Job Description

Do you ever wonder what happens inside the cloud?

Based in New York, DigitalOcean is a dynamic, high-growth technology company that serves a robust and passionate community of developers, teams, and businesses around the world. We believe that today’s entrepreneurs are changing the world through software. Our mission is to empower these entrepreneurs by bringing modern app development within reach for any developer, anywhere in the world.

We want people who are passionate about building the systems, culture, and processes that will improve the resiliency, reliability, scaling, and performance for cloud services.

We are looking for an experienced Site Reliability Engineer to work closely with our product engineering and infrastructure teams. Reporting to the Director of Platform Systems, the Site Reliability Engineer will be performing a mix of hands-on development, coaching, and collaborating with other teams and stakeholders to help bring DigitalOcean’s engineering systems and culture up to the next level.

This is a key opportunity to make a significant impact in DigitalOcean’s engineering and operational systems and influence future product designs and requirements. This role is essential to accelerate the improvement of the high expectations our customers have of DigitalOcean as we continue to grow and expand.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Performing hands on technical work to directly improve the reliability, resiliency, and scaling of our key platform systems
  • Working with stakeholders to develop and implement reliability and performance metrics
  • Facilitate DigitalOcean’s culture of learning by providing insight and recommendations for improvement
  • Coaching teams and individuals on reliability best practices and solutions
  • Working with other SREs and engineering leaders to define the architectures and practices that should be adopted in order to deliver on our engineering and operational goals
  • Establishing best practices for development, architecture, deployment, and operations
  • Working with peer SREs to improve services and processes (including architecture reviews, incident response, monitoring) in a cross-functional manner throughout the engineering organization

What We’ll Expect From You:

  • Distinguished track record as SRE (or similar role) with hands-on experience implementing reliability, process, and scaling solutions
  • History of fostering positive relationships with stakeholders and a track record of successful collaboration and coaching
  • Clear communication skills (both written and verbal) to document processes and architectures
  • Experience implementing disaster recovery best practices
  • Developing robust solutions that facilitate streamlined resolution of customer inquiries through use of technologies for automation, deflection, and issue management
  • Adept in Ruby and Go with a broad understanding of the full technology stack for a modern infrastructure
  • Advocate of effective development environments with the use of CI/CD tooling and configuration management technologies such as Chef or Ansible

Why You’ll Like Working for DigitalOcean:

  • We have amazing people. We can promise you will work with some of the smartest and most interesting people in the industry. We work hard but we always have fun doing it. We care deeply about each other and take our “no jerks” rule very seriously.
  • We value development. We are a high-performance organization that is always challenging ourselves to continuously grow. That means we maintain a growth mindset in everything we do and invest deeply in employee development. You’ll need to be great to get hired here and we promise you’ll get even better.
  • We care about you. We offer competitive health, dental, and vision benefits for employees and their dependents, a monthly gym reimbursement to support your physical health, and a monthly commute allowance to make your trips to and from work easier.
  • We invest in your future. We offer competitive compensation and a 401k plan with up to a 4% employer match. We also provide all employees with Kindles and reimbursement for relevant conferences, training, and education.
  • We want you to love where you work. We have great office spaces located in the heart of SoHo NYC and Cambridge and offer daily catered lunches to keep your hunger at bay. We’re also very remote-friendly—we use Slack to communicate across the company—and all remote employees have the opportunity to onboard in-office and take an all-expenses paid trip to our annual company offsite, Shark Week, to get quality in-person time with the team at least once a year. We also allow employees to customize their workstations to meet their needs—whether remote or in office.
  • We value diversity and inclusivity. We are an equal opportunity employer and we do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Software Engineer
Pivotal
London, United Kingdom
£60,000 to £75,000 a year
July 2019
1 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old
This job posting is no longer available

Job Description

Always be kind: a simple daily affirmation and one that feels more like a personal mission statement than a corporate motto -- but Pivotal isn’t just any corporation. Underpinning our world-class capabilities in cloud-native software delivery and agile development methodologies is one common thread: empathy. Not only do we want to transform the way the world builds software, we also want to make sure that sustainable pace, kindness, and diversity are at the core of every enterprise.

Known for taking an iterative approach, our 2000+ employees are empowered every day to help shape the way we build software. Pivotal is committed to open source, a diverse culture, and fostering safe spaces for all of our individual employees.

*You*

You are looking for a collaborative environment building distributed systems that enable enterprises to focus on their business rather than re-architecting a cloud platform from scratch. Pair programming has always been something that you wanted to try out.

Furthering your education has always been a goal of yours. Learning new programming languages and getting to work with Golang piques your interest.

Contributing to open source software makes you feel good about the transparency it brings to an organization's code quality.

*Us*

Agile concepts are at the core of our process. We have a whole host of Pivotal Practices around Test Driven Development, pair programming, team retrospectives, technical retrospectives and continuous integration. We are excited to teach these to you and innovate with you on their implementation.

We stick to a strict 8 hour a day schedule (with flexible start and end times). Although on-call rotations are part of most teams, incidents are exceedingly rare.

We pair in small teams of 4 - 8 people in our London office, conveniently located at Old Street. We use Slack to stay connected and Tmux for pairing. We are working hard to make sure that our distributed teams function as smoothly as our distributed systems.

You'll rarely be alone when developing; from pairing all day to 1 on 1 time with your manager, there is always a Pivot there to lend a helping hand. Mentorship from senior engineering leadership is built right into our process - you’ll always be empowered.

Making an investment in each Pivot’s professional development improves the organization as a whole. We encourage you to go to conferences or purchase those pricey O'Reilly books - and we’ll give you a budget each year to do it.

*Your Day*

As cliche as it may sound, every day is completely different from the next. We have a general framework for what our day looks like and the majority of it will be spent with your pair:

9:06 AM - Office-wide stand-up to build office cohesion and start the day off together.

9:10 AM - Team standup - discuss any blockers, choose pairs, maybe even tell a joke.

9:30-12:30 PM - Start pairing, tackle an open GitHub issue and open a pull-request.

12:30-1:30 PM - Lunch! Grab food from one of the many nearby restaurants, run an errand, or join a book club.

1:31-6:00 PM - Get back with your pair and start an acceptance test for a big feature.

While that schedule does look busy, don’t worry - we take ample breaks throughout the day. Take a walk to get boba, read a book on the balcony, play a game of ping pong, or chat with co-workers at the snack bar. Sustainable pace is held in high regard. We know there is a life outside of work, we want you to be able to spend time with family and friends.

*Desired Skills / Experience*

We know from experience that not ticking every box on the skills sections stops many from applying. You should apply regardless of your self-assessment because we want to hear from you.

  • Ability to dive into a large polyglot codebase and contribute as you learn
  • Being okay with the uncomfortable feeling that comes from learning new things
  • Interest in exploring new programming paradigms, languages, and patterns
  • Demonstrable ability to research problems and break them into discrete parts

*Nice to Haves*

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or related field
  • Operations or Systems Administration experience, particularly on UNIX
  • Worked with large Go/Ruby/Rails codebases
  • Used Test Driven Development (TDD) extensively
  • Worked in a pair programming environment
  • Contributed to an open source project
  • On-call experience with production grade systems
  • Has mentored others in a professional setting

Cloud Foundry engineers participate in an on-call rotation with their team to support software they work on.

Pivotal is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer that will consider all qualified applicants, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, gender identity or expression, national origin, genetics, age, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.

Software Engineer (Go)
Utility Warehouse
Colindale, London, United Kingdom / Remote
£45,000 to £90,000 a year
April 2019
1 Applicants This Week
More Than 6 Months Old

Job Description

Company

Utility Warehouse is a FTSE 250 organisation which has established itself as the most trusted supplier of utility products in the UK. Utility Warehouse is the only genuine multi-utility operator in the market providing gas, electricity, landline, broadband, mobile & insurance products and services to households and businesses nationwide, all on one single monthly bill. With over 600,000 customers the organisation has grown through a philosophy of offering savings, simplicity and service. Customers enjoy a number of advantages, including membership of a discount club, and a unique CashBack reward system on everyday shopping. The organisation does not advertise, preferring instead to invest in customer services and to keep prices low. Utility Warehouse has predominantly grown through a network of over 45,000 partners who operate as lead generators and advocates for the organisation. These partners come from a range of personal and professional backgrounds, and actively take it upon themselves to promote and recommend Utility Warehouse to friends, families and their professional networks. Trust between these partners and the organisation is crucial, and ensures that customer service and satisfaction are consistently prioritised.

Background

Utility Warehouse is an energetic and entrepreneurial challenger in a market traditionally composed of monolithic, slow competitors. In the utilities market, it is difficult to compete on the quality of the product and therefore establishing a strong value proposition is crucial to avoid a race to the bottom on price. Utility Warehouse has established itself as the most trusted brand in its sector, winning accolades from industry publications and consumer advisory guides. Customer service is at the core of their business ethos and another way they differentiate from their competitors; 93% of customers would recommend the organisation to a friend. By establishing a best-in-class experience for the consumer, Utility Warehouse commands a strong market position in an age where technology makes it increasingly easy to access information on consumers’ experiences. The organisation is well-placed to capture an increasingly large portion of the £52bn market that they operate in. By staying true to their values of trust and service, Utility Warehouse is the only major provider in the market to be both growing and profitable.

Utility Warehouse has an adaptive, agile, fast-paced culture which has enabled it to grow rapidly. The management team has expanded over the last two years as part of the growth strategy with significant hires in technology, legal, marketing, and finance. These hires and the rebuilding of the platform will enable the company to grow to two million customers over the medium-term. Utility Warehouse operates at high-transactional scale, processing large volumes of data. This presents new opportunities to understand customer behaviours better and to create an improved customer experience as a result.

Opportunity

With ambitious product plans for the future, it is important to have a solid foundation to enable growth for the business, allow innovation and achieve rapid time to market. To realise this, the underlying platforms and systems must be designed to be flexible, modular and resilient.

You will join our Insurance team tasked with designing and building the insurance platform from the ground up to enable new opportunities to our insurance product and services.

The platform will be a set of simple and intelligent APIs built using microservices and event driven architectures. Internally, the decision and rating engines will leverage integration with numerous 3rd party systems to provide quotes, offer addons, allow policy uptake and operational management.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, architect and build multi-channel platform solutions
  • Contribute ideas and influence business wide solution architecture
  • Build robust and scalable end-to-end software solutions
  • Participate in the entire development life cycle, from requirements to delivery
  • Influence other team members in a cross functional product team
  • Build integrations with legacy systems with a focus on eventually moving away from them

Key requirements

  • Good engineering skill with an eye for both modelling and code architecture
  • Knowledge of when and how to apply test driven approaches
  • Understanding of microservice/service oriented and distributed architectures
  • Understanding of event source and/or event driven architectures
  • Belief in agile principles and a devops culture and be familiar working in a agile enviornment
  • Experience with a modern programming language (preferably golang)
  • Experience with containers and container orchestration technology will be beneficial but not essential

Interview Process

Hangout with engineering manager, pairing interview and whiteboard (non-algorithmic)

Job Description

Back is a young software company from Berlin with the mission to enable companies to focus on what they do best. We’re building a collaboration and automation platform to untangle repetitive questions and workflows around the workplace.

You will join our experienced engineering team to build our machine learning pipeline and develop some of our first machine learning supported features. If you are excited about building highly scalable solutions built on a modern stack using best practices then this role is perfect for you.

This position is based in our growing HQ in Berlin.

🔨 What you will do

  • You will take ownership of automation features from the beginning - understanding the problem - to the end - deploying the model on production -.
  • You will setup the environment to speed up our machine learning development.
  • You will implement and tune state-of-the-art ML models to get the best results given the available data.
  • You will effectively communicate and document your approach, progress, results and challenges with the team.
  • You will help us grow the machine learning team: enforce best practices, interview candidate, etc.

👩‍🔬 Who are we looking for

  • You can quickly grasp the business context of the problem and using your knowledge of how the model is going to be used, you can choose the right evaluation metric.
  • You can dig deep into the data to choose the right dataset split and identify pitfalls arising from non-iid samples.
  • You can combining both your practical and theoretical ML knowledge to set the right priorities when choosing which idea or approach to try next.

  • You'll work on unbalanced datasets, not all our customers are the same size.
  • Our customers have different processes, different vocabulary. You will face dual-domain adaptation problems.
  • The good news: our application generates labeled data and we capture all the signals of our users' interactions, so you'll focus on training models, not labelling data. Yeah!

  • We discuss behavioral or personal problems in private, only with the people being involved.

Radical transparency

  • We do not hide anything inside and outside the team. We voluntarily and constantly share our successes, our mistakes, and our progress.

Radical open-mindedness

  • We share our knowledge and experience to find the best solutions as a team, never to be right or the smartest in the room.
  • We share our opinion only when we have the willingness to change it.

Radical pragmatism

  • We design strategic solutions with a growth mindset. We seek for solutions driving progress at the fastest pace and lowest cost to create progressive long-lasting impact.
  • We refuse dogma. We make the best decision for ourselves, in our context.

Customer-first

  • We consider success as having a high customer impact and satisfaction.
  • Each decision we make must have sooner or later a positive impact on our customers.
  • We privilege customer satisfaction over our comfort.
  • We refuse to compromise the quality of our product and customer experience.

  • You will team up with the founders to create a great product with your signature on it.
  • We love open-source and will support you in the process of contributing to libraries we use or open-sourcing some of our work.

About HousingAnywhere

HousingAnywhere.com is the biggest global booking platform for mid-term rental accommodation in the world. Being a peer-to-peer marketplace, we create an experience that serves both sides of the rental accommodation market and creates a direct connection between tenants and landlords. HousingAnywhere.com is active in 50+ countries and 400+ cities. We are partners with 160+ universities worldwide and currently target the international students and young professionals market. We are expanding to other audiences as well.

In 2017, we were awarded 4th most innovative company in the Netherlands and the 1st most innovative company in Rotterdam by the Dutch Chamber of Commerce.

In 2018, we have been honored by being the fastest growing propTech company in the Netherlands as part of the Technology Fast 50 ranking of Deloitte.

The team

Our engineering team consists of a group of 30 people (product leads, engineering leads, architects, product owners, front-end engineers, back-end engineers, QA engineers and UX/UI designers), all passionate about our expertise.

Within the engineering team, we are organized in multiple cross-functional teams. By applying for this role, you will have the chance to become part of the Platform team.

We, the Platform team, are responsible for the core application of HousingAnywhere and are the team where it all started for HousingAnywhere. Here you’ll find those we call the “dinosaurs” of HousingAnywhere. Djordy, our CEO, started our team back when he was Head of Product.

We have ownership of listing management (listing creation, calendar management and listing representation) and also of chat and bookings functionalities. Down the line, everything we do should add to conversions and should help HousingAnywhere grow to be the number 1 market place for students and young professionals in the world.

Our mission as a team is to provide high-quality matching between tenants and landlords and to drive trust between the users of the marketplace. We think about these challenges every day in order to build a world-class product. If this sounds interesting to you, don't hesitate to read on.

About your role and impact in the platform team

HousingAnywhere has entered a scale-up phase in which we have seen impressive growth in terms of bookings and liquidity in the marketplace. This growth has brought us many technical challenges. On one end of the stack we build features and improvements to optimize conversions, on the other end we are making our infrastructure more resilient for future growth.

Some of the challenges we are tackling:

On the frontend side:

Consolidate our React based frontend with tests and consistent design Provide users with a more fulfilling mobile experience through PWA technologies and principles Integrate real-time technology to deliver content to users quickly Continuously improve SEO through performance and content delivery

On the backend side:

Pragmatically redesigning the core system to identify services and run them outside the main monolith Moving the core platform to Kubernetes and continuous deployment Rethinking the way we represent and store data to allow easier integrations through events and denormalization Monitoring and improving the performance of our private API. Your role in the team is to contribute to solving these challenges by implementing solutions and assisting our team so that our innovative technology can support future business needs.

As a Senior Software Engineer we expect you to mentor our less senior team members and to work closely with our team lead and PO to help them solve technical challenges they face.

We also expect you to challenge our choices and practices by bringing your opinion in the mix, because only by rethinking our best practices we can really evolve as people and as a company.

Our stack

In frontend we are React lovers. We use Redux, CSS-in-JS, TypeScript, NodeJS and all tools related to this stack. Our backend is powered by Golang backed with a Postgres database. We’re currently moving our backend to a service-oriented architecture (microservices). Our main infrastructure is in Google Cloud Platform. We've been using React, GraphQL and Golang in production environments since the early days. Since a few years we’ve started using Kubernetes and nowadays all our new services run in the cluster.

What we are looking for in a Senior Engineer:

  • A product-oriented person: you love developing products that help people
  • You take responsibility for the quality of your work, you like test automation and you are interested in TDD best practices

Job Description

At Geckoboard we help businesses use their data to align their teams on the metrics that matter most to them. We’ve been busy reimagining the way our customers get their data in Geckoboard and have a lot of interesting and creative work to do to shape their experiences. Right now, we’re looking for curious problem solvers to help us on this journey.

What are we working on?

We've completely rebuilt how data gets into Geckoboard from third-party APIs, thanks to a query planner that's written entirely in Go. Our query planner takes in the metrics that a customer would like to track, and produces a plan for how to fetch and transform those metrics from a third-party JSON API such as Zendesk, Intercom, Google Analytics, etc.

We’re now working on extending this platform and building various microservices for tracking our customers' rate limits and scheduling metric refreshes in the most efficient way possible. We’re also creating a caching engine that ensures we don't waste precious API calls on data that we know hasn't changed since last time.

The team are also in the middle of splitting up our existing REST APIs into gRPC microservices with segregated data stores. Which is a huge opportunity for us to rethink some of the fundamental assumptions about Geckoboard's data model and how we can re-architect our systems for greater reliability and to enable us to ship with more confidence.

We don’t expect you’ll have worked on all of these kinds of projects before, but if they take your fancy and you’re excited about working on distributed systems and database technologies at scale, we’d love to hear from you.

As one of our Backend Go Developers:

  • You’ll be writing in Golang on a day-to-day basis.
  • You will help architect, design, and build Geckoboard’s data pipeline.
  • You’ll maintain and optimise our existing infrastructure and services.
  • You will get involved in the prioritising and evaluation of our work.
  • You’ll pair with team members and get involved in code reviews.

Joining us in our London office, you’ll be working alongside a growing team of empowered engineers, with a focus on building a high quality product our customers love, work life balance and personal development.

Keen to hear a bit more? Carlos, one of our Backend Go Developers has shared a little about what it's like working with the team, what an average day looks like and more in an interview on our Blog: https://medium.com/geckoboard-under-the-hood/working-at-geckoboard-as-a-go-developer-e73855bd0dd8

The Geckoboard Story

Thousands of businesses use Geckoboard to build live TV Dashboards that focus teams on what matters. We take the complexity out of connecting data and make it simple for anyone to understand key metrics at a glance. We have pre-built integrations with 60+ tools including Google Analytics, Salesforce, Zendesk, Intercom and Google Sheets and our customers include Marketo, Slack, and Skyscanner.

In our mission to make data useful, our growing team of 40+ is headquartered in London and span across eight time zones - from Mumbai to London, San Francisco to Hawaii and more. We're always looking for people with diverse backgrounds who bring unique perspectives and skills to join our team and in return we constantly strive to ensure that we offer the most encouraging, inclusive, and efficient environment possible.

We don't just pay lip service to work-life balance, we actively and strongly encourage it. Flexible working hours and the ability to regularly work from home lets you work in a way that fits you and your family. We see our contractual obligation to offer 25 days of paid holiday as a minimum for everyone in the organisation, not a limit.

We actively contribute to professional development, courses, conferences, and books. Our Engineering & Product team also run fortnightly "Innovation Wednesdays", where everyone has complete freedom to work on anything that interests them, from contributing to open source, to learning a new skill, or improving our internal tools and processes.

And, don’t take our word for it, see what the team say about the projects they work on: https://medium.com/geckoboard-under-the-hood and their experience of working with us on Glassdoor: https://www.glassdoor.co.uk/Reviews/Geckoboard-Reviews-E878996.htm.
