron framework and cross-platform development
  • Experience leading software projects in the open source world

Make sure to let us know if any of these items apply to you!

Perks & Benefits

  • Work with an extremely talented, diverse team
  • Equipment of your choice
  • Remote-friendly
  • Flexible working hours
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • Annual company gathering in an international location - this year, Barcelona in October
  • We send you hardware for side projects!

Improbable is dedicated to building powerful technology designed to help solve previously impossible problems and enable the creation of new realities. In gaming and entertainment, Improbable unlocks truly next-generation gameplay through virtual worlds of unprecedented scale, persistence and richness. In other industries, we hope to help answer critical questions through simulations that could lead to a better functioning world.

Our platform, SpatialOS, lets developers transcend the limits of regular computation, allowing swarms of servers running in the cloud to cooperate in order to simulate worlds far larger and more complex than any single server could.

We are a British technology company proudly building a diverse workforce, driven by a shared desire to improve and achieve extraordinary things. We’re crafting technology for the future and fostering a problem-solving culture that embraces innovation through iteration and experimentation.

Your Mission

Engineering is at the heart of Improbable. We solve some of the hardest problems around in areas such as distributed systems, high-performance cloud computing, messaging and much more.

We are technology neutral and believe in well-tested, robust code. Much of our platform is built in GoLang/Java with areas of C++, TypeScript and C#. We use Open Source technologies (such as CoreOS, etcd, Fleet, Docker, Prometheus, gRPC) and give back to the community through open source contributions when we can.

We’re hiring Senior Software Engineers across multiple teams. There is always a diverse range of challenging and interesting projects to work on. Similarly, we welcome diverse engineering backgrounds and are able to offer highly interesting challenges across all our teams, we never hire to fill a gap.

  • Core infrastructure that underpins seamless scaling (networking, packing, storage, containers, logging, security across all compute providers)
  • Creation of world-class, robust APIs and SDKs for external customers
  • Developing tooling to understand, visualise and reason about large real-time simulations

Competencies

  • A strong software engineering pedigree, comfortable choosing the most appropriate language/technologies for the project at hand.
  • You have previously operated in a senior capacity and mentored or coached more junior engineers from a technical perspective.
  • Software Engineering is more than just a job to you. Perhaps you contribute to Open Source projects, blog or speak at events occasionally, or just spend a great deal of your time thinking about interesting problems.
  • You're disappointed when you're not learning something new or stretching yourself.
  • You can offer your opinion and respectfully reason with people, but equally commit to the direction decided by the majority after being heard.
  • You value working in different problem areas and are prepared to work in whichever team is necessary to add the most value to the business.
  • You embrace that in a fast-growing start-up, priorities can change quickly.
  • You're accountable and get satisfaction from shipping stuff on time / delivering quantifiable results.
  • You go out of your way to help others achieve and improve as a team.
  • You're modest when the results speak for themselves, and humble enough to take responsibility when they don't.

Experience Of The Following Would Be Advantageous

  • Building large-scale distributed systems
  • Working on cloud-based scalable architectures
  • Building high-traffic, robust APIs, SDK or web architectures
  • Working with Game Engines (i.e. Unity, Unreal, CryEngine etc…)

Numus Logo
Senior Go Backend Architect & Developer
Numus
Remote / Zug, Switzerland
$70,000 to $130,000 a year
August 2021
1 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old

Job Description

Make a difference in an innovative team and build a world class big data research platform.

Numus is a global group of quantitative, engineering, and blockchain experts. We are contributing to shape the future of applied decentralized finance. We are a native global and decentralized team with an office presence in Zug, Switzerland. We combine extensive and diverse experience from the Crypto, Quant, Tech and Finance worlds but are bound by a shared passion for sharing ideas, learning from each other and solving new problems together.

Are you keen to work in a startup where your ideas, experience and willingness to find creative solutions – and not your title – makes a difference?

You will help design, create and improve our central automated trading platform, written mostly in Go. You will help to make our architecture even more secure, resilient and fault-tolerant while maintaining a modular, well-tested architecture with simple and elegant code, focussed on speed and latency. A good line of code for you is the one which wasn’t written. You see infrastructure as code and see the deployment and monitoring as an integral part of your work, DevOps-style. You rather try to use a AWS cloud service instead of running your own piece of infrastructure or code. Security is always on your mind, and you’re maybe always a little bit too paranoid. You will also help research developers to port their Code to Golang and maintain code quality. You love to explore new state-of-the-art tools and discuss them with your team. Contributing to Open Source projects (e.g. modules to connect to exchanges) is an important part of your work as well. You’re super detail and quality oriented and love to work in a team where most problems haven’t been solved so far – so we highly value creativity to find solutions.

Requirements

  • Deep understanding of modern cloud-based backend architectures and technologies
  • Golang coding experience
  • Database technologies, especially latency-focussed NoSQL (AWS DynamoDB, Redis, ElasticSearch, AWS S3)
  • Distributed Systems (gRPC, Redis)
  • DevOps deployment on AWS (Docker containers, AWS CloudFormation/CDK, AWS Opsworks, AWS ECS/Fargate)
  • Maintaining a CD/CI Pipeline (AWS CodePipeline/Build/Deploy, Github Actions, TravisCI)
  • Monitoring tools (AWS X-Ray, AWS CloudWatch, Datadog, Honeybadger, New Relic)
  • Security Tools and Concepts (especially on AWS: VPC, IAM Roles, Security Groups)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and high attention to details
  • Highly self-organized, self-learner, strongly quality oriented
  • Fluent English speaker

Beneficial Requirements

  • Analysis and math skills
  • Experience with Python, JavaScript/TypeScript (AWS Lambda) and Ruby (on Rails)
  • Experience with Serverless technologies (AWS Lambda)
  • Experience with big data management and analysis toolchains like Databricks, Apache Spark, Kinesis
  • Extended know-how about security, hardening and attack vectors
  • Interest in crypto and/or financial markets How to apply

What we offer

If you are eager to join a knowledge driven group of brilliant minds that value results above anything and do not engage in any political internal discussions, then you should join Numus.

As everyone of us is constantly learning and we are far from definitive answers yet, we embrace a global, diverse and collaboration-oriented team culture. We value open, smart and sharp minds, no matter their background. They are our greatest asset.

If you are curious, scientifically minded, entrepreneurial, passionate, a little bit quirky and fun: we would like to get to know you and become a part of our journey. Develop your skills together with us in a humble, remote, lean and agile environment.

We operate in a non-hierarchical structure on a self-management basis where skill counts instead of titles. Take initiative, initiate change and take responsible action. You also know when to ask for help.

You’ll be working with the latest cutting edge technology to solve real world problems. Creativity is a must in our company. We’re organized as a full remote-first company, so Everybody can choose freely to work remotely or from our offices or a mix of both, we will be able to adjust to your work-life balance.
